She really is a great character. All the key ingredients are there - a strong supporting cast to bounce her off of constantly, an interesting world for her to explore, and that careful balance of being exotic yet grounded. Multiple mundane flaws and casual banter with her friends are a huge part of the appeal. Great VAs in both languages is another big factor. Gets pretty much everything right. If they did a reboot with half the budget Frieren has, it would be huge.

They literally just need to reboot to the first season. We all love it, but it is dated and rough even for its time. Smooth out the delivery of jokes and pacing in general so that they don't come across as cringey. Don't skip out on the worldbuilding; make it clear from the start that much of Lina's world is outside of a barrier, and that in her magic system there exists gods, demons, and entire worlds we know nothing about. People love to speculate and theorycraft. Make dragon slave and giga slave as hype as possible; people also love the chants and they are sharable.

And not to white knight or simp, but girls genuinely do want a female protag that is at least somewhat relatable and not overtly sexual because they like to self-insert. Lina fits the bill, and done properly would be a great "show this to your girlfriend" anime. We have way more than enough sexy isekai girls and fanservice; it's created a gap/opportunity.

I don't think it's going to work, most modern adaptations of older stuff suffer from very fast pacing, which it feels like they're skipping content to fulfill whatever contemporary episode quota (which is ironic since a lot of older series felt quite the contrary). Also they may change the tone, but I don't think they'll prioritize drama over comedy.

On one hand, I wouldn't mind a good director and studio taking a crack at a remake of the first season, you are right that it's pretty rough, even by the standards of 1995. Though I still say NEXT is still a masterpiece. And TRY had good bits, it's a bit inconsistent. Revo/Evo-R scratched that Slayers itch at the time but Pokota really ruined the tone.

But still, I'm sadly in agreement with the other two anons. Not that they make bad points, but because they're absolutely right that modern anime just doesn't take its time and feels the need to rush things constantly and far too much fantasy slop gets tied to video games and stat screen bullshit, even when it's not an isekai.
It's not like it CAN'T be done. Frieren is proof enough that non-isekai, non-stat screen fantasy that has a slow, deliberate pacing CAN be made. But alas that it's the exception and not the rule.

And I think the Dragon Slave is perfect as it was. The classic animation techniques made it great. And, yes, the chant was part of the hype. I even liked the rhyming chant they did in the dub.

I don't want to turn it into one of *those* threads, but the problem is that it's just not a good business model.
Women simply do not buy otaku weeb shows unless they become breakout hits, and this isn't me trying to make it about redpill nonsense or whatever: If you look at sales, 90% of DVD sales and high-end otaku/anime merch go to men. And sure, those men have girlfriends, and Lina is not an Isekai sex doll She's not exactly kosher with the majority of the western audience who would want to show this to their friends: She's a 14 year old girl with modest breasts who complains about not being giga-D cup almost every episode because she grew up with Naga the S-cup, and she is constantly getting naked, being peeped on, making sexual jokes, and we don't live in the 90's anymore where normalfaggots would be okay with that or laugh it off as a joke. Much of the humor about that would have to change, especially with Amelia who even younger than she is.

I think that's part of the reason they don't want to adapt more of the LNs or finish adapting the Manga: Much of it like Lina getting mind raped wouldn't fly with the modern anime audience.

As you said, there's not much to gain by pandering to women, but pandering is the key word. None of us want to see "Concorde the anime", but I also wouldn't completely dismiss women as an audience, especially not on the basis of DVD(?) sales. You can look to something like Inuyasha, which had great appeal to both men and women, despite having gore and even nudity. It worked there because the nudity was always in the more modest context of beauty, rather than coomer bait. It was still fanservice, but it was fanservice with dignity, and I think that's the blueprint for a Slayers reboot. Only instead of dignity, it's comedy. But never comedy as an excuse for coomer pandering. The litmus test is: "would a relatively normal anime watcher be embarrassed if he/she watched with friends/family". You don't just get more female viewers, you get more male viewers too.

Notably Popful mail just got a fan-dub recently. I doubt /a/ gives a single fuck about fan-dubs but I might as well mention it. Anything would be better than the working designs interpretation of Popful mail probably if there is no other way to play (I am assuming someone's done a proper fan translation which should obviate the need for a dub, working designs or otherwise, already but don't quote me on that).

Popful Mail deserves a good undub, but that requires knowing how to add subs to the FMV which is not straightforward, and some rewriting to avoid dubtitles. There's already an Unworking Designs patch to fix balance issues.
