Kami is dead, Kami remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent?

Not sure I ever though before about the pottery of Saburo insulting Kami by saying all merchants care about is money, then him desperately trying to pay him for his poem, which he refuses because it has a value beyond money for him.

since yesterday there was no storytime because the site shat itself, I started on a project I mentioned before I wanted to do, a proper map of Usagi's japan. for the base provinces I used https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/2CVTR0,which itself was built off a 19th century map of provinces, daimyo domains, and road networks (the tookaidou, toosandou, etc). if you compare to other sources, especially the one I will post next, you'll notice a couple differences the biggest one being Mustu (Hikiji's province) eating part of Dewa. it must be because there's no real answer to how exactly 1600s tokugawa japan was really partitioned, but I took the liberty of making that Mifune's land that he lost. conveniently it also has some mountainous terrain that I think would be where usagi's village is.
this is a very bare bones version, ideally I want to make a better layout and symbology later, as well as try to track usagi's journey. please tell me anything that you think should be added.

This story is full of those little grace notes, like how he establishes Saburo as a ludicrously over-the-top piece of shit you enjoy hating, and then moves on to the merchant and you think okay, this one's going to be the sensible and humble one, but then the merchant immediately rips on his servant the same way Saburo did.

I like how Ishida represents the cutting edge of the changing society. If Usagi is the remnant of the old - a Samurai in an era that has little need for samurai - Ishida's constant use of his Shogunal Authority to batter nobles into submission represents the sort of place Japan is turning into

When the Tokugawa Shogunate united the country after centuries of civil war, there was no need for the massive armies of samurai fielded by petty lords. Huge numbers of soldiers found themselves jobless and penniless. Its a recurring theme in UY

They weren't phasing out the caste of samurai/bushi, but technically they became completely useless for several centuries.
This was because the Tokugawa wanted to create a state of permanent peace in Japan, by turning it into a hermit kingdom with rigid social castes, adherence to tradition and unquestioning loyalty to the establishment.
To achieve this, they disarmed the populace and forced the feudal lords to waste their money on ceremony and grandeur, so as to not allow them to build up any forces to try and become the shogun in stead of the shogun.
So, what is the warrior caste going to do during a enforced time of peace? Mostly, just administrative duties, arts and talking about what it means to be a samurai.
Which is how we got stuff like Hagakure by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, or the fanfic that made practical warrior caste into a honormongering bullshitto club.
Well, it wasn't just the books fault, there was also the whole social order of the time where the only way to get up was by one-upping your peers at your devotion to your lord and shit.

Good news, everyone! 4chan has stopped shitting its bed, so I can implement my plan and start posting short bonus storytimes of assorted Sakai works in the next few threads! I'm not dumping it all at once to prevent the thread from dying early, even if those stories are all very short.
First, a story from a Shi comic. This here was the best issue in the entire series, because it had little to do with the boring, strongly sexualized, Japan-ish themed woman warrior from the 90's you can see on the cover, but instead it featured many Japan centered stories by talented guest artists. And Sakai was one of them!

I'm no historian, not an expert on Versailles and the stuff happening there between the sun king and the revolution.
All I remember hearing from some French history cartoon and some bitts off of youtube videos and some history magazine bits, is that the Versailles started off as Louis XIV "The Sun King"'s hunting lodge at the edge of Paris.
After a "humiliating" visit to his minister of treasury, he decided to build up a palace worthy of a king for himself.
That's how the hunting lodge got bulldozed and in its place a brand new palace was built.
Once finished, Louis moved his court there and preferred to handle matters of state as well as parties there.
It was apparently expensive to get oneself lodgings at the palace, but French nobility practically bankrupted themselves in order to be close to Louis, out of the simple fact that this way they could affect their kings policies.

In my trip to the Land of Dragons last year, my paternal uncle made it known he is a Daoist supremacist, which I thought was kind of interesting and something I hadn't known about him. He said, and I'm not making this up:
>"Buddhism? Feh. That's a foreign religion, it's for Hindus and weak-minded peasants that need to cling to some flim-flam about a Pure Land or Nirvana. No, nephew. The DAO is a *THINKING MAN'S* religion. It's the only religion for a TRVE SON OF OF THE HAN."

I know, right? When I found the first page in super low res, I just had to track the entire story down. And it blew my expectations out of the water. While the story is simple (but perfectly serviceable), this is some of the best art by Sakai... Ever!

47 Ronin comes from later in his life when he was looser with art, and is also trying to look heavily based on Ukiyo-e, whereas this feels to me it's more aiming for the sort of 70s manga that him and the other 80s furries loved, like Lone Wolf and Cub.
Anyway I said yesterday I'd post this, so. The interview with Stan that got posted on the Usagi fan FB page.

>I wonder if he has the same attitude regarding Confucius/Confucianism or if he see it as compatible with Taoism.
I don't know about Enmanon's uncle obviously, but traditionally it seems that taoists think Confucianism is a religion for bureaucrats meant to keep them loyal and nose to the grindstone, and that's Fine, I Guess while you're still in your career, but when you retire you throw all that off if you have any brains, because you see what hollow bullshit it is. Here are a couple passages from Chuang Tzu and the Records of the Grand Historian repsecitvely:
>Confucius said to Lao Tzu, 'Some people try to grasp the Tao through argument. They try to make what is not seem as if it is. Like debaters, they make pointless distinctions and then claim they are actually significant – as real as this roof! Can such people as this be called sages?'
'Such people are the workers kept in bondage', replied Lao Tzu, 'wearing out their bodies and bringing anxiety to their hearts. Like the dog who is tied to a leash because he catches vermin, or the monkey which is brought down from the mountains because it is skilful. Chiu*, I'm telling you, telling you something you have not heard of and cannot discuss. Those who have heads and feet but no heart and no ears are numerous. Those who have their bodies bit who value that which is without body or form, are virtually unheard of!'
>*Confucius' own name.
>After he had taken his leave of Lao-tzu, Confucius said to his disciples: 'Birds fly; fishes swim; animals run. These things I know. Whatsoever runs can be trapped; whatsoever swims can be caught in a net; whatsoever flies can be brought down with an arrow. But then there is the dragon – who can say how he mounts on the wind through the clouds, and rises to heaven? Today I have seen Lao-tzu, and I can say that I have seen the dragon!”
