I've only felt unsafe in two neighborhoods in my life (I avoid seeking them out): one in North St. Louis and one in Poplar Bluff. When you go too far south the people get weird man. We're really two states, we really should be divided by the Missouri River and plus the STL and KC metros get added to the northern part.

Yeah the Boot Heel is wild. The further south you go the more meth heads there are, that's why.
I had a buddy get murdered in Poplar Bluff over drugs.
Basically everything south of the line that divided Misery during the Civil War sucks ass.

I've always wondered WHY. The cities are explained easily, black people, but why are these areas with endless agricultural abundance always so shit? You're growing money in the fields but there's nothing in town but a Family Dollar and everyone's on food stamps? Never understood rural poverty.

That's a good question. My home town had wealthy farmers, but that wealth surely never trickled down.
If it's not niggers, it's the jews.
