Been practicing my manuals for about a month now pretty much daily, now when I actually get out to properly skate my feet are cramping up constantly whenever I go for a manual/tictac/pivot, how can I avoid this fate? Take a break the day before I go out? I'd rather not lose my streak of practice

yeah you absolutely should take breaks, especially if you have pains that are not going away from one day to another
also if you're getting cramps it means you're not drinking enough water

When did you guys learn noseslides? I have:
- high ollies going fast and over tall things
- FS 5050s fast and high, learning BS5050s,
- clean proper kickflips
- Clean proper pop shuvs, front shoves
- Long boardslides that I pop into instead of just kinda shimmying on the rail. Not sure why I haven't learned lips yet but I def could.
- people compliment my pop and speed
- basically I skate fast with lots of flow and proper tricks, but I only do very basics (but proper).
- Proper BS and FS 180s. Non of that revert or lazy shit, I'm talking popped.
Yet noseslides still scare the shit out of me. I kept slipping out last year and stayed away. Yet I see fat 50 year old men on reddit doing them....
When did you guys learn them?
>>
>>248297
I think I had frontside noseslides before I had consistent kickflips, when I was 14 or something. I started skating with my neighbor in our suburban cul-de-sac, all we had was the super rough sidewalk and a ledge that was made of agglomerated gravel to do stalls on, I learned nosepicks before even trying fs 50s. I learned backside noseslides at 30 even though they're much easier. Maybe you could try rolling up perpendicular to a curb/ledge and ollieing into a nose stall, to get a feel for the right balance (stomp that shit, put all your weight on that one foot). And then starting stationary parallel to the ledge and ollieing 90 degrees into the stall (holy shit that might work for tailslides why didn't I ever think of it before I'll have to try it next session). Slappys could be a way to get into noseslides but I think it's harder and it's a different skill. Skating is 80% mental 20% physical, don't forget it
>>
>>
>>248297
I always naturally felt comfortable doing bs noseslides, so they were one of the first ledge tricks I learned. I've done them on so much shit over the years. They are my most comfortable trick, easily. Its very often the first trick I do upon getting to my local. I do them so much that I have to be conscious of how worn down my baseplate is getting,

Surely nose picks helps nose grinds not nose slides. It's exactly how I learnt nose grinds.. Started 90° at snail pace, slowly moved to parallel, then next few sessions I slowly added speed and grinded further til I could pop out.

Yeah nosepicks don't have anything to do with noseslides, it was just to give an example of how a limited environment pushes one to learn different things (we were of course also trying old-school freestyle shit like pogos and caspers because that's what you do on rough ground). Nosegrinds are piss easy though, literally just do a nose manual but on the edge kind of? That's what they feel like to me

because it's all about repetition and patterns rather than style. Remember that several of the top freestyle pros of the 80s (most notably Rodney Mullen, Steve Rocco, and Per Welinder) were aspie nerds. And now that it's basically an extreme niche branch of the sport? forget about it. Like asking why there are so many autists in the Live Steam community.

Thank you for this answer. Very informative. Freestyle skating looks really cool. I’ve been thinking of getting into it since i moved somewhere that gets pretty wet and cold during the winters since i can just do it in a garage. 10 inch is a bit too 80s (I do have a circa-1988 setup with a SC Jason Jessee Neptune deck). I think by around 1991 boards had moved to around 9, 9.5, and by 93 they were consistently getting below 9. so, peak BPSM era would've been somewhere around 9.

I helped the owner rebuild the shop park at least twice for free only for him to sell stuff to walk ins that he had already taken off the shelf and agreed to hold for me until I got out of work, so I'd drive down there only for him to tell me he sold it earlier that day.
He did it twice in a row so I stopped buying anything from him and only skated the park once or twice more before I stopped going there completely.

family members will outright shame and insult you if you don't bend over backwards for them, even whilst giving you nothing in return. pull the old "you ingrate, you OWE us [blank]" card, like kindness is a system of debt that you have to make payments on. fuck that. That is how Nike killed my frens shop too. Gave him a ridiculous contract he couldn't afford so they cut him off. Pretty certain that was their tactic, kill skate shops. Its why I hit kids in the head with my trucks if I see them in nikes.
>>
>>
>>249308
It was the opposite, actually. His business exploded once he started selling Nikes and he made the mistake of neglecting other stuff to focus on giving Nike as much shelf space as possible, so when they opted to not renew his contract, his revenue dropped off a cliff and he was both scrambling to try and pull in other shoes to fill the void and dealing with more and more regular customers realizing they could just get their boards from the same sites they were now getting their Dunks from.

