I didn't post in it much, but I heard some guys were really obnoxious in it, and made everyone lose interest. So now people just post in OC threads. RIP, I was finally ready to start posting a little more to talk about things.

That's lame asf.

I didn't post much either but I started working on my comic again and was wondering where this thing went.

We can make it real again anon. We just gotta do things and not let the lames bother us.

Maybe but I feel like once the people decided it's dead, then it might just be dead.
>>
>>152616415
Well that's fine, it's our general now then. People might come back if it's tried here and there, I don't think anything on /co/ really ever stays dead forever. Like I said a lot of people just post in the donut steel threads now, a lot of them are doing it for webcomics. If you mentioned it to them I think a few people would show up. I wouldn't expect this one thread to go on super long with you and me though. Cool face btw.
>>

I made a thread last week called how's your comic. its the new era of hyw.

Never seen that before, until now.

Thanks, I liked your cyborg drawing! :3
Got me thinking about the differences in robots, cyborgs and androids all of a sudden.

Ashendale is a city where disappearances barely make the news anymore.
Most people don’t see what’s really causing it.
Rhea is a wolf girl who can physically interact with ghosts, which already makes her dangerous by default.
Wolves can perceive things they’re not supposed to, and that alone puts a target on their back.
She just wants to survive high school quietly, but between the school’s carefully maintained queen-bee power structure and a megacorp that monitors everything in the city, staying invisible isn’t easy.
It starts slice-of-life and school drama, but escalates into demons, possession, and the consequences of being able to interfere with things that were meant to stay unseen.

It's still very much WIP with many issues that I'm trying to solve.
>>
>>152616580
I must have missed it.
How did that end going?
>>
>>152616044
>Whatever happened to it?
A few bad anons ruined the threads. The last “good” year of HYW was 2020. 2021-2022 was kind of alright, but this is where it started getting bad. Since 2023 or so, its been on life support.
>>
>>152617024
It's been that bad for so long? Not sure if that's an exaggeration or the truth of life.
>>
>>152616607
>Got me thinking about the differences in robots, cyborgs and androids all of a sudden.
Thanks, I like drawing the former two a lot. Androids I find kind of boring to be honest, but they can be neat sometimes. There are a decent amount of cyborgs in my setting, but they aren't the central thing. What's your guy there about?
>>
>>152617290
It's suppose to be a demon. I'm still working on how the monsters should look like because my characters are very stylized and cartoony so I don't want it too clash too much or maybe that could be the point idk.
>>
>>152617358
I had a feeling it might've been something dream related for some reason.
Oh man, that's crazy, you sound just like me a while back. I ALSO like drawing cartoony juxtaposing monsters, but mine tend to veer away from the supernatural side into more scifi type things. Mutants, body horror, etc. Some stuff can be hard to balance with cartoonier aesthetics yeah, I just decided to roll with it, everyone saying you can't do that kind of thing made me want to do it harder.
>>
>>152617479
Those mantis look really freaking cool. I like the little dish and antenna on its antennae. XD

>I had a feeling it might've been something dream related for some reason.
I'm going for a more otherworldly look for the demons so I can see that.

>I just decided to roll with it
That sounds like such a huge relief honestly. Though I will see how far I can push it and how much I have to dial it back before I just say fuck it.
>>
HYW could come back, but it needs a solid 5- 10 NEW anons with new projects to really put it over. As other anons said, it's been essentially dead for years because of a few retards who wouldn't leave it alone. All the other regulars moved on and are generally happy in their discords. If there's going to be another HYW as a regular thread, it needs to be lead by an all- new group who are actually enthusiastic about their projects and reading/ giving feedback on other's projects. Being passionate about the art and willing to actually engage in some sort of community is going to be essential- HYW failed because the self- promoting "ideas guys" took control and ran it into the ground. Also you have to gatekeep the hell out of Sonic fans, christians, and mexican porn addicts.

I'm mostly being facetious, but they were a few of the contributors to HYW's downfall. The Sonic fan was worst of all.
>>
>>152616708
Post more about what you're currently working on and maybe you'll get some feedback and more fan art like before.
>>
>>152618531
My problem is that I was never a social media kind of person and sharing my art is emotionally and mentally exhausting. For some reason every time I post anything, I start getting very bad anxiety. There some kind of fear I have that I don't understand. I need to get over myself is what it is.
>>
>>152618531
I was really surprised with how much interest people had in it. I never stop thinking about this story even when Im not actively working on it. It's on my mind alot and especially when Im going to sleep.
>>
>>152616044
It devolved into a shouting match between a couple of schizos who hated each other's comics. You'd open up any thread and it was just like 3 comic updates and hundreds of posts of these two retards going back and forth. Any attempt to revive it will just attract them back to shit all over the thread.
>>
>>152616044
It's sad to see what happened to it. It was very active some years ago. It was actually a pretty big help to me back then when I posted regularly, and I even made quite a few friends from it, too. I got a bit burnt out being active on there and left for a long time. I checked back in a few times over the years since and I feel it has become more hostile, for lack of better words. It doesn't feel as welcoming and there's less general back and forth between artists sharing feedback compared to the past. It's a shame, I would love to see it pick back up again someday.

