The guy in charge of character design was a newbie who still wasn't confident enough to experiment so he tried to stay true to the manga design.

If you are talking about the character designs then they look pretty close to C-Station. It's made by a different studio so ofcourse there will be some changes.
If you mean the overall atmosphere then it will never be the same because the novelty wore off and camping/sightseeing isn't really a deep subject for it to stay entertaining for long. However, teaser for season 4 looks the closest we have been to season 1 so I am staying hopeful for this.
