Just finished it. Nothing really to write home about. There wasn't anything I'd call "bad" about it but it doesn't excel. The two main characters don't have that interesting of a dynamic beyond boss and employee, and while an annoying boss and beleaguered employee is classic, it just didn't feel too interesting here, even as a pure comedy show.
I feel it could use some extra wrinkle to it all, like maybe Buttons has a jealous brother who wants to take over the place and make it into fine dining but the will left it to Buttons. Just something to feed conflict and have a more deserving character get shit on throughout it.

Honestly, this is the best Cartoons Cartoons short by far, the rest are beanmouth/LA tumblrslop, this one actually fucking wanted to be a silly cartoon, something that’s scarce in our modern industry
Sure this has a soft artstyle too but it gives me Aaron Springer vibes which I do find kinda charming

This was alright. I think it's a little held back by having some of the generic "2010s CN" art decisions, but it at least tries to be wacky and fun and silly which is sorely missing these days.
Another short with zero series potential though, wondering what's the point of even making one of these things if it won't translate well to a show in any way,

Far and away the best short in this series so far. Been itching for some Aaron Springer/Don Martin style cartooning recently and this short has been at the top of my most anticipated.

Just finished watching it, definitely enjoyed this one the most so far and it has the best art direction of the ones released. Feels like something I would've watched as a kid and have nostalgia for, and something I would actually watch as a young adult. Also laughed a decent amount of times.
Current ranking is
1.Button's Gamezone
2.A for Angel
3.Bird and Squirrel
4.Afternoon Super
5.Accordions Geoffrey and Mary Melodica
>>
>>152599260
I didn't want to get my hopes up seeing some actually funny drawings when I saw some stills of it, but I was relieved to see it was hilarious and full of great drawings and acting. My two points of critique are that the setting could be a bit of a limitation and that I hope there's more mainstay cast members than just the girl and the rat but this is exactly what cartoons need. For a pilot, it does an excellent job of getting right to the good stuff, no filler, no padding, just lots of jokes, funny drawings, and exploring the dynamic in the time they have.
>>152601749
Pete Browngardt is an executive producer on the show, actually! I've really come around to liking Uncle Grandpa and can see some of its energy in the pilot.
>>
>>152602697
As much as the nose ring and hair would normally put /co/ off, the archetype of character has always been popular on /co/ too and frequently been FOTMs. Hard to tell if she would have got lots of art or not had the show been picked up.

I'm going off of memory as I've only watched it once and that was a few weeks ago.
I liked the style, it just kind of failed to work as a pilot for me. It was too short. It also kind of confused what the actual premise of the show would be, would it be a traveling band type of thing with various misadventures or what? The antagonists are now friends and casually hanging out with Mary. Are they part of the core band group now or are they one-offs for the pilot?
To me, it seemed like a cute stand alone one-off short was made and then had the world pilot slapped onto it at the last second.
Despite not caring for most of the designs, I at least somewhat get the premise of Afternoon Super. Each episode would be the Games Master messing with kids and setting up unique puzzles and challenges to overcome. It's also open to new villain showing up or more detailed origin of the power beam that shot the kids. I can also see the Game's Master having potential to be a fun character to watch.
I've seen a few people point this out in the comment section of Mary's pilot. Accordions Geoffrey seems like it would work far better as shorts you would watch as bumpers during in between shows and commercial breaks rather than a full stand alone show.

I'm so surprised there haven't been more studios trying to lean into the whole musty arcade/playground aesthetic besides horror movies, especially when liminal spaces and the Backrooms are so popular right now. You could so easily apply them in a comedy context like this pilot does and make considerable bank.