>>152617828
I mostly agree with this. HYW definitely could use new anons and more engagement would help.
>>
>>152618605
That's fine. Social media is quite toxic these days with the way most platforms are structured to incentivize everyone's worst impulses. It takes a lot of awareness and active resistance to not get your brain twisted especially with a developing creative project. You'd probably benefit from a smaller, less public, critique group. I hear a lot of them are on discord servers these days but it also takes some shopping around to find one that's constructive and not bogged down by the same bullshit you see on most social media.

One guy tried to make it all about himself under the guise of "community building" but at the end it was all to prop up his comic and his OCs. And when people didn't fall in line he swatted them IRL and made their lives a living hell which naturally turned people away.

>>152623370
I don't think /hyw/ has a place anymore. It died with he who shall not be named. I think something else needs to rise up from the ashes to disassociate itself from the problems that /hyw/ had.
>>
>>152623037
>Bowing down and tiptoing around a name in fear does the same thing and arguably makes it worse.
Maybe? That also implies you HAVE to talk about him, when in reality his comics were borderline unreadable and his legacy is one of being an annoying troll. Talk about your own projects or something you actually like, there isn't really a reason to keep beating a horse that's been dead for 3- 4 years.
>>
>>152623513
Just don't bring him up. Simple as. Tiptoing around it or calling him out by name does nothing. Just don't bring him up and the discussion won't derail to him or his antics. His memory and /hyw/ need to die off together for good. Whatever happened to those Webcomic of Tomorrow threads?

I personally don't think it has to end up that way but the thing with /co/ is that it's much more a consumer board than a creator board. Lots of original content got squeezed out over the last ten to fifteen years.

/hyw/ is the only place on /co/ people working on webcomics can try showing off without instantly being called a shill, though too much self promotion in general doesn't endear anyone either. If the thread is solely self-promotion and little interactivity between the posters then after everyone does their little ditty the thread drops like a stone and dies in the catalog unless it is bumped by the aggravating drama posters, but that happening is a deal with the devil because the thread no longer is about the comics or the process for making them, it's all filler bullshit.

For it to survive you need people actively engaging IN the comics being posted as well as sharing the comics they're working on. I'm not sure if ridding the community of the cancer will be enough care to resurrect the body if the body itself is dying on its own. I know that I do try and read other people's comics when I'm here because I would like an actually good piece of /co/ not die forever to make room for more bullshit threads, but I'm not sure if other people feel as strongly about it.

Thanks anon, it took a few years for me to find my style and get more comfortable with drawing human characters; my art's evolved a lot since I started this comic. Been eight years according to my post-date for my prologue on its original host (I moved hosting to Comicfury recently which has been a lot better imo).

There's been a number of very fun and cool comics I've checked out while in /hyw/ and while I don't talk or interact all the time with the community it really is cool seeing /co/mrades earnestly working on their projects and how different they all are.

Shoutout to the very first one I ever looked at: Hamster Revenge.

First of all thank you for posting your comic and the one you were previously read, Idk why when I saw those links they just made me smile. 100% will read your stuff.

Second thing. In the Spacepack comic, I literally just went through the pages and thought the girl got hit by a truck and then the comic ended. XD

I'm definitely up for this but yeah 2-3 people wont cut it

8 years according to my original host. It's really more a hobby that keeps me sane while I do my actual job but I love working on it. I've been lurking these threads for years because I like seeing WIPs, even if I don't always follow the comics they're attached to.
Always wanted to try myself but similar to another anon I've been struggling with crippling anxiety all my life. Especially online, where people only ever remember you for things you sucked at.
>>
>>152631202
That's definitely understandable. I used to have a lot of anxiety, but what helped me was just thinking that if I really want something, I can't let fear stop me. One of those things was wanting to share my art, even if it may be (and sometimes was) ridiculed. Thanks to doing so, I improved my art in many ways and as mentioned previously, I made friends, too. Sure, some people might remember poor things about me or my work, but the good things more than overshadow that.

