Technically every house a dog lives in is a doghouse

Dogs used to be working animals, relatively few breeds were intended to be pets. Today things have changed, relatively few people have working dogs, instead they are surrogate family members that people keep indoors.

This is also why people run into problems with dog behavior:

Only livestock guard dogs and junkyard dogs in the middle of nowhere have ever lived outside with few exceptions for people who are basically dog hoarders (people who go dog sledding for prize money).
