Thanks for the dump. It was kind of a hamfisted mess of a comic but I'll at least give it props for diving right into the concept rather than tiptoeing around it. Seriously man. Uncle TOM the TOKEN and his pet, JIM CROW? Reads like a shitpost parody. I suspect some of the issues I had with the pacing and characterizations would be improved if this was a longer running series rather than a self-contained book. It seems a waste to have the school destroyed so quickly but what can you do if you only got so many pages to work with.

It going full DBZ made it go from awful, to truly terrible. Couldn't give the black guy a interesting magic system he only can use, but just make him fly around hitting people like a shounen reject.

It is clearly not interested in delving into anything deeply, which has confused some anons. While it does address racism, racism and Black history are used as excuses to justify a superficial "rule of cool." The fact that Irons is a folk hero and not real doesn't matter, since it's not trying to portray true history. It's more like, "Wouldn't it be super cool if he had magic and the KKK were like a cool Final Fantasy boss and everyone was fighting like Dragon Ball Z?" It's shallow, but fun enough. The art just leaves a bit to be desired.

John Henry always came across as sort of a story of failure.

He "beats the steam engine" in laying tracks, but the heroic effort he puts into to beat that single machine in one contest kills him... and it was only a shitty primitive engine. Industrialization only gets stronger as humanity advances and not only people lose their jobs but entire nations become primitive screwheads crushed under the wheels of progress if they fail to get on board with it (see countries like Japan vs the Black Ships)
