It's sad to see how clearly OS Gwen has the best character design and best everything. The sequel changes are so inferior. I dislike how UAF turned Gwen's hair color duller when it was a brighter shade of orange in the original series, got rid of her cat motif (even OS adult Gwen has the cat motif), and changed her magic from light blue to pink. They even watered down her personality. I know she can't be the same after she had all those years to mature, but I want to see shades of that sassy, know-it-all tomboy we all love. They took away her edge.

Why didn't they get Meagan Smith to voice 11-year-old Gwen in Omniverse like they how they got Tara Strong to voice 11-year-old Ben? Gwen is the female lead and deuteragonist so it's no surprise that Ben has far more important emotional moments with her than any other girl. But their chemistry is great. Their antics are genuinely fun to watch and OS does a good job showing just how much they care about each other despite their bickering. And because of her role, Gwen has to be the one who's most often designated as the girl Ben rescues. She kind of filled the damsel in distress role that's usually for the MC's love interest. It's not hard to see why some people want their relationship to be romantic when he's constantly protecting and saving her.

Yeah, hence my statement. In OS the only instance of this was Kai who just kinda fucks off after the episode was over and Gwen of all people tells her off. In UAF there was Julie and uh... a bunch. OV has a chunk too, especially after the contraversial breakup.
Thing is, if "what the show ships" was shown a bit more prominently or was a bit more present you'd be right. You can see how most of the Bwen art is OS so you can infer that UAF & OV isn't mattering too much in the formula or if it does, the ship stuck a bit too hard even after Gwevin became a thing and Ben ACTUALLY got a gf.

Anyway, I think lucky girl was a good persona for her, she contrasted ben quite well and a sly cat persona fit her personality. Ok so, it's a complicated situation
The fics are Breaking Point and Little Moments, both written by shadows59 and co-written by Ericobard. The one we were talking about is BP, which acts as a sequel to LM.
There's ALSO the original version of the fics, written by shadows59 when they were younger. They went back and rewrote them from basically the ground up, since they felt they weren't up to their standards anymore. For example, the original Breaking Point was left incomplete.
The new versions, labeled Reebot, are definitely the best way to enjoy the story, as they add SO MUCH to, well, everything, but the original versions are a much lighter and faster read, LM especially so.
The authors also expanded those stories with several spinoff fics set in the same AU, some of which could be genuinely sold as books by themselves if a few details and names were to be sanded off

I'm biased, of course, but you're in luck. If you don't feel like jumping into a 2M+ words series, you could read the original Little Moments and see if you like it. With how much the Reboots added, the originals are more akin to a collection of story beats than a complete work, so you get to the juicy stuff quicker.
There's a LOT of great chapters and moments in the reboots, but personally i still find that the original LM has the better final chapter/s

I think it would have been serviceable but I have the same issues with it as I do with Ben and Kai, I don't their personalities make for interesting writing in a show about fighting aliens. Ben not being tied down to the very first girl of the series is an amazing thing as it allows you to explore alien bitches. I meant it more in a positive way, used in the way you've described. "Filler" that adds depth and I guess makes characters more "human". Not Naruto Shippuden filler No 457 that looks like stop motion and has no real relevancy to the story. That aside "Dancing Alone" and "What I saw that day" are also neat.

That's entirely Dwayne McDuffie fault. There were tentative plans for a followup to og series by the original Man of action guys on Ben 10 but then the success of the og series flooded them with a bunch of opportunities to do new stuff. One of.those opportunities ended up being generator Rex.
So while the core team at MoA was on generator rex they essentially gave the ben 0 follow up to their b team and brought in Dwayne McDuffie to show run.
And I still don't understand what the fuck happened there. Up until last year it was assumed McDuffie just came in and took a sledgehammer to the show's continuity because he didn't actually care for the show but then his family released some art and development stuff for all the shows he worked on including alien force and his original ideas actually were more consistent with the og series continuity and lore. At some point McDuffie just lost control and made some baffling changes to the characters and lore that made it seem like an entirely different continuity.
Ben 10 Omniverse was an attempt to try to course correct and bring the og's continuity and magic. Although the main MoA team was still on Generator Rex in the beginning.
I don't know much about the 2016 reboot but from what I understand the original MoA guys were way more involved in that then either AF/UA or Omniverse
Long story short, MoA handed over creative control of the series to Dwyane McDuffie and he made a lot confusing changes and the subsequent follow ups were attempts to bring the show back to it's original vision with varying degrees of success.

They were desperate to keep their studio afloat. They just had Omniverse canceled right after having generator Rex canceled and none of their other projects got off the ground.
People can try and blame the hiring of younger artists and writers for the cal arts direction but the truth is MoA did most of the damage themselves. They hired the guy responsible for the redesigns and all 4 wrote a bunch of the episodes including the movie. They wrote more episodes for the reboot than they did for the original show.
Basically dudes were just desperate to keep Ben 10 relevant so they went all "how do you do fellow kids" with the show

These reconceptualizations of Gwen's relationship to Ben seem to ignore that it also completely changes the dynamic with Grandpa Max. He wouldn't be her grandpa anymore which would change a lot compared to Ben and Gwen's dynamic which can mostly stay the same. Here's how that can be remedied: Gwen is a classmate of Ben's from school, and her parents were old friends of Max in his plumber days, but they were killed and Max adopted her. Yeah, this is going the non-blood related route.

That's the point. It opens up the possibilities. Making Gwen's magic about aliens again makes the setting feel more narrow. When there are things that are just there like magic, the krakken, and Zombozo, it makes the world bigger.

that's generally my problem with the whole series after OS. It felt like the setting could be huge with a ton of moving parts but each future show seemed to shrink it rather than expand it despite aliens and even other planets becoming more central. Ultimately I think it has to do with how OS is setup compared to the rest. They were traveling the country and running into alien stuff which made things feel more adventurous and they really lost that feeling of adventure as they kept going

The space cop role is already filled in Ben 10 making Gwen another one adds nothing to the world and since everything is aliens the show has no reason to explore occult and esoteric phenomena. Making everything alien changes nothing. Having actually read McDuffies plans for it literally nothing about it changes. The magic would just have been more Warhammer 40k like and contrary to you views we were going to get more magical aliens and their takes on magic. No one here is confused as to why they did it, understanding why they did it has never been a factor why people hate it. Everyone here just thinks it was a geniunely shitty change and the fact the show's creators try to walk it back through multiple iterations of the show should be enough proof for you to see this isn't just isolated opinion. And no they didn't "expand" the magic, they litteraly got rid of it and no them partially retconning that change doesn't fix it. The simple truth is they changed Gwen's powers set was to make it easier to animate and write for.
