Cats usually smell a bit like ripe garbage, their litter, or attic dust. Long haired cats tend to smell like shit and piss.
Some dogs stink other dogs smell kind of woodsy and good. Overall i’d rather smell a dog. Just not a floppy, drooling one.

Oh third world street cats universally smell like death or feces, without exception. Same for many cats in yuropoorea. They also have fleas.
I’m talking about America, where 80% of our cats are where they belong (inside) and we have one of the lowest rates of toxoplasmosis in the world.

My family had 4 outdoor cats in the last 25 years. That was all in a sleepy village in the middle of nowhere with maybe 1 car every 40 minutes driving over the roads, yet here are the results:
>first cat flattened and turned into a pancake on a field road 2 kilometers away on a sunny day at around age 2
>second cat KIA on age 2 by car, didn't see the corpse
>third time we had two cats at once. One was stupid and cute and the other was smart but cowardly. The cute cat decided to jump over our fence right in front of the house and managed to kill herself via car, while the cowardly cat managed to live till age 17 until kidney failure got him.
