What's your biggest criticism of the series?
For me it's that there only seems to be like five different character archetypes Tappei knows how to write and that most characters are just a jumbling of those five. He's also way too obsessed with annoying unique speech quirks, maybe in an attempt to escape this. And literally nobody in the series outside a handful of people (pre-amnesia Crusch, Ana, Wilhelm, a few others) can pull off being professional and serious characters. Everybody else has their gigantic out there autistic anime quirks and behaviour that makes you question how they even manage to tie their shoe laces let alone be serious fighters or politicians and the like.
And I think the worldbuilding can sometimes feel kinda empty. Like, huge parts of the world don't feel lived in or feel like they have an actual history and life to them, instead seeming more like cardboard cutouts or props for a play. He also scarcely mentions wildlife or much animal life at all outside of Otto using bugs or birds to send messages or something

They have similarities because of parallelism. Repetition and cycles are obviously things in the series. Rem, Subaru, Betty, and Garfiel all need to be pulled out by someone else. First Rem semi-accidentally by Subaru, then she passes it forward to Subaru himself, then he passes that forward to both Garfiel and Betty and its come up at other times since. That sort of thing.
Dialogue quirks are because the speakers are unmarked in the WN, if they didn't talk weird it would often be indecipherable who is speaking. So many people have unique or semi-unique forms of address for Subaru you can tell who is speaking just from someone saying his name.

Tappei doesn't like characters taking over or being consecutively the solution to problems, so Betty being powerful and theoretically ever present means he has to work around it by separating them or weakening her or whatnot. She's still useful and has some moment or another in most arcs, but she's not around as much as you might think and also doesn't do as much as she possibly could. But this lets other characters do things, which is fine.
I think how she's handled is mostly okay given the juggling of interests Tappei wants to do and the things Betty does are at least consequential unlike the worst offender which is Emilia. Emilia is the "main girl" and present and active in every arc yet usually she's assigned inconsequential busywork to justify her existence and half the time she can't even accomplish the stated goal but it doesn't matter either way because it was bullshit to begin with.

Yeah... You get used to it... Even actual books, like Harmony, by Itoh, can't fully get rid of the "japanese language quirks" in their translations. Things like, "overuse of specific words", or "starting sentances with verbs", or "awkward word choice", or "not explaining what people look like, or place descriptions", or "not specifying who's talking". All of this is normal in the original Japanese text, but in order to make a good book in english you have to basically throw out all of the original japanese and redo everything to make it sound good in english. It's annoying that more translators don't do this, but I understand why since they have to balance between accuracy, faithfulness, and readability.

Additionally, you can't just be a good japanese reader to make a good english translation. You also need to be a good writer in english. I don't think a lot of translation companies think as hard about that as they should when hiring translators for novels. Instead of hiring a novelist that can read japanese, they just get someone who can read japanese.

It's a bit frustrating. I feel like I get worse at writing if I read too many LNs.

I've read way worse than ReZero's translation. It's not amazing, but it's not unreadable.

It doesn't help that we all compare the books to the show though. The only things translated are dialogue and signage in the anime; easy to translate without all the hangups of translating a book. Then we compare the grammatical flaws of the book translation to the much-more-flawless anime and get upset that the prose isn't as good as what we expected.
