these make fights so hairy they just charge right in and pick on somebody before skedaddling out and hanging out with the ramparts at range, none of them got fluxed out and were only killed by being shot in the ass. Shocking nothing was taken out as I couldn't even look at what they were doing with all the ramparts I had to blow up.

>My only peeve with it is that Lukas's grasp on grammar isn't the best.
I think he got someone to proofread his text at one point, it used to way, way worse to the point I'd rewrite it myself to make my eyes stop bleeding.
I also can't bring myself to use SiC because it lacks the flavor text of vanilla skills.

I've been playing since starfarer_install-0.53a-RC4 and the only mods I've installed were portrait packs because the default portraits are ugly and the artist doesn't understand or wants to portray human beauty.

avoid Bultach and Knights of Ludd, despite the vanilla-ish theming they're as strong as anime mods
avoid most "morally-ambiguous player faction"-type factions, they're all lame and boring with kitbash ships. only HMI does it well.

Due to the supply mechanic are there times when I shouldn't fight? Like if I com across some weak pirates, would it be more profitable to just leave them alone? Even if I only deploy an appropriate amount (don't overkill).

You mean the one faction mod where 1% of the content is knoghts of ludd related (a couple ships, some AI generated anime faces and a couple planets with no content), and the other 99% is anime high sci-fi with weebshit ships piloted by ghost AI demons with names like "yuki onna"? "vanilla-ish"?

I am looking for a relatively fast ship with loads of hardpoints for ballistic guns. There's plenty for energy, but I find barely any that fit my desire to fly around with loads of dakka dakka

Ultimately I think it doesn't matter if its balanced or not, you are an EPIC GAMER, you will probably make a fleet and shipbuild which allows you to roll most encounters.

I wouldn't bother chasing down tiny groups of pirates for shits and gigs, but taking efficient fights is how you get ahead. Anything you're getting paid for is worth fighting, whether that be from faction bounties, personal bounties, or high value drops (i.e. remnant AI cores, threat/dweller weapon drops, etc)

both the variants are good enough; the normal variant brings an accelerated ammo feeder while the pirate version has a burn drive to go even faster than it already does

For long range strike its the regular eradicator (a bit pricey though above the 20 DP) and for brawling/SA its the pirate version but the later is more useful in small skirmishes and falls short in late game content (its actually quite good at robbing convoys and fucking with small patrols/detachments).
