The problem comes when idiots get cats that have no tracking - they live in highly dense cities and they let their animals roam around, get lost, get hit by cars they breed on the streets and they get abducted. oftentimes, these cats will end up giving birth on the street leading to even more stray cats on the streets, getting hit by cars or hurt

I have three of them. The oldest (~10 years) was a local stray who lost its mate to a pair of escaped dogs. After watching him patrol the neighborhood for 7 years we felt compelled to abduct him for a couple years of worry free living. He had another pal he hung with, an unusually large, long haired goober who turned out to be part Siberian. Fucker is enormous. Abducted him as well. Turned out, they hated each other as house mates but my wife felt bad for turning him back out in the cold. Our third addition was a red shorthair abandoned by his mother. Actually tried adopting one of the local possums as its mom. After it got into a tangle with a raccoon it tried to cuddle with, we adopted him fearing he was too stupid to make it on his own.

We dewormed the two older cats- they are probably too wild to take to the vet without being traumatized. You have to be patient with stray animals. Accept the reality that they are wild things. They eventually come around to living with people but are in no way like a regular domesticated beast.

I lost my old girl of ~15 years back in September, I was there the whole time, and I just want to say, it would still kill you had you been there. The whole "at least it was in your arm and loved in the end" thing is fake, my kot was the cuddliest little bean ever, would spoon me anytime I layed down... in the last few days she would constantly run away. They push you away in the last moments, reflexively, and it fucking hurts like hell.
It just fucking sucks. There's no way to redeem any part of it, you need time to do its thing.
Took me a few months and the house was too quiet, eventually I got another. It gets easier.
