I once tried to write a Final Fantasy TTRPG. I focused on D6 and simplified success tables. I also found a way to utilize M.P. in non-magical characters. Made it so that the hit pointsand Mana could interact and sometimes be freely exchanged in certain classes. Based hit and damage tables basically on the very first NES FF, skills and jobs off of FFV (& tactics) based in battle movement off of tactics, and stats were broadly based off of BESM.
The only thing I really didn't have figured out was spells. I did not know how to properly nerf magic. . On the one hand, I could come up with all sorts of skills and items that would mitigate the potential drawbacks; I could not figure out how to balance it so that BkM & BkW wasn't the ultimate class. (Which in turn holds back summoners) . I did consider stealing shadowrun's build-a-spell system, but again we'd have an overpower issue.
I was excited to create this system though where you could get the scene from the end of FFIV where Tellah casts "double-meteo" and it straight up kills him to do it. Which I liked, it adds stakes: punch too high above your level and your spell is a suicide bomb. So I get the idea that M.P. could also reflect willpower, run out and you stagger, go negative and you'll faint, go below recoverable amount and you won't recover. This is how mp works for non magic users how barbarians can tank hits. But you know, of the cost is to high, then no one will want to play with this system.

Since of the should were designed around manipulating the M.P. in different ways, something like D&D's "feats" generation of them would also co-opt limitations and would change priority/ turn order. Even items/potions/gear could affect generation. You could have a tweaker mage that was always taking uppers just to maintain a peak mana level so that he could pop off spells more effectively. Bards could hype up your team-mates and damage the enemy pools, priests and healers could soothe-say to restore M.P. igot very excited while writing this all up, but the actual magic system I still had a hurdle with. I probably should have play tested it with my friend group. (Diablo 3 and 4 basically does this, they just have different names for [resource] and running out doesn't kill you).
