This thread is dedicated to all animals of the Reptilia and Amphibia classes. Topics include, but are not limited to: geckos, snakes of all kinds, frogs, salamanders, newts, turtles, tortoises, and much more. Before asking a question, do a search on the internet to see if it has been answered
Classifieds for finding breeders and products:
>morphmarket.com
>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>caudata.org
Most forums will have a "for sale" section on them, so look for that, especially if you have a specific herp you want. Craigslist can also be a good source for cheap aquariums, and make sure to check for any reptile expos that occur in your area.
When asking a question, make sure to include these details:
>Type and size of animal
>Enclosure dimensions
>Humidity and temperature
>Type of substrate
>The decor you use
>How often you feed
>The type of food you use
>If your animal is wild caught or captive bred
>How often you handle
>Who you bought the animal from

is there any reason to not just exclusively feed hornworms to a new caledonian gecko?
I hate crickets. They don't readily take dubias and I fucking hate finding dubias they decided to just let go in their cages. The male readily takes and the female goes ballistic for hornworms and they're not super fatty and offer a decent amount of chitin. The main reason I want to provide insects is for chitin, hydration and stimulation since CGD has all of the nutrients handled.

i haven't done soldierflies but my local store only reliably has hornworms, dubias and crickets. I think wormy things in general are more up their alley since they took silkworms and waxworms before, but i'm not really trying to powerfeed/bulk them so I don't see much of a point in giving them super fatty stuff.

Alright guys I'm in trouble.
I catch salamanders and frogs when I see them, but thing my fat huge salamander was in fact pregnant and laid larvas. I checked online and they eat mosquitos larvas and shit but it's winter there and there are none. I caught small flies and they won't eat them, same for small worms I bought. It's like they won't eat anything. I hesitated releasing them but we're in winter. The weather actually is ok these days and the lake probably won't freeze but I'm afraid it snows or something in february and they all die or get eaten by a predator.
Is there a way to feed them or do I have to release them hoping for them to survive? They're in that basket for a full week and surprisingly didn't die…
What do?

Any fish stores near you? Some of them sell different live feeders like daphnia, bloodworms and stuff. Alternatively you can buy brine shrimp eggs there and hatch them, then feed the freshly hatched nauplii to the salamanders. The brine shrimp hatch within 1-2 days, so if you keep the salamanders cool they should survive until then.

>Any fish store near you?
Not really I live in the middle of nowhere. I went to a fishing shop, where I bought the worms but it's a small shop and at this period the choice is extra narrowed. I bought the smallest of the 2 type of worms used to fish but they won't eat it, they must be too big for them. They could actually eat them if they teared them apart but won't do it.
Alright I'll try to see online and IRL to get the shrimp eggs but I hope the larvas will survive until I get the eggs and they hatch. I'll try to get the daphnia and bloodworms if I can IRL too.

I have been using this as a hide/basking platform for a while now and my snakes love it.
As it's just bare wood texture though, it doesn't really blend in with the enclosure so I was considering painting it. Also by painting it darker, it should hold the heat more for them.
Would general non-toxic acrylic and a gloss be okay to use or is there a specific paint/seal to use?
Also was looking for some sort of texture for the basking platform (artificial grass or something) to give them some enrichment; any idea on what I could use that isn't reptile rug or a layer of substrate?

box turtles and wood turtles can live for a pretty long time compared to other turtles if you're looking for a non-tortoise option. There's also both common snappers and gator snappers if you have the space and wouldn't mind getting something more dangerous.