This and the one with the little devil girl are the only ones out of the batch that I could see being shows. I liked how Uncle Grandpa-esque this one was. Also, the dynamic here between Buttons and Cherry was cool and felt like there was some extra layers to it, which means it has more story potential emotionally than Uncle Grandpa did. There's a history to the characters that's appealing and believable. Cool art and gags, funny, snappy dialogue (which none of any of these have had), pacing was good, the show feels full. It feels ready to be a series. Enjoyed it.
>>152602998
>>152605217
I have about the same ranking. I think Angel and Buttons are about on par and there is a power gap between them and the other 3 for sure. I was bored out of my mind watching the bird one and Afternoon Super was just too 2018 to be made and succeed. Accordions Geoffrey was alright, but you guys are right that it would be better as bumpers than as a show. Only Angel and Buttons feel like realized things.
Also, Jesus Christ has it gotten insufferable just to post on here, what is this Spur shit.

Yes, it has actual plot structure. The others are almost completely exposition. Which is fine for a pitch. As anon >>152610265 has noted, they were not full pilots.

>The others are almost completely exposition.
That's fine, they're pilots. And they all have plots. It's been weeks since I've watched them but here's two examples:
>Devil has hard time in devil school
>Goes to angel school, gets tested
>Stays in angel school
>Squirrel is overly cautious and avoids riding bike
>Bird tricks him into riding bike
>Squirrel now rides bike
They have as much of a plot as this one, bonus points for being less randumb.

It's flawed, and Cherry-as-foil is the problem. Cherry's appearance (and that of all of the other humans seen, really) is too grotesque. They fit in perfectly with the Gamezone, which makes the Gamezone less grotesque than it is intended to be. Similarly, Cherry doesn't have the dignity required to be a funny punching bag. It undercuts your straight man to have them pulling more ugly mugs than the literal rat. I think you'd need to slap in a bright-eyed new hire that gets ground down under the joint mismanagement of Buttons and Cherry if you wanted to get a series out of it.

The problem with that idea is that a character like that would be a yes-man to Buttons (Cherry may be the manger but Buttons is her boss)

The problem with that is where do you even take a FNAF cartoon? Would it be an unironic attempt at an in universe kids cartoon? Would it be animated goosebumps? Would it be a Gravity Falls knockoff? There's so many routes you can take and all of them can easily go wrong.

Make a serious horror comic on a freddy pizzeria and have it be loosely based on the books. Its really not that hard, i can even already picture it in my head, you just need to get one of them IDW/dark horse artists that do licensed stuff to do it.

>>152632787
I don't dislike "ugly" cartoons, but I kind of feel you. There is something off about how digital this is imo. The creator wants it to be reminiscent of counter-culture punk designs ala >>152613071, but having detailed grime in every shot doesn't work as well as it should because it's undercut by the extremely clean-looking linework and paint bucket tool color scheme. I still find the grease stains and hairy carpet shots unnerving, but not to the extent of feeling exaggerated. It just looks like we're spending time with the scraggly characters in an otherwise clean and cutesy world. I think this is an intentional clash of ideas, to make cartoonier moments pop, but idk, even if there's intent it only barely works.
>>
>>152627653
I'd prefer beanmouth toons if they took visual cues from the classics like this one does. Everything's super rounded, so lean into that and make everything look a bit volumetric, balloony and 30s styled than chibi gag manga styled.
>>
>>152643970
>Everything's super rounded, so lean into that and make everything look a bit volumetric
This is more an animation issue than a design issue at this point. Cartoons just need to move more, turn more, twist more, instead of just moving in a straight line at a level camera shot all the time.
>>
>>152599371
It looks like a typical generic cartoon in the generic animation sweatshop style, but it gets the Felix Colegrave dial turned up every few seconds before going back to normal. I'd rather just have a cartoon that commits to looking like a Benadryl nightmare 100% of the time, or at least uses the style shifts more strategically instead of constantly peppering them in so neither feels like the default.

I feel like a lot of issues with frame by frame productions stem from how over half of modern cartoons are rig animated. The traditional animation pipeline has kind of been left to rot and nobody knows how to do nice looking animation timing/X-sheets outside of people like Genndy T who actually had to learn that stuff or actually got to animate things rather than just storyboard.
