Thread #287361428
I'll be storytiming the manga, one complete case per day. Most cases are around 3-6 chapters long.
Feel free to drop in at any time, since it's mostly episodic.

Amuro's death? The one he disguised into?
You sure its not supposed to be Akai's death?
Thanks OP
Yeah, Kid a fucking hax, I wonder what Conan has in plan if he failed to find Kid or he's not cooperative
And this also means that Kid kinda in the know now about the syndicate, I wonder if he'd thought it was the same organization as the one in his series. Would be neat to see this expanded but I guess fat chance
Anyway, what a meaty case. Now this deserves to be the 800th chapter case
>>
>>287362769
I was always under the impression that Kaito Kid and the main BO plot were supposed to be kept separate, but then again Kaito is really the only guy who can pull this kind of thing off so I guess it kind of makes sense.

This means that Conan knew that the BO would be here.
He went through with all of this, putting just about everyone in the line of fire.
While this is going on, he's out there solving an unrelated, random murder like the BO doesn't even matter.
>>
>Sera knows Akai
>Vermouth doesn't share everything with Bourbon (what even is new)
>Bourbon wants to capture Sherry alive, and Vermouth apparently doesn't know this?
>Kid can do ventriloquism
I'm eating good today
And to add to that, Bourbon line about calling syndicate agent in a heli is a bit weird, because Gin and Vodka wants her dead
Sure, maybe Gin's plan to blow up the train is his own rogue plan, but I'd expect him to at least know if someone requested a syndicate agent to be on standby on an heli
>>
>>
>>
It feels a bit weird that this reveal came this quickly. Amuro was the last of the three Bourbons to be introduced (Only just, with Sera being just a few cases earlier) and it's only been a few cases since the official "one of them is Bourbon" scene.

This is Kid's assistant btw. I believe this is his first on-screen appearance in Conan.
>>

The previous volume is when our official translations died. It was a gradual decline from proof reading and the quality of the paper getting worse to them just unceremoniously dropping the series (And every other manga) right before the Bourbon reveal.

It's nice to see Yukiko play such an active role in an important chapter. But it really makes me wonder, what is her genius husband doing during all of this? Isn't he worried at all about his wife and son? With his infinite wisdom he should have figured out something about the BO by now, unless he really just doesn't give a fuck at all.
>>
>>287362730
>>287362709
Seems extremely unnecessary for Akai to remove his disguise just for this short appearance and then put it on again. Especially since apparently Bourbon got a glimpse and got suspicious about his death again.
>>
>>
>>
>>287366404
Yusaku's character is more like Mycroft Holmes, where he solves crimes by having other people bring him data to his place. When he is around Conan has no chance next to his skills and knowledge that border clairvoyance, but you can't sideline the protagonist in an important BO case. Yukiko is fine, since her only skill is acting and disguises, making her a useful ally.
Plus, there was already another case on a train with Kudo parents, although Yusaku showed up only in the end.

In the thought bubble there Agasa is thinking about the kids' experience, but in fan translation it was about him being sorry for himself that he doesn't get to enjoy a mystery.
Conan really is a selfish ass.

Can't help it, Kogoro wasn't around when they found the victim. Though I don't think height matters in case when the door blocks the view, Kogoro would just be looking from above what Conan sees in eye level.

>reference to famous mystery novel

This case feels like a celebration of the series. Was this an anniversary?
>>
>>
>>287368715
Can't find anything on it. The volume was released in 2012, so not even a year for some nice round anniversary. All I found was that at that time they also had a special webpage detailing BO plot, so maybe the special thing was Gosho reassuring his readers he is still working on it.

Couldn't he have thrown the mirrors out the window instead of stowing them again?>>287362404
exactly like that?
>>
Gin and Vodka always look cool and dangerous but they’re incompetent as hell. They don’t realise that Conan, Ai and vermouth run circles around them. I guess that case where they almost snuffed out Conan in the locker was a one time show of intelligence
>>
>>287369456
Perhaps he was worried the police will find suspicious mirror shards scattered by the railway track while looking for clues. It would also look suspicious if the painting suddenly becomes much lighter than when it went into the train.
>>
So, I would assume the status quo should be subverted. There's no reason that Kid or even "Fake" Akai wouldn't describe Bourbon's appearance to Conan or that Conan wouldn't ask Kid. As well as Conan knowing that Amuro was on the train, since he shouted about the fire.
But no, I just assume they're going to keep that dumb jig of him working at Poirot's
>>
>>287369476
Vodka is a typical lackey, so intelligence was never really expected from him. Gin is victim of poorly developed plot that uses BO only for a short time before shelving them again for another 40-50 chapters, and it will only get worse as certain characters will need to be uplifted.

