That's preposterous. We don't like in the 2000s or the 90s anymore.
It's Japan that needs China, not the other way around.
For a shithole country like mine, we can live without China. Our economy isn't big enough and dependent on China enough.
But for Japan, they are too entangled with both America and China.. it's too late for them. Their only hope is to "de-tangle" from China by moving their sources of production and income.

I tried watching it and remember it looking like an american military propaganda AD.
It sounds funny in theory to use overwhelming military force against medieval armies, but then it becomes just a cruel, it doesn't make sense that most of them wouldn't surrender given the overwhelming power they face.
Do they take prisoners in general? Surely most of them would surrender. What about diplomacy?
>>
>>286376194
>Do they take prisoners in general? Surely most of them would surrender. What about diplomacy?
Thats the point of the story?
Once they dig in, they send out scouting teams to learn about land and people and engage in diplomacy.
The intial battles were first about Empire not realizing they are attacking powerful army. Second about doing the same to their vasals, so they cannot attack Empire back. And later the Prince starts guerrila war.

The thing that pisses me off about GATE is for all its serious business military shit, it keeps pushing the agenda that women are superior warriors to men. Seriously. All the male soldiers are armchair weaklings in indirect or support roles, they never fucking fight anything. Of course it's the fucking woman that's the most lethal soldier ever, and on the fantasy side of course it's another fucking woman that solos entire armies. It's retarded.

I hope that this time it will be smarter, because in GATE I was very irritated by the behavior of the army, which, after entering unknown territory, organized a “military picnic” instead of a base.
The first instinct should be to spread out and dig in, then bring in detection equipment, reconnaissance aircraft, and build field fortifications over a large area around the hill.
Meanwhile, they didn't even have stupid thermal imaging and had to fire flares.
And let's remember that the MC was an otaku, so he should have known that all it takes is one Megumin-type wizard in the enemy army and everyone gets killed.
inb4 that would be boring; just the opposite, in addition to technical means, the MC would still have to go with the team to investigate what they were dealing with in general, what the potential threats were, etc.

Very fucking good.
They should have reconciled with ROC, ROK, the Philippines, and whoever else they invaded, because it is very possible that they will soon have to fight side by side. They should form an alliance with political guarantees and, importantly, with the integration of military systems.

I'm sorry, but who was attacking and who was defending?
If the Japanese hadn't secured the gate, they would have attacked the city again. What were they supposed to do? Surrender, invite them in, and preferably hand over power in Japan because shooting was not allowed?
Go be a pacifist where it makes sense.
>>
>>286381638
>The first instinct should be to spread out and dig in, then bring in detection equipment, reconnaissance aircraft, and build field fortifications over a large area around the hill.
But they did all that. They dig in first thing they get through gate. And a few days later, when Itami is returning, they have whole fortress built.
>Meanwhile, they didn't even have stupid thermal imaging and had to fire flares.

the scary part of america's military is the almost schizo-level readiness they have, and also the speed of moving their toys around
when i watch GATE or any armywank media they either don't really understand warfare or it focuses on the flashy, cool shit so people who watch are kept in the dark about what really makes militaries strong
but it's whatever, you know. i'm watching this for the waifus and the tanks and ships in s2. it's laughably unserious and that's why we're here

Japan may not be a superpower, but they would be able to defend themselves. For example, it is widely known that they have nuclear power plants, advanced long-range missiles, and if they were forced to, they would immediately build a nuclear arsenal (which they should do IRL).
I'm sick of you "pacifist" hippies. For over 100 years, you've only squealed when someone defended themselves against the commies or even prepared for their attack, but when your comrades invade other countries and slaughter people left and right, everything is fine.

>>
>>286382267
But that's not how modern defense works. Dispersal does not consist solely of occupying and fortifying a hill, which is also necessary, but in addition, the army should be deployed throughout the entire area within a radius of at least 10 km, and in reality much more.
Concentrating a large number of troops in a small area, even if it is well fortified, is an easy target for demolition bombs or their magical equivalent.
Why do you think the Americans have over 100 bases in Japan? Not to occupy and harass them, but to avoid being an easy target for the enemy.

The fact is that a whole bunch of German war criminals never even lost their positions, and yet no one is lashing out at the Bundeswehr. In the space of 20 years, Germany started two world wars, and that's just the icing on the cake of their history of aggression.
Germany has not paid Poland a penny in reparations, and even now, together with Brussels, which still has a statue of King Leopold II in front of the European Parliament, they lecture Poland, considering themselves superior.

None would allow Japan (war crimes enthusiast) to do a full-scale invasion of a primitive society. There would be an international task force to rescue hostages, but a new world, races, and cultures would be the discovery of the century. It would be mostly researchers and military personnel from the US doing a quarantine of who can enter; the risk of a pathogen alone would stall any major operation. That, without taking into account the political play for new potential resources, and the study of the nature of magic.
>>
>>286385277
>the risk of a pathogen alone would stall any major operation
Exactly, that's one of the most serious problems. There was some mention of quarantine, but in my opinion it was far too weak. There should be isolation, volunteers must be aware that they will not be able to return until they have been tested or they bring back some kind of disease. Anyway, it should also work the other way around so that they don't bring any diseases back from us to them.
And, of course, the identification of potentially dangerous pathogens and the production of vaccines.
As for Japan's alleged bloodthirstiness, on that basis, most large countries would have to be considered criminals. But Japan has at least come to terms with this, unlike, for example, the British, who not only committed heinous crimes in their colonies, but also stabbed their ally in the back by handing Poland over to the enemy at Yalta. And a traitor is worse than an enemy.