Anyways, I know it is easier said than done. Everyone has their own ways of facing anxiety. I wish you the best and hope to see your work someday.
>>
>>152631202
The only advice I can give is that you’re anonymous so even if the engagement is bad you can always just safely drop the experiment and know you tried. Better to have no regrets than a distant want.

20 is better than 0 anon, go for it
>>
>>152636100
Yeah don't get me wrong- it's hard to get tone across in text, but I am eternally grateful for the handful of readers I had. They're basically the only reason I kept at it at one point. Cynics might call it a cope, but I'd sooner have a few dedicated readers who seem to really "get" the material and love it, over a wider audience that feels more mild about it. Getting one nice comment was enough to keep me going all week!
>>
>>152635937
I think an important question anyone should ask themselves if they're starting out is this: are you making a webcomic primarily for attention or are you making it primarily for yourself?

Not that anon, but no- instagram has only gotten worse for artists over the years. Same could be said for twitter or all social media. Bluesky is OK if you're willing to play ball with an admittedly large webcomic community there, and interact with other creators instead of just self- promo

Very good expressions for being a total darkness comic, I'm definitely looking forward to it being all ready when you're up to ship it.

>If my math is not completely off then that is 60 pages a year, that is really nice speed.
I feel like I could've done more but I tend to get into an ebb and flow with updating like I'm going to die tomorrow to having long hiatuses due to a litany of reasons (health, job, dog dying, etc). 60 a year probably is fine maybe, that's about five updates a month if I actually released on any kind of schedule.

>do I need to know anything about original source to read it
Not really, I had foresight when I started to have the characters explain things so new readers could understand what's up if they hadn't read the original comic. I'm actually really glad I did that since the original ended up paywalling last year (after being free to read since 2009).

>how far I can push it and how much I have to dial it back before I just say fuck it.
I mean, I do have my universe adhere to a certain set of concretely defined rules, but in terms of aesthetic yeah. Then again the premise I am going with lend itself to having that, it might be different in your case how you want the tone to be.

I stopped going to the threads because my webcomic wasn't a webcomic anymore because my comicfury account got banned. So I tried making some new comics just for webtoons and went back to the threads for a while, but i fucking hate the scrolldown phone comic style of webtoons and tapas and lost interest in it.
i am still working on my comic but it's not a webcomic right now since i just post to twitter, discord and deviant art, so i don't post in the /hyw/ threads anymore.
i made this page the other day.
been playing the shit out of overwatch and other video games.
will make a new page tonight after i make this post.
uboss dailies will be coming to an end soon. its on page 324 of 400.
this chapter ends at page 350 and the final chapter will be page 351 to 400.
end of an era lol.
i wont be rebooting it as i mentioned last year.
i can make new comics.
maybe even sneak back into comic fury with a new name to justify posting in future /hyw/ threads for nostalgia.
maybe.

I would say it's a balance for a lot of people but you have cases where people do it because they just wanna do it. If people only make stuff for themselves and never shared it then how do we know that's ever happened? We wouldn't know because they never shared it and if they did shared it then they didn't entirely do it for themselves now.

What's your preference when it comes to the start of a story? Is it more interesting when your thrown straight into the middle of things or when you start from the beginning, like the MC meeting everyone for the first time?

no links, i dont have a comic host site right now, thats why i dont post in the comic threads, but you can see the other pages on my deviantart and twitter but its almost impossible to read like a comic there so no reason to drop a link. im sure you can google me or my comic if your interested.
>>
>>152642941
Depends.

In media res feels more dynamic for storytelling and is best for adventure or thriller kind of media. The audience ends up hooked and aspects of the story and characters progresses as the story moves, keeping up a good inertia.

I feel like the latter has an element of TTRPG to it, the 'you meet in a bar' kind of setup. Not that there's anything wrong with that, slice of life works can comfortably use that kind of opener.
>>
>>152642975
My story starts with my character moving in to town and starting from scratch but I also understand the comic doesn't necessarily need to start from there and can always be explored later.

If you started from the beginning you essentially only know what the character knows from that point. That pretty much means you know nothing and some people can find that slow and boring.

But of course that depends on what the story is about.

I like to be thrown in the middle of things, Star wars starts on "episode 4." You rarely ever get the whole story- Sometimes This issue Batman is old, another His robin is dead, and the next he gets a new one.Pick up another and Batman is now a girl. An example i like to share is Star trek Deep space nine-The Dominion Arc was some quality storytelling and i recommend anyone starting the show there, season 4(?) If you enjoy the characters and want to know how they all met, you can always go back to season 1.