It's a genuine question, faggot. Reddit says the tank needs to be like 5 foot long but breeders keep snakes in tiny tubs their entire life so I think 30 gallons for a male might be a reasonable middle ground.
>>
>>5095361
Why would you use snake mill breeding practices as a point of reference? Reddit says the enclosure should be about 5 feet long because that’s about the length of most adult ball pythons. The snake should be able to stretch out fully along the length of the enclosure

>>
>>5095361
The middle ground between shitty and reasonable is just “a bit less shitty” it’s not “a reasonable middle ground”.
You’ll spend significantly more on replacement basking bulbs throughout the snake’s life than you’ll spend on a normal PVC 5x2x2. Now, if you get a male and you don’t power feed him, so he doesn’t get big, a 4x2x2 might be a reasonable middle ground, and a 4x2x2 is half the price of a 5x2x2, because the 5x2x2 advice is meant to be something that can accommodate a 99th percentile ball python and you’re aiming for like a 40th percentile snake, but a 30 gallon is a third the size of a 4x2x2, and it is ridiculous to decide that it’ll be adequate, just because the rackniggers do worse.
A 4x2x2 should comfortably accommodate a snake up to 53 inches long or so, and a 3x2x2 would be adequate for a snake with a total length of up to 42 inches long, but even a small male ball should be bigger than that as an adult.

I noticed during my last feeding time my baby pear island boa swallowed a noticeably large piece of substrate. I noticed it in its neck as a bulge. I just want to know what to look out for over the coming days, impaction is obviously a risk but what else is there. I've never had this happen before so im quite worried.
Also, I can't feed her out of the enclosure or place down a mat of smooth surface to feed her on currently. Although she eats fine, it only happens when she hasnt been disturbed. If I make too much movement in the cage she gets defensive and wont eat. Meaning my optimal times to feed her are very sparse and I have to be careful.

While they are neither reptiles nor amphibians, they are pretty easy spiders to care for. They need minimal space, an easy to set up home, and are not really picky eaters.
However, they do molt a few times, and their last molt has a pretty high chance of failing, killing the spider. They will make a little hammock nest and try to molt for up to a few weeks, not eating during this time.
Providing their molting doesn't fail, they are really chill around humans. Handle them often and they will jump onto your hand no problem.

I have no idea how sulcatas got so popular as pets. They're unironically some of the most destructive and stubborn reptiles on earth. Those bastards dig burrows everywhere and are so strong they can dig through concrete walls and bend metal fences. It's like having a bulldozer roaming around your yard. And sadly a lot of them don't even get proper care and end up with pyramiding.

Maybe I should get a female gargoyle gecko so they can mate. Then I could just destroy the eggs since I don't want to breed them. The hairbrained theory is that animals are worse off if they do not fulfill reproductive acts similar to how it's shit to be a human incel who doesn't fuck which can affect mental and physical health. I don't want my guy to be a drydick forever and suspect that having them mate, even if the offspring are discarded, could be beneficial. Crazy idea or no?

Bit of an alcohol fuelled post here, but I love my blue tongue.
It's taken years, but I feel like we finally have some sort of connection (was a wild blue tongue I ended up taking care of, so I only handle when changing the substrate). I like talking to him (or her) though, and definitely understands the word "food". Always funny watching the reaction where he'll start moving towards me and flicking the tongue. Has gotten bold enough where I'll be getting the food ready and he'll start climbing out the terrarium and almost fall out, but then I have to help him back in sometimes. Still has that weird autistic skink skittishness, but I love seeing that recognition when taking in my usual tone.

Instead of misting my enclosures to no avail trying to boost the humidity, I just dump a couple of gallons of water onto the substrate and mix it around and it stays >70 for at least a week. Why did you fucking dicks not tell me to do this.
>>
>>
>>5099839
You have no idea the retarded shit ive read trying to boost humidity in my enclosures, spend 100$ on a mister, mossages (socks filled with wet sphagnum moss), I even had some retard claim its fine to have a enclosure be at 30% humidity for a tropical snake species as long as you give it a some fuck ass humid box that grows mold and is probably as hot as an oven for the snake. I just realized today for whatever reason the only time I have stable humidity is when I place down fresh substrate from an eco earth brick. Had a little light bulb moment.
>>
>>5099842
the humid hide is tried and true, it's a thing
but yes, it's absurd seeing people spend hundreds on misting systems, constantly spraying water and wondering why mold grows, without ever actually thinking about what actually happens when it rains. Oh we need 3 inches of clay balls for a drainage layer, you know, so the tiny drops of water from the spray bottle will have somewhere to go when they seep all the way down through the dirt into the bottom of the tank
>b-but if I do that the ground will be wet all the time
these people are trying to keep an entire animal, sometimes hordes of animals. when they've never even kept proper care of a plant and it shows
>>
>>5099830
>>5099839
>>5099843
I came into this thread to post about how happy I feel getting an automatic misting system up and running for less than $50 compared to the $200 brands people shill all the time.
But just as a quick aside, if you drown the substrate with water you will still cause potential issues with mold as well as potentially killing cleaning crew with each cycle. Also if you place humidity a sensor near the soil it won't read air humidity but the humidity from the surface soil. This isn't a problem with terrestial herps however that burrow.
>>
>>
>>
>>5099915
it is in fact possible for them to drown
it's also possible for them to dig upward and sit under rocks, leaves and wood if you actually deliberately try to turn your terrarium into a fish tank instead of just saturating the soil