Realistically Pina and Bozes would have to get shots and be in quarantine for two weeks each going into Japan and coming back from japan to prevent them from bringing the special region black plague to Japan.
The only time the anime even mentions disease is when Mari mentions the STDs the hooker characters carry here.

Unless there are fantasy submarines or fantasy sonar, this is pointless even in a show about soldiers gunning down knights. A modern frigate, sure, but a submarine is just pointless.

What Japan did in WW2 is the stuff of nightmares. But it doesn't matter if others are hypocrites for doing the same; the problem is that they did it close to the age of information to be clearly documented. Now is something they have to deal with to this day in their politics and international relations. If something like Gate happened, they would be more than restricted, with the world scrutinizing every move they make.
With just a leaked video of a JDF soldier mauling hundreds of soldiers with just wooden spears or the info of them taking wives for themselves, and it would make Japan's economy be boycotted to oblivion, and China making at least 10 movies about the rape of Nanking.

It's a step above your average LNs but still genre fiction at the end of the day. "Fantasy" is probably a bit of a stretch compared to Japanese stuff, more very alt history dating back to lizards evolving sapience instead of people.
I enjoyed it at the start, having to build up a war machine from scratch by industrializing the natives. But it kind of loses the plot as it introduces more and more higher tech villains that the fantasy aspect is largely lost.

It's just a job. Some guys dig a big hole, others wrap the dead in cloth and carry them like a sack of potatoes to the hole. You can even think you're doing good work, nobody wants to leave the dead out in the sun to rot.
I would definitely prefer to clean up a battlefield once or twice than shovel shit every day.

JSDF doesn’t even have ICBMs in the first place, anon. They run diesel-electric boats and play by the “purely defensive” script. The most they’re launching is a stern look and maybe a torpedo if things get spicy.
Besides, nuking fantasy Rome from orbit would end the isekai powertrip in like 5 minutes. Can’t flex modern military superiority for 12 episodes if you glass the map in episode 2. Overkill doesn’t sell merch.

>but do you think they could really use them effectively in a war scenario
It depends on many factors, such as how well they are integrated with other systems, how modern they are, and how well trained the pilots and crew are. Nowadays, “network-centric warfare” is used, where air, ground, and surface units exchange information with each other. For example, AWACS detects an enemy aircraft from a very long distance, the commander at the base has a direct overview of the situation, and sends a stealth fighter with its own radar turned off, which fires a missile “out of nowhere.”
The enemy can only be aware that the enemy AWACS is flying on the edge of the radar horizon and realizes that he has a problem only when it is too late, because a missile fired from a relatively close distance is flying towards him.

>fantasy world.
More like "ancient world".
I remember every fantasy element being nerfed down or directly being unexistant for the convenience of the defense force.
And the very few actual fantasy elements joined the japanese.
There were ogres and wyverns, but were only big guys and lizards that could be killed with guns.
No curses, no ghosts, no mind control magic, not even demons.
Except that one lolita demigod that joins the japanese, or the only actual useful wizard that joins the japanese, or the elf that gets roflstomped by a dragon but then can put to sleep entire garrisons after joining the japanese
I even remember how the monstergirls were nothing but literal whores while they were on the empire side, they befriend the japanese and suddenly their ears are radars able to spot elite units without equipment

First of all Satan. I agree that GATE should have been a true fantasy world clash so that the JSDF actually had to struggle and work around magic and unfamiliar elements. However
>hey befriend the japanese and suddenly their ears are radars able to spot elite units without equipment
I'm going to defend this point within the context of the story. Beast folk have always had superior senses and stuff, and a lot of notable slaves were former warriors already, simply from defeated tribes. So them being able to sense shit at range is fine. It's still convenient but not on the level of bad writing that the other points you brought up in your last point were.

I know that in Nagasaki, the bomb fell directly on the Catholic district.
The problem is that the Japanese had a military industry that was largely scattered across small workshops in cities, and they were preparing to defend the islands. The Americans would have had to land on the home islands, which would have meant huge losses on both sides.
I do not completely justify the destruction of cities with atomic and incendiary bombs, but ultimately it may have been the lesser evil, especially from the perspective of US soldiers.

In my opinion, Hirohito was the one who failed the most, as he could have prevented the war, or at least stopped it when it became clear that the US would not back down.
Of course, it was a military dictatorship, but the emperor still had authority and could have gathered commanders loyal to him and staged a “coup d'état,” or rather, dealt with the rebels.
>>
>>286434854
>Hirohito was the one who failed the most
Every military commander after the war covered for him. Every one. Not because he was innocent, but because if any blame came down on the emperor, it would endanger the monarchy.
>>
>>286434932
Covering up is one thing, but that doesn't change the fact that, at best, he was passive in a situation that required decisive action. That's called silent consent.
He did not prevent the war crimes committed by the Japanese army, nor did he prevent the massacre of his own people by strategic bombing by the US.

I'm anime only, but from what I saw, it didn't seem so unrealistic. They only sent their recon forces out. By the time they get back after a couple days, the main force is doing heavy construction. About a week later, they have a fully modern base built inside a medieval-style star fortress. I'd say that's decently realistic. Besides, you need a runway before you can send out aircraft.

I'm so sick of dumb redditors saying this. Firstly, no military power is even capable of interfering with Japan's trade, let alone landing an army on Japan's shores, except the US. Secondly, the political fallout of messing with Japan over gate resources would be astronomical. The ginza incident is literally Japan's October 7th, except instead of 80 years of mutual animosity, it's an unprovoked attack by a complete stranger. Nobody is doing anything to Japan over it, and anyone who tries it is just giving the US an excuse to give them the Iran treatment.
