Like, they could've even leaned into it as an actual cheating story, that is to say, Jade and Rose enter into a tumultuous relationship and have LOTS of sex, but they didn't do that either. Instead they made Jade neurotic and Rose callous for a single instance of impregnation followed by however many years of denying it happened. It's highly damaging to all characters involved.

If anything making the cheating a continuous thing would have been even more damaging, at that point neither character would have been forgivable, as it is at the very least there is a tenuous justification for why they did it

Is Rose being callous that unbelievable? It's kind of a thing with the Strilondes to be emotionally unavailable, Roxy excepted. Also keep in mind the entire reason Rose went through with this is because she was planning to effectively commit suicide, and tunnel visioned on the end result, which is something she has done in the original comic

Love and the desire for sex are human emotions. There's vast breathing room for justifications, off the cuff could be something like implying that troll sex is not very compatible with human sex. Meaning Kanaya doesn't fulfill Rose well and Karkat complicates things with Jade. It's not the only way to take it, but I'm not being paid to write for Homestuck.