Vans is deliberately trying to ruin people's feet, convince me otherwise.
How about DC?
>>
>>
>>249325
Vans is quite literally owned by Vanity Fair and I would argue that their concentrated push towards "lifestyle" shoes puts them further outside the realm of "core" shoe companies than Nike.
And like that other anon said, I wore Vans for a long time since they pass the ESD metrics I need for my job purely by chance, but after a year of sticking icepacks on my feet every evening and convincing myself I'm just old, I swapped to a different shoe brand and started using these ugly and chunky ESD straps and suddenly I don't feel like both of my feet belong in casts come 5pm.

Nike sb was exclusive to skate shops at the start. They then put limits on how small orders could be, hence why his shop became more and more nike shit. He was forced buy x amount, and if thats his most selling product then of course he will. Then they rugpulled the skate shops and undercut their prices. Skate shops either cut their contracts or ordered way too much shit that they couldn't sell anyway because nike was no longer exclusive to their shops. In retrospect you'd be foolish to not see this was their plan all along to get their slimey paws deep into skateboarding after previous failed attempts. This time ensuring no one else survived.

Bodecker was a real skateboarding fan and Nike was largely content to let him do whatever he wanted because his plan was to just modify existing shoe designs from the 80s, making the department as close to free money as you could get.
The problem came when the Janoskis were released. That shoe was a victim of its own success and dragged the rest of the line down to hell with it thanks to beancounters who saw the numbers it was doing.

Zoomer here. Were skaters in the 80s in better shape compared to today? I get that the tricks are better today but I’ve been watching old skate videos and a lot of these guys look to be in really good shape. As in muscle shirts with actual muscles and doing high hippie jumps etc. Basically a lot of tricks that involves their physical athleticism before using the board first. Compared to todays skaters that are usually of an average build, skinny, or skinny fat at least in the US

He quit because people he thought were his friends for over a decade turned on him instantly when a dumb internet mob convinced themselves that posting a video of a naked homeless guy getting into a fight with a food truck operator and saying it was fucked meant he had somehow instigated the whole thing. His whole list of sponsors was under the Girl umbrella, and they dropped him the very next day without so much as a text. He found out from a social media post.
Dude got stabbed in the back by Mike Carroll and the rest of the team just kind of shrugged and deleted his number. I'd quit skating too.

What the fuck is this shit? muscle memory is weird. it's as if my body remembers how to do everything but my sense of balance is completely gone. anyone ever start back skating after years away? how long does it take to get the balance back? I hope it comes quick, I'm paranoid that it will take years to build the cat like reflexes back up and that's depressing. ollies up curbs are sketchy as fuck yet I can full cab off of one. also, I know NOTHING about skate culture after like 2015. is the shake junt dude weed era over? what are the trends now?
>>
>>
>>249516
Park/vert skaters are still in top notch shape, have you ever tried to pop an eggplant? The trend is being a sleazy slob though, you don't really need to be athletic to grind big rails.
>>249597
these days being core is about fashion and energy drinks, but 70% of the new skaters are just troon-adjacent nerds who practice disgusting flatground tricks in (You)r way at the park. Kids will suck each other off over fucking dolphin flips while unable to do simple kickturns on a quarter
>>
>>
>>249516
people in general used to be in way better shape. seeing some ham planet waddling down the street used to be a rare event, rather than being 40% of the population. Men had twice the T levels on average back then, which leads to a higher 'resting' fitness level. Doing like 20 sit-ups a day would get you washboard abs back then, now you need an intense and dedicated weight training regimen just to cut through a potbelly. shit's fucked
>>