Ran comes from a broken family, where mother hasn't been living with them for 10 years and is always working, and father is a lazy drunkard that lets her do all the housework and cooking, and her boyfriend is a weirdo that just disappears like a ghost. It's no wonder the girl has abandonment issues.

Exactly 1 or little over it? One-eyed flashback had 1,058 billion yen on first day, which was more than The Million dollar pentagram, but still fell 1,13 billion short in final numbers. If this one has a worse start, it might be that they are on a slight downward slope, at least until the next BO and/or Kaito Kid movie.

One has to congratulate on their security when one ordinary man managed to do all that + BO agents smuggled in bunch of explosives and smoke bombs. And that's a train owned by one of the biggest financial groups in the country, that one of their heirs travels in.

Btw it's nice seeing Yukiko scared of someone, given usually she's Fujiko Mine's levels of competence. Seeing her in distress highlights how dangerous Vermouth is.

>Kid can do ventriloquism
I'm reasonably sure we knew it already.
The big things for me were:
1 Vermouth being the one contracting the programming dude, instead of the BO.
2 The origins of Silver Bullet term. This one feels a very big info.
3 Vermouth being fine with Sherry surviving, but not with Sherry being caught by the BO.
4 Vermouth and Bourbon are not in cahoots, as you point out.
5 Kogoro's moustache
>>287362791
One of my favorite cases in the series, surely the best one in a while! OP do you know how Moustache Kogoro called himself in the original?

The great thing about this case is how everyone has a role and it flows smoothly. Clash of Red and Black had some, but sacrificed characters consistency for the events. Here instead everyone gets a moment to shine, plus there's a case, plus plot moves.
>>
>>287371552
More importantly, some mangakas work better when they aren't drawing their favorite genre/characters. Case in point: Aka Akasaka, natural-born edgy writer, totally sucks at making edgy stories. Meanwhile he's very good with comedy.

>>
>>
>>287379664
One of the most unspoken Gosho skills is clothes design: characters keep changing clothes from one case to the other, while keeping a coherent sense of fashion. It's not a surprise to anyone that Gosho is skilled with suits and uniforms, but all the other clothes are always on point.

>Subaru can cook
>Subaru can drive really well (like Yukiko)
>Subaru has glasses like Yukiko's husband, but he's younger and cooler
>Subaru lives at the Kudo's mansion
>Subaru is visited by Yukiko
Sometimes, even the best detectives cannot pick the obvious under their nose. For some reason I think it'd be a good trade for Conan as well: Subaru isn't an absent figure, and shows up both when Conan needs something and sometimes just to hang around. A better father figure than Yusaku already.

It is a little weird for Kaito and BO to intersect like this, since they don't even feel like they belong in the same story.
The BO seems like a pretty grounded group of villains aside from their one sci-fi thing. And meanwhile Kaito is just a wizard.
Conan being a detective makes sense to interact with both of them, but interacting with both at the same time makes the subgenre difference between cases in DC a lot more obvious.

I've never watched the anime and this storytime is my first exposure to the manga.
So every time I see brown-haired Ai, it fucks me up because I keep thinking of her as blonde. Same goes for Yukiko and Eri, to a lesser extent. Uncolored hair makes me think blonde.

She is actually supposed to be strawberry blonde, which is really the lightest shade of red hair. Anime and the merch based on it is not really the best source of character hair colors, sometimes it can even change between seasons, so colored pages from manga are actually the most accurate.
>>
>>287377404
I wish he did the opposite and made the bad guys in magic kaito connected to the BO. I know the bad guys are a little goofy in magic kaito but it's been so many years that I think the audience will excuse a few retcons to make them more serious.
>>
>>287389683
Magic Kaito isn't even getting updated, since Gosho can only work on one manga at the time and Conan is the main bread winner, so making the bad guys from Kid a subsidiary of BO would actually be the best outcome for them that any audience could excuse.

You nailed one of the reasons why the anime was so successful: the first OST was absolutely killer, pun intended. It's iconic as fuck, every single track. Combine this + mystery murder anime + unique character design (the eyes!!!!), which is incredibly rare, it's a recipe for success.
You can make 360 different Kindaichi clones, none would be as memorable as Conan. The amount of characters that can pass the silhouette test, unique eyes, gadgets that are incredibly simple but also memorable... Gosho Aoyama is an absolute legend with character design. Simple =/= simplicistic, art wise he's so underrated it's ridiculous.
