In 1994, sixty-two kids witnessed a large silver saucer land outside their school. Two child-sized extraterrestrials, dressed in black and sporting dark almond-shaped eyes, emerged from the craft and approached the kids, who were terrified but frozen in a trance. The aliens planted telepathic images in the kids' minds, which showed the destruction of the planet due to environmental catastrophe and war. The aliens then released the kids from their trance and left. This is a well-documented event; look up "Ariel School incident" if you haven't read about it.
Now, I've been following the kids' social media for a while, and it appears that most of them were completely fucked up by this event. They obsess over this encounter and seem unable to hold down steady jobs. Some appear to have extreme mental-health issues and struggle with paranoia and suicidal ideation. Emily Trim, who died two years ago, spent the last decade of her life paralyzed by trauma. Lisil Field says "wounds" from the incident keep reopening in her daily life. Kudzanai Munya talks about feelings of persistent terror and an inability to talk to people about the event without being seen as nuts.
My question is this. Why are these extraterrestrials so callous that they would ruin the lives of dozens of kids? Are they simply incapable of understanding human nature at a deep level? Do they just not care? What are they actually trying to achieve here?

I wonder if the aliens did anything else. Childhood me would've been glad to see aliens. What exactly were the "images"? You would think the adults would be more specific now that they have adult knowledge of the world
