Well according to the verse in dragon ball after bulma left yamcha for cheating on her four times she fucked vegeta and the rest was history.

Toriyama made them a pair since she could build the time machine? And it’s easier to just use an already established female character rather than just making one up on the spot?
since they are both stubborn, head strong, egotistical people,

Bulma likes bad boys, and Vegeta isn't a fool when it comes to booty.

All seems legit to me.

Bulma and Vegeta are ironically the best despite toriyama hating romance. Skipping the build up was probably for the best

It also helps that no one cares about Yamcha, he’s a gag character so it’s not a big deal he got humiliated like this
