It's been 24 years since call of duty released and people still play it. What difference is it from a new FPS like Highguard? You shoot a gun, run around and kill your enemy. The formula is as simple as it gets but yet I believe a game like Highguard still fail even when they said they'll try to focus on refining PvP this time. I think the hard truth is that people just don't really like the FPS genre, the only reason oldfags will play the old FPS games is because of nostalgia and nothing else.

Holy ESL

Anyway to genuinely answer your bait question it is a matter of
>progressive introduction to a faction throught their campaign, succinct dialogs and cinematics
>an overarching intrigue that quietly build up in the background so that the fanfare of its pivotal moments stand out instead of being just another source of ambient noise
>campaign missions trying to be as non-standard as possible so as to not feel like you're just playing a skirmish game with bells and whistles
>a custom map/mission/campaign "user friendly" editor with an extensive scripting language (WC3 use LUA and JASS) allowing peoples to basically modify anything in the game regardless of skill level in scripting
>a well directed voice acting work to avoid underacting or overacting (a frequent mistakes in VA space)
And probably a few other elements that seem too obvious for me to be worth mentioning

What doesn't help DoW4 is the shadow of GW's greasy hand being the reason for the adeptus mechanicus/necron inclusion as basegame faction alongside the classic blood ravens/orks as well as the game being developed by King Art Games of all studio
Now here's a question to drive a final nail in that coffin: what do you remember of Iron Harvest?

>what do you remember of IH?
All they had to do was copy CoH, replace tanks with mechs and they had an absolute winner on their hands.
But instead they made crew weapons unusable, they somehow gimped the ranges of guns even more, made artillery feel anemic and throw in hero units that don't even feel good or impactful.
The worst of all however were the fucked up optimisation and responsiveness.
I can't remember another game where your units treated your commands as "vague suggestions" quite as much as in IH which made every engagement feel sluggish, out of hand and unsatisfying.
Which is a damn shame because 1920+ is a cool setting and KingArt fucked it all up

Warcraft 3 was replaced with Warcraft III: Reforged. The original has been deprecated, please cease playing it.