It's okay to have never skated vert, but street skating barely involves cardio compared to transition skating, and the speeds and heights in street are rarely near anything like vert. Your worst slam is probably scraping your knee on a 6-set lol
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>249654
This is cap. Fatties don't have the reflexes or grace to get good at ledges or street. Transition takes way less explosive power because you are being carried around by the ramps. Virtually no development of the muscles that give you good pop. There is a reason people that start skating late in life go all in on transition. Its easier to get good at. Same reason a lot of women skate tranny
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>249605
never said I couldn't ollie. I said the board does not suck to my feet very well on an ollie, it's floaty. backside 180s and fullcabs are easier for whatever reason. I thought it was the shoes at first, so I bought some new ones(semi-fat emericas) and it didn't help. I essentially feel like I'm drunk skating at all times.
>>
>>
>>249661
you are very amusing
street : for the "chill" kids (read: slow), allows you to smoke and drink all you want without any effect on your performance, filters women because owie muh shinners and sprained ankles
transition: physically straining, fast, demanding, filters people who are afraid of being seen with a helmet
at the plaza: sausage fest, hanging out for ages with a smoke in my hand, never have to pop above knee height
at the skatepark: occasional womanses (who usually learn flip tricks before learning to drop in), can't skate for more than an hour because even snowboarding is less hard on the legs than carving the deep end

speaking of 8.5 inch
boards
I went skating today with a board that wide, the same size Indies and 58mm wheels. I landed the best fakie flip I ever have done in my entire life. I'm not a very big person so I thought it was better to skate skinny boards but I'm finding the opposite. The big board flips all slow and it was almost like I had time to sort my feet out in the air unlike a tiny board that immediately flips over. I should have tried this out ages ago. I hope I haven't been using the wrong gear this entire time.

I got given the generic '8.0 or 8.25 for beginners' advice when i first started and switched between the 2 sizes for about 3 years, but I really wanna just own one of each size and try them all. I already have an excess of 8 and 8.25's that I still haven't used yet, so buying another deck plus right size trucks is not the right move financially, but fuck me it's tempting.

I was this guy for the first 1-2 years of skating. Decent flatground, can ride fast, but got stuck trying to learn 5050s or things on hips.
Had to go back and ACTUALLY learn how to ollie. I could ollie but like, learning a GOOD ollie that's tight and fast. That's a whole different ballgame.
Learning that changed the game, pretty soon I was good enough to get proper clips. Gotta actually get good at ollies if you want to get good at skating *for real*

I wish. I've been trying to get a pair of the Krampus Dunks since they launched, but size 11.5 sold out in under 15 seconds and the restocks are gone in under 5.
I even paid for a
CCS+ subscription
like a fucking retard but never even got alerted to the fact that they were stocking it until I stumbled upon it on their site all sold out. I rationalize my purchase by telling myself that it's worth it just for the cost savings on shipping.

>Had to go back and ACTUALLY learn how to ollie. I could ollie but like, learning a GOOD ollie that's tight and fast. That's a whole different ballgame.

It's not even about being into them, I just saw a shoe I liked and tried to buy it. Nike has decided that they'd rather sell their skateboarding shoes to people who are going to put them in display cases instead, so there's nothing I can do about that other than lament the fact that I'll have to compete with bots if I ever want to purchase a pair.
As a complete aside, Brooklyn Projects just tried to scam me out of $40 by never fulfilling my order and then trying to gaslight me into believing my order was cancelled a week ago despite the charge still posting. I get the feeling my bank's going to need to rape the money out of them.

Mitchie is a weird cunt, though. He does have some great ways of explaining things, but he is an awkward fucker trying his best to appear confident to grow his 'business model' and it's painful to watch most of the time. I turned that vid off as soon as he transparently overreacted to the 2nd comment he read, laughing way too hard and staring directly at the camera with his mouth open like a fucking psychopath. I genuinely don't know why anyone over 15 years old would watch this guys content outside of his tutorials.

As I get later into my sesh I tend to get nose to tail wobble when squatting down for an ollie attempt, it's getting to be a real pain in the ass. Think I'm either over squatting or overworking my hams such that they're getting too weak, need to strengthen them up first, not sure...
