I finished the manga that Mizusawa Megumi did right before Hime-chan no Ribbon named Chime. Was pretty good. Also have about 50 chapters left of Hell Teacher Nube.

the manga is seriously pretty. it's an interesting one for me. I knew nothing about it but picked it up randomly while in a book store based on the cover and got hooked immediately

I'll samefag and say last news ('92) is also a good one to pick up. the hostel i was staying at had a whole old manga collection. I begged them to let me keep it because for some reason this series is hard to find in print mandarake or book off didn't have vol 1.

I also recently did a reread of Family compo and city hunter. I want to start on cobra or finish galaxy 999.I have a few cobra volumes but i couldn't get in to it. I ended up being really disappointed with the ending even though i had an inkling it would end that way.

I finished the You're Under Arrest OVA it was good. I didn't care for the romance plot in episode 3 much. I did think episodes 1,2,and 4 were great, especially episode 2 with the rain driver. Is the main tv series any good from 1996?
>>
>>286445362
Season 1, the continuation of the OVA, is good. The animation is not as good as the OVA of course.
Season 2 is boring. I don't know how they did it, but most episodes are a chore to watch. I tapped out after that.

Only a few episodes in, but I find the motivations and actions of the characters more erratic and irrational, and the villains don't feel like they have the same humanity that made the battles with the Zeon more interesting.

Alright thanks I'll check it out. Dirty Pair, City Hunter, Kimagure Orange road, and You're Under Arrest are going to be on my retro list for a bit.

It is jarring. I think that's the fun in zeta though, for me. I started off the show shitposting to my friend "what the fuck is this, why is everyone punching each other? is this ryona bait?" but slowly the characters became endearing and it's my favorite series out of the show.

Tomino is not a good director. Don't think about it too much.
He and his whole team just wants to sell you toys and plastic models. He kind of reminds me of that advice from the makers of South Park. He's doing the "and then" story telling.

I guess you foiled my plans this time, anon.
But I'll try again next time on a different thread; if no one asks in this thread.

Lately? Memories, Metal Skin Panic, Visions of Escaflowne & Angel Cop. Honorary mention to Puppet Princess which is probably on the kinfe's edge of being "retro" now.
Next up I need a break from battle anime. Orange Road or Aim for the Ace next, maybe both.

Finished VOTOMS a few days ago. Overall I liked the series, but it certainly is not without its flaws; I liked Chirico and Fyana, but I'm more mixed on the supporting cast. I had no problems with them per se, but they're rather static except Vanilla during Kunmen. Coccona also got a bit annoying at times but I liked Gotho and Vanilla overall. The animation is obviously low budget but the action scenes are great, there's a good bunch of cool kills in it. Lastly, it felt rather unfocused at times, like they were making it up as they went (like most anime, honestly) and the arcs feel disconnected from each other at times. I liked that it makes the overall series more diverse, though. As for my thoughts on each arc (spoilered out of courtesy):Udo - not a big fan of this one. It drags on for far too long and made me take a break from the series. It starts alright, but after a while there's a good amount of repetitive police chases while Chirico tracks down Fyana. Did not like the tone at times, and this was when the supporting cast felt the most annoying.Kunmen - my favourite one. Great arc overall and it's what hooked me on the show. Good action, supporting cast, villains... If I had to point out a flaw... I guess it might be a bit generic, but nothing wrong with that.Sunsa - I liked the ghost ship part a lot, but I'm not that big on the middle part between that and Ypsilon's return. I don't like the bulldyke that chases Chirico around, because she's ugly as fuck and wastes screentime, really. We already got an idea of how bad the Red Shoulders were on the ship, and a bit of it in Udo. Rochina is great here too, and in the following arc.Quaint - I didn't care much for the start of it, but it picks up when Chirico starts exploring the old Quaintian facility. Wiseman's base and the following climax were good too, although the twist of Chirico rejecting Wiseman was easy to see coming.

for all its problems I kinda like HnK

I’ll add:Rochina was a better villain than Killy and the two scientists. I didn’t care too much for them, they were cartoon villains through and through. Rochina is more interesting with his obsession with Chirico, same with Ypsilon.
Overall a decent, if disjointed show. I plan to watch Mellowlink too and give the other OVAs a try, although I’ve heard mixed opinions about them. No idea about other Takahashi shows. I’ve heard Dougram is really about the political narrative with the action being pretty much filler they get out of the way quickly each episode. I suppose it’s more cohesive than VOTOMS, too? I know Gasaraki gets called an Eva clone and that Layzner got cut abruptly by Sunrise (as usual) and needed a posterior revision, but not much else.

Gasaraki is a slow burn, but very charming imo, I haven't really felt much of Eva in it aside from the very last episode.
Layzner got a solid simple first part and then a very shaky second one. The OVA patches a few spots but it's still the same rushed ending. I'd say Layzner's main attraction is in mecha designs and some fun bits of animation here and there

Galient is pretty solid and charming, one of my favs from him. Gasaraki is very dry compared to Eva and the Noh theme gets overshadowed. Overall I think Dougram is the most interesting one.
