It's 10 years since Gwenpool got her own series and in honor of it someone already storytimed the first issue. Well, I figured I'd pick up that ball and do the rest of the series as well, one issue a day.

So today it's Unbelievable Gwenpool #2.

Definitely a snapshot of its time.

At least we had lights like Gwen in those dark ages

It's a shame nobody other than Hastings as any idea how to write her. She's one of those characters like Howard who really only works in the hands of her creator (insomuch as that counts with Gwen). Ironic considering she debuted in Zdarsky's shitty Howard series.

THIS IS SO SHIT WHAT THE FUCK YOU FAGGOTS LIED TO ME

Oh hey you decided to storytime next issue after all, nice

Might be Gwen's first epiphany here that her actions have consequences, and it comes from M.O.D.O.K. of all people

Our first introduction to the Gwen Gang. I'm sure she misses them every day. Tony didn't make that much of an impression on me but a big softie doesn't hurt. Sarah has a ton of moments both mask on and off that make her stand out as one of Gwen's closest friends in her early days. Batroc is going to get some great moments early on here
>>153260314
Back when Gwen's police cruiser was still in use. I forget if it got destroyed or phased out but it's funny to get her mileage out of it.
>>153260342
Jane Thor is certainly an odd thing to look back on. This whole era is in general was, though it's a keen reminder of the era Gwenpool came from, for better or worse
Also I love Sarah's spells

Gwen is such a fucking dork. Moments like these I think sell how in over her head she was back then, a wannabe whose only experience with firearms were CoD and thinks bedroom karate will work in a fight.
Though it also highlights why MODOK kept her around in the first place, name dropping Jane's real name like that was worth the the full page. Jane's identity was a well kept secret at the time, Sam himself only found out a month before, so having Gwen casually blurt it out loudly is funny.

Gwen doesn't have the best taste in heroes but seeing her fangirl is still cute. A recurring trend of her meeting people she idolizes who in turn think she's psychotic and want nothing to do with her.
>>153260421
Gwen's pretty under-powered at this point, but moments like these where she pulls a fast one without having her powers yet are great. Especially given Gwen's pretty dumb, and considering the near aftermath of this it might still be but thankfully Gwen's other power is plot-armor.

The sudden realization of her own mortality. As if seeing Cecil roasted in front of her weren't enough. I like Gwen being shell-shocked from nearly having her head caved in by Thor's hammer and the dawning fear that she might not be as safe as she thought she was, adds some gravity to her situation. And compounded by also having it click she's a nobody compared to the cast at large, it's a good low-point for Gwen to work up from after a very bumpy start.

Really fitting for Batroc, the actual merc of the crew, to be the first one to notice Gwen's fucking useless and is not going to let her be a liability to the team anymore. I really like that he's not just immediately protective/sympathetic of her, Batroc is a 'bad guy' so it's not like he would have any real reason to cover for Gwen yet just because she's screwed herself over, and further hammers in how low on the totem pole she is despite initially thinking this was going to be *her* show.

Thanks again for the story time, OP. Looking forward to more if you plan on continuing, will keep an eye out. #2 is a good continuation of the first issue, Jane Thor is always going to be weird to look back on, but I think it uses her as well as it could given her entire gimmick was the mystery of her true identity, which Gwen basically spoils to everyone in earshot. It also introduces several of Gwen's core cast we'd grow to love, especially Batroc with the tense ending, and builds up the themes of Gwen having to realize how out of her depths she is and comprehending the very real dangers she's placed herself/others in, as exciting as it may still be. Looking forward for Batroc/Gwen interactions in the next one

Post-Avengers (the movie) was a bizarre time for Marvel.
They suddenly had billions of dollars coming in from millions of fans they'd never had before and wanted as many of them to latch on to the comics as they could get, switching up genders/races/morals of dozens of characters, introducing a shit-ton of new teen heroes, the Nu-Humans, Secret Wars pulling a total reset (but not really) to get as broad appeal as possible.

Yes, on a few occasions. You actually see an example of it a bit higher up, where she's calling out Doom's 'obviously temporary continuity blip'. She criticizes Deadpool as being too 'lol random' for her. She makes a few comments on the logistics of Marvel as a whole, how they wouldn't need SHIELD if they had a competent CIA, wouldn't need the Spider-Man if they had decent cops, etc. One of the biggest examples is much later on where a future version of Gwen demonstrates how the word of the editor/publisher is absolute no matter how little sense or constricting it is for a story, stuff like that. In a crossover with the Champions, she points out how fighting racism is lame and not why she reads comic-books, which always got a kek from me.
There's probably more instances I'm not remembering, but the point is Gwenpool would get critical at times, whether it be for story beats, tropes, or the industry as a whole. Marvel would never let her say anything TOO scathing I'm sure but it'd be a missed opportunity to not point out some elements, especially for a comic-book fan.

Has Gwen even met Batroc at all since the end of the series?

Nope, not once. He appears in the corner of a panel in Gwenpool Strikes Back (this is also where Tony/Sarah have their only other cameos) and she mentions him by name in Love Unlimited but otherwise they've not seen each other since Unbelievable's ending.

One of the things is that at least in Unbelievable the point isn't so much to have Gwen critique then current Marvel. The point of the run seems to more be both a critique of escapism and diving into media to cover up having to deal with your problems and also on the reality of the flippant way low tier "unimportant" characters are treated by creatives, by publishers and by fans. Like the whole thing with Batroc is that he's "just" a guy with a funny accent who loses to Captain America because on a meta level that's all he really exists for, but that in the setting there's a reason he's the guy who fights Captain America at all.

Basically that a character being a low tier, a Z-lister or obscure doesn't mean that character is invaluable both narratively and for fans because fans might connect with the most random characters. It's sort of why Gwen has to go through this whole thing of realizing the characters and no names she meets aren't just meaningless NPCs (the whole thing about her playing Not-GTA reinforces that) but that if you're writing or reading you need to think of these as real people inhabiting a real world. Or something.
