Most LNs do not have readily available raws even now, no idea in 2016, but someone who could read Japanese but did not want to bother with reading the source, which is extremely common, since if you are invested enough to try to learn a language for media you probably consume a lot of media and migrating to a full raw experience is extremele unviable and annoying, was bothered by 7753's dialog in Limited, did check, and things escalated from there.

Then where do the "translators" get them from? Even in 2016 you had globally available ebook stores. When you try to learn a language by reading bilingually you'll quickly realize how much bullshit gets passed as translations, especially in areas with hobbyist and low quality professional translators, and give up on the approach. It's pointless to call out every fake translation because of how prevalent they are and how little most of the readers care about that. When you actually do translations, you'll often wing it so you can achieve faster output.

And yes, that is a problem, but you are vastly exaggerating the damage. If the typesetting is relatively good, the worst you will generally find at best are nuances, tenses, overlocalizations, and wrong subjects due to the extreme tacity of Japanese being probably the most confusing aspect for a westerner. Not defending them, but outside of fucking up a subject, which tends to stand out as a sore thumb if you care enough to spend your time typesetting to a minimal standard and so are very rare, you need a long string of those compounfing failures to actually affect the story flow negatively. Meanwhile, this dude intentionally changed one of the most beloved character's whole personality among other things. Malicious translating always comes to light because translators can't actually write anything worth shit.