>>
>>152649928
I really like your stuff.
>>
>>152650635
I'm gonna be honest, you need to learn to draw. For one, having to draw your own stuff will make you realize how much of your own script you should edit for clarity/ conciseness/ feasibility. Webcomic writers who have an idea then hire someone else to draw can risk being nothing more than ideas guys with a bank account. Not trying to discourage you, but I've seen more than my fair share of artist/ writer duos burn out because the writer thought they could just write endlessly, without an understand of how much work that is both for the artist, and for the reader.
>>
>>152616044
Its 40 percent promooters who will only plug in their comic without interacting with anyone else or acknowledging any other story, 50 percent shitposters or schizos who stick to the threads like a cancer and will run them to the ground, and a ten percent of decent artists who simply get tired and move on to greener pastures. There is no sense of community, no events, no in-jokes about each other stories, nothing. Webcomic threads need to start from a complete zero without the HYW brand and without the corruption of previous HYW users.
>>
>>152650635
I was the same way anon, I figured out pretty quick that if I want a comic I'll need to make it myself, because artists more often than not have their own ideas they want to make and unless you're commissioning them or you were friends forever and they equally love your writing then you're shit out of luck.

Pick up a pencil and start, the best time is yesterday and the second best is today. The time will pass anyway.

>>152650710
Self promotion will happen in a new thread even if there's a rebrand, the shitposters and schizos will appear in any successor to the thread anyway, and there's nothing wrong with artists leaving for better fields over time; it doesn't mean they didn't start here in the first place.

Now are you going to keep being a defeatist shitbag or actually share what your comic or WIP is?

Yeah these aspects are going to be inevitable. What anon needs to understand is that you can only control your own reaction- if you see another Betz trying to get everyone in line for so.e gay crossover, or another Bones spamming every minute change to his WIP's, or someone just trying to stir the pot instead of posting their art and encouraging others, just don't engage. The pessimistic doomers act like they HAVE to respond to every last shitpost, as if reporting and ignoring wasn't an option.

I have been working on an idea for a book that has information on the types of ghosts and how to deal with them.
It's suppose to be a book from someone who personally dealt with the these anomalies but went missing, maybe a relative of the new owner of the book or something.

I got the idea from this fan art.

So there are different types of ghosts like and they are usually invisible to everyone.

Revenants who are vengeful ghosts that can only been seen right before it attacks
Wraiths are extremely fast and it can only be seen when it's moving.
Phantoms are ghosts that only appear in photographs and cameras
Banshees are sound based

It's pretty fun thinking of these kinds of things and trying to create symbols that encapsulates them.

I miss bones wip posting because it was fun to watch his progress in real time and how fast he made his pages from start to finish in an hour or less sometimes. Bones should of never let the crybabies that wined and complained about his wips like (you) and bully him into only posting lineart, pageart, and finished page. I think it would be good to get some ideas from that format but also keep in mind for your own setting you don't need a fully fleshed out encyclopedia right now. You can have it be that the rabbit found that book but hasn't been able to decipher all of it (maybe this could be a reason for him to be looking for more friends). Whenever it's convenient you can have him go "I recognize that ghost/symbol/whatever!" and frantically search the book. Anytime you need an excuse to move the plot along you can either have him look something up or have the group decipher something else from it.

I have been saying this since I arrived at this thread, Betz and Bones are both harmless and if not them the crazies would have found someone else, they even tried to turn Omeow into a lolcow at one point. My biggest takeaways from that video is that Bones just completely ignores criticism, because everything that guy complained about has also been brought up here several times, and that Bones's writing has always been godawful.
>>
>>152660786
I don't think a 24/7 thread is necessary either but a standardized time for hosting the threads and updating with new pages, WIPs, and whatever else wouldn't be a bad idea I think. Like if a thread starts on Friday, is kept up through the weekend, and then left to sink or swim on Monday.

That way there's a window of time for people to post, it's standardized so people know when to expect a thread (like other /co/ staples like Win-O) but it's not just jerking around with drama or nothing posts keeping the thread alive artificially all the time. May also be a good idea to encourage the thread challenges to simple tasks like a doodle for interactivity.

