They used to work better before they switched to lead free piezo crystals.

They used to make them with flint, not piezo-electrics. Those really worked (and cigarette lighters with flint are still a patricians choice).
As it is you must go through a couple of brands until you find the one that works every time. You should try them in the shop already if it's isn't in a package - if it fails once per five tries or so then discard it immediately.

Yeah, some are basically worthless, while others of that category of lighter are fine to great.
The solution is to just buy a torch with a trigger-ignition.
