It really can't be understated that it's not one root cause but a consistent pattern of stubborn behaviour, like them getting niggardly about how each character is referred when both Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man and Miles Morales the Ultimate Spider-Man are involved so they aren't tacitly giving in to critics.

It was supposed to tie into the twist. The woman who raised him is a black woman named Tanya who's married to his dad. He cheated on her with the secretary and they took the baby in and raised him together so he never assumed his mother might have been anyone other than the black woman living with him and his other 3 siblings.