He'll say this shit for any kink. Furries, guro, literally anything. Immature fool who doesn't know jack.
>>
>>152665845
I don't like it any more than you do but unfortunately B*tz is a part of /HYW/'s culture and history. He's kind of like slavery.
>>
>>152666181
The only "contribution" I'll give him to the culture or history is the Crisis on Co crossover. Anything beyond that should be ignored and stricken from the record.
>>
>>152616708
Oh hey, I admittedly haven't kept up with the /hyw/ threads but glad to see this still underway. The premise and art sounded very interesting, best of success man
>>
>>152659296
>the name sounded familiar
>its that one creep that had full on gore of multiple webcomics' characters as thumbnails on his videos
Like yeah las lindas aint well written by a long shot but I have a hard time imagining how in the fuck does someone like him or his audience looks at that and takes his criticism with any kind of sincerity

>>152635937
Honestly with websites to share/post art its a good time to do like a one-shot or just a bunch of short stories.
Like let creativity run loose and then glue them up into a zine
>>
>>152666589
Yeah it was bad and almost everybody has moved and just wants to put it behind them but you can't just pretend like slavery never happened. It was evil and stupid and absolutely nothing good came from it especially the people still complaining about it but it still happened.
>>
>>152666775
As someone who had been on his Discord server once, its no different than the ecchi stuff Las Lindas has exhibit.
>>
>>152667028
>As someone who had been on his Discord server once, its no different than the ecchi stuff Las Lindas has exhibit.
Cant really speak for the discord itself but i feel theres a pretty stark difference between just ecchi with meh writing and doing something thats like an avgn rage bit but legit instead of being a comedy skit.

Betz=slavery is a perfect analogy.
>>
I want to draw someone’s character from their comic, drop me a reference and a page from your work and I’ll jam something out.
>>
>>152667471
Except one is real and was the foundation of the most evil country in the world, and the other is a retard who managed to knock someone up and still dedicate more time to shitposting than to raising their kid. B*tz could very easily never be mentioned again, and the threads would be better for it, but it's zoomers raised on YouTube lolcow compilations thar can't let it go.
>>
>>152616044
What do I do if I actually want to try physically publishing a (web)comic in the future? Anything I need to know besides finding a publisher and distributor?
>>
>>152667914
>Anything I need to know besides finding a publisher and distributor?
Knowing how to read contracts and/or how to find a publisher that wont screw you over
Also not directly the same thing but knowing how to set up and market some sort of crowdfunding either for the books or for merch may be a solid idea if you manage to get things rolling
>>
>>152667564
Betz and it's consequences have been a disaster for the human race.
>>
>>152667962
the Betz shit is so lame. makes me not want to bother posting here. anyone who says the word Betz is a shitter. Except me. because yeah.
>>
>>152668019
It's proven to be a tactic he uses to center himself as the main character of these threads, under the guise of "hehe we all hate this guy right?" He's been in this thread from the start, posting about himself. Anyway, today is the lord's day, I'll be spending it writing my comic.

Made 3 new pages since i posted this one a few days ago. This one turned out pretty good. building up to a chaotic chicken jockey scene during Tap and Skags romantic date lol.

Im not going to reply to the bait and troll posts towards me. im just posting my art/new comic page i just got finished making and leaving again lol.

but thank you to the people defending me and showing me love, i see you and appreciate you. <3

>>152667564
Contrary to insane Marxist historical revisionism, slavery, which I'll remind you wasn't even an institution in the colonies until a black African successfully sued to keep his runaway indentured servant for life, built virtually nothing in America. The southern agrarian economy, before it was utterly destroyed in the war, was only 20% of America's industrial output and the source of 30% of its wealth, and that was built on a mixture of slavery, indentured servitude, and ordinary labor. So in reality, B*tz' contribution to /HYW/ is a much closer analogy to slavery than you've suggested, because in the end they both built nothing that survived and contributed virtually nothing of substance along the way.

Thank you! This is incredibly helpful. I know I have to be careful and not have the book solve all their problems and answer everything.

I'm glad you like what I have going on here. I'll mostly likely get this done one way or another. It might take forever, but I think about it all the time and can never get it off my mind. I dream of it sometimes.

These threads have been living through it for years. Some truly unhinged behavior. This is a low point. /HYW/ is a shell of its former self but the fact that its still here despite or maybe in spite of it all is a testament to its remarkable resilience. If this dissociative J*ke episode has finally run its course we may be looking at a new era.

>>152673623
>this dissociative J*ke episode has finally run its course we may be looking at a new era.
You know very well that Betz is never going to allow that as long as he lives.

Question about fixing inking mistakes; Is simply using white out, like a white paint good enough to fix an inking error? Is it really noticeable even when you scan the art?

It's quicker to just scan in grayscale.
Then apply quick fixes with your image editor.
Don't need a tablet, just a mouse to fix up simple things.
