The individual camps were all different, some were legitimate prison camps, some were work camps, some were set up as extermination camps from the jump. Many didn't start mass murdering people until later in the war when supply chain disruption made it impossible to keep people fed. The situation being slightly more complex than most people understand doesn't change the reality of the holocaust.
