He originally didn't think he would have needed Ryougi(or maybe he always did, Araya was going after Ryougi even back during Murder Speculation), his infinite suffering farm was about the repeating cycle of death creating some deviation eventually outside of his design that WOULD have allowed him to, by studying and understanding that variance, open a path to the root.