I must of not conveyed what I was trying to say effectively, I never meant to say humid hides were a bad thing. Its just when the ambient humidity is far lower than what is required and someones only solution is to other a humid hide was a problem.
>>5099898
I replace the substrate every two to three months, it would be monthly if prices were not so high. Im not really concerned with mould. It only grows when there is not enough circulation in the enclosure.

a statement that doesn't really mean much if the subject is whether or not torturing shit to death for fun is good, what *is* versus what could be are different things. it is just a matter of temperament/amoral consideration but nonetheless people who think this way are the source of the majority of human suffering as well in indirect ways that you'll have to read more about on my substack. life is about choosing the change you want to see in the world and you have chosen this for some reason. i don't have this issue since my gecko won't eat anything i haven't squeezed the juice out through the neck of and held on tongs anyway.
if you justify creating cartel.mp4 on other mammals because uh they're food or whatever it happens all the time, then, You Are Gay. that said i don't come here to shit up a thread by insulting a majority who disagree so whatever just ignore this or whatever i'm not saying having a snake makes you evil necessarily

arguing that you have should have some special exemption, based on moral math, that actually it's good for everything else to get tortured to death for no reason or even for your own unnecessary, frivolous pleasure on occasion, is just cope by moral realists who wish to behave like children. you stand for slop, and are a slop person, and degrade your civilization with your psychotic misery creation.

Hey retard, society runs excellently on assemblies of laws with zero consistency with your retarded overly abstracted moral logicality. Your thought is unnecessary and unproductive. A pseudo-intellectual refuge for a weak ego, even.
Morality can not be logical. To live itself is illogical. It is arbitrary, inconsistent, and feelings based and always will be. The most important part of morality is not your pseuding, but the natural instincts of the people that comprise society.
>>
those who can’t comprehend the nature of creation instead seek to impose rules upon it and claim that if they are not followed, there can be no rules at all
you see this a lot, even among self defense brahs

>>
>>5102765
Objective, rational morals dont exist because there is no rational, objective reason for nature, or us, to exist. The decision to weigh a rodent against the continued life of a reptile is arbitrary and emotional regardless of the choice. Ultimately we benefit from maintaining a stock of our native reptiles but not so much from keeping a mouse around. If mice have souls, free them from being trapped inside mice.
>>

If you feel you can prevent the Geck from ever escaping and the cat from ever breaking in, sure. If the Cat doesn’t even have access to the room with the Gecko, even better. When I lived at home, I never lost any anoles or fish or anything else to my mom’s cats. The cats were not allowed in my room where my animals were and I did a good job keeping my animals contained.
It seems like so many cat owners these days refuse to restrict their cats from anywhere in their home, and that makes it a lot harder to keep other small animals if you live like that though.
It’s one of the reasons why a cat is a relationship deal breaker for me, I have yet to meet a woman under 40 who thinks that it’s acceptable for me to say that parts of the house are off limits to her cat.
>>
>>5102674
I actually don't think it's good to give live rats to reptiles at all. There has been cases where rats have severely injured and even actually killed the snakes they were fed to. Unless your pet is built like a tank or is significantly larger then mice are a safer pick.
