That's not the exact quote. He said they started out with enough material for a TV cour, then worked down from there. The final product definitely wouldn't run that long even if you slowed it down a bit and included details from the LN. The manga artists shortened the handshake scene (handshakes are hard to do in comics media desu, you either dedicate a whole page to it, a bunch of small pannels or one wide panel which is what she did) and people got mad because twitter freaks see that handshake as a metaphor for scisoring, THEN the artists seemed to favor Mikado and added a lot of flair to him, she seems to like him a lot. Good, the fact that the movie takes a while to touch into the yuri is good and works in favor of it. The audience slowly realizes Iroha loves Kaguya as the character does as well with short sprinkles of intimacy between them here and there until she decides to pursue her love for the final act.
