People like Lauren Faust hate the idea of selling merchandise because it impacts their storytelling. They could be right but they took their refusal to the extreme. Plus the stories they wanted to tell were garbage.

Because merchandise doesn't have the same "push" as it used to.
Dunno which of these are more common than others, but:
>shows generally don't last long enough to justify making toys, and there's no guaranteed reruns to pull kids in like in pre-streaming days
>most adult fans would rather just buy "merch" custom off Etsy or Aliexpress than buy the overpriced official garbage
>kids in general don't really give a fuck about action figures anymore because they already do all the fantasy "play" stuff via vidya
>pushback from feminists make it a lot harder to sell dolls to girls
>attention spans going down the shitter means everyone will buy some new trend for like, a week, then drop them suddenly and move on
>shows in general are dying left and right because nobody watches TV anymore

Video Games made it a lot less lucrative in the early 90s since by age 11-12 or so most kids would rather have a couple $50 NES/SNES/Genesis/PSX etc. games than the big cool expensive playset or big figure that only comes at birthdays and Christmas. Most of those toy shows depended on kids buying Castle Grayskull type $100 super dooper special playset to drive up all the numbers. When video game became more sophisticated, them more kids graduated out of toys and into games.

They still make merch driven shows, but they are aimed at kids below the video game age. Disney and Nick Jr make loads of merch drive toys they are just things like PJ Masks and Paw Patrol. Most preschool shows are heavily merch driven.

Toy commercials were far from perfect, but showrunners who opposed them are likely in a worse spot now then they might have been during the 80's and 90's. As blunt as this sounds, it's hard to feel sorry for them given the crap that were made since the 2010's. A lot of those issues also seem self-inflicted and did more harm than good.

The fun part about some preschool shows being merch driven shows is that they would have Peggy Charren rolling in her grave. Boomers bemoaned the commercialism aspect of toy cartoons mostly because they didn't have as much shit when they were kids; Like for them a toy was something special, but to their kids it was just something to be discarded and replaced a few months down the line when the next trend rolled around. Plus there were always some parents who spoiled their kids rotten and bought them everything, leading to peer pressure and their kids pressuring them to buy them more shit. Toys in the '80s and '90s were really the Fortnite V-Bucks of their day.

When I was a kid Toys R Us had two full aisles of Nintendo merchandise. Not even games, just Nintendo branded toys and products.
You’re insane if you think the economic status quo that made that possible (alongside Batmania, Bartmania, Turtlemania, etc) bore any resemblance to the hellscape we’re in now.
