How certain is it that saber-toothed cats (such as Smilodon) had covered fangs?

The saber-toothed metatherian Thylacosmilus most likely had sheathed fangs, correct?

I have no knowledge on the subject, only going off what little I know: It seems about equally plausible they could be covered or exposed. Or maybe they had the option to cover or expose them depending on how they fleced their facial muscles? Maybe there was flexibility in the tissue that let them do both? Or maybe their natural resting position for their jaw was lower than we may think?
I never considered their cheeks covering them before so I find that interesting to think about.

This isn't an apt comparison because not only do most front fanged venomous snakes have their fangs on hinges, stiletto snakes specifically evolved to do so without opening their mouth.
