It has nothing in common with Shogun 2 other than being set in Japan. It's a nip strategy game which in itself is already pretty niche and full of barely-explained mechanics and obtuse terminology. It's more like Crusader Kings than Total War.

Yes, and again it makes no difference really. There's barely any difference between the clans other than some events/alt-history branches, officers and starting locations. Depending on the game there can be some unique flavor to the gameplay, but it's 90% similar.

Anon doing that Saika run here, Playing as the Saika really does a good job at showing how important having a strong home castle is combined with how ridiculous muskets are when they get going.
It also shows how much of frauds the Miyoshi are, they have all that land but the logistics means they can't coordinate offense or defense in a united manner.

I really like the idea of this game and bought it right after reading biographies on Shingen and Masamune, but I couldn't get into it because the AI seemed to not have any idea how to cultivate its land at all. As a result I became the largest power in Japan almost immediately. This was Sphere of Influence in particular, probably not an issue in every iteration of this game and its Three Kingdoms cousins. I've only played SoI and would say I really preferred Chaos Galaxy 1 and 2 over it despite the latter games being much simpler. Anyone know of more difficult iterations or similar games?

Yeah Sphere of Influence has a really big issue with the AI not even remotely building good castles.
I'd say Awakening (the most recent one) is tougher since it has a stronger focus on Officer's and your supplies are much more of an issue to manage so you can't go on one mega conquest spree unless your the Uesugi which is their entire gimmick.
SoI's biggest issue other then the AI not being able to build castles effectively is that overall your castles, gold, and food, are much more important than the officers you actually have access too, so even playing as smaller factions don't feel like an struggle once you know what your doing.
Like one big change from the two games is that you need Level 2 Policy's (which cost around 2000 gold each per turn) to be able to have Horses and Muskets in your armies outside of selected castles, Or officers with Horse and Musket traits, so you can't just hoard money, buy all your supplies and weapons you need for war, and win by throwing resources at the problem.
Sieges are also fairly rough where if the attacker doesn't have 3 to 5 times the amount of troops as the defender, the defender tends to win, so you could win the field battle, but lose the siege battle, and suddenly your weaker for a year than your enemy, and the other clans will capitalize on that if possible.
Ofcourse with that said playing as bigger/stronger clans at their peak will still result in an easier time, but that's a given with how important officers are in Awakening.
