Is there any practical uses for used cooking oil and grease?
It's flammable but idk how to use that to my advantage .

How much are we talking?

You can filter it, mix with a small amount of gas and use it as biodiesel

If it's just a little you can use it to season cast iron
>>
>>2976777
It's maybe a gallon. I figured I could heat it homogenize it and maybe use it as a primitive fuel. Then again I kind of expect there must be some obscure uses that I might never think of.
>>
>>2976780
That's not enough to worry about making an oil heater for. If you could get an indefinite supply I would've looked into that

Yeah just filter it super well and dump it into something you may have that runs on kerosene or diesel
>>
>>2976782
I'll use more and collect it if I have a recycling use anyways. Thanks.

I just know a lot of people will say you can make lamps, but I'm not retarded even outside cooking oil is going to have a strong smell. Might make some touches none the less for uses further from the house.
>>

Based on this, if I wanted to collect it in bulk for shits and giggles how would I go about getting a 55gl drum. I know you can buy the things new and get them shipped but they are way over priced like that. You have to find places that have them stocked like rain barrels. Anyone know the places I should look?

I think you could burn it with wiki torches.
Get a few of them, vent the emissions but keep the heat. There are various ways to do this.

>tiki torches a la fry grease
who needs citronella when you can have your patio smell like burgerking
>>

late to the party, hope OP sees this

I filter it and keep it to use for bar chain oil lube on an old chainsaw.

Yeah it stinks to burn. That's why the mention of away from the house.

I made soap once. it was shit, did not make foam and smell like fried chicken.
>>
>>2976817
Some cooking oils and grease gave an anti-foaming agent mixed in them.
>>
>>2976769
Mix it with diesel and use it in a heater. Run it through a paint filter first.
>>
You can dump it into any basic/older diesel engine and it will work as is, but only do this in the summer, in the winter it will gum up and clog the whole thing. Obviously, filter it well before doing this.

I used to work as a cook in a shitty part of town. Our grease collector stopped coming after an assault so the boss had us leave jars of grease around the area. Went back last year and the whole neighborhood is sepia toned and smells like fries. Water beads on the sidewalks.

your local chinese restaraunt would gladly trade you a can of coke filled with piss

Vegetable oil go rancid and gum up pretty fast if left open.
Add lyre to make soap. Scent if needed. Takes a few weeks to harden.
Run a rope through the hole of the lid as oil lamp, which you can blow tiny jet of air with tubing.
>>
>>2976769
Filter it, add some 2,4-dithiapenthane and sell it as truffle oil.
>>
>>2976871
Elaborate on the jet of air thing.

Oil doesn't solidify, anon.

In a home defence situation when they start breaking down your door, heat up the oil real fast and dump it on them.

i wish to make a used oil heater

Where did you pour out the grease?

LMFAO
this would make a great indie horror film
>>
>>2977067
We didn't pour it out. Just left it in jars or cans full of used cooking oil with about an inch of solidified grease floating on top.
>>
>>2976952
Honestly I would
>>2976972
Lard will though and that is mixed in with my grease.
>>2977017
One day I'll have my own scalding pot.
>>2977041
Apparently all you need is a break disk.
>>2977071
I have seen this around really greasy restaurants and oil change places.

I might ask a science board, I have a feeling grease has some sort of use use that might not necessarily be "practical"

Buddy of mine uses it to quench steel when he is blacksmithing. I'm not saying it is a good idea. I don't know shit about blacksmithing but he does do it.
>>
>>2977126
Thats a good idea.
You could also use it to season cast iron pans, it makes a good tough, non-stick, waterproof, protective, coating for any metal things if you can back on several layers
>>
Just make soap. Try to filter the oil, doesn't have to be perfect, you can use a big funnel and some steel wool.
Then you add lye, mix it a little, then add 1 cup/5L of oil of powder laundry detergent, it makes it foam a lot better and give it some grit.
It's very basic soap, but it nukes any kind of grease and it's cheap af to make.
>>
I used to collect it for cutting boards, soaked them in it then baked them at low temp in an oven, helped a lot since i got a lot of them raw, if anything wet touched them they would curl up and break, especially the ones made out of glued cubes.
Used it for quenching metal and also to protect metal from rust.
Then i used the rest to douse wood chips i put into a paper bag and use the bag for fire starter, some oil broke trough the paper bags, i just put another bag over it.
>>
>>2976780
>It's maybe a gallon

Dump it on your neighbor's driveway while hes at work
>>
>>2976769
I dump all my used oil in the firepit.

If you are homeless in a colder climate, you can coat your body with grease to keep warm. This is what I expect is happening because the grease is being left out, free for the taking.
>>
>>2976786
If you're in the US, check Craigslist for used drums. You should be able to find one in usable condition cheap.
>>
>>2976769
yeah, burn it in a smudge pot and drink beer next to it
>>
>>2976769
Oil lamp if you need heat, oil lamps are kinda shitty for light. You just need a heat proof material and a cotton wick. I made mine out of soapstone (carved with a craft knife), works great on cold days. It smells more than a candle but less than wood or ethanol burner.
>>
>>2976769
Maybe you can use for bluing some metal.
>>
>>2976769
The most common and useful thing is to use it as a basic lubricant. It's not motor oil, so it won't withstand high heat, but for everyday uses it's fine. If you really are homeless then you might use it for lubricating your bike chain, zippers, locks, and folding knives. You may also need it for personal comfort such as treating dry skin, sun burn, or bed-rash caused by unsanitary conditions.
>>
>>2978718
No.
Cooking oils go rancid and start to smell and turn into this gel and get gummy after a while.

Some oils, like castor, the going-rancid effect is less pronounced. Coconut oil is similarly more stable. I had an old lip balm with olive oil in it, opened it, and it smelled disgusting. Flaxseed oil is the worst, so much so that linseed oil is used as a furniture finish.

> bluing
I wouldn’t call that bluing, That’s basically the same process as seasoning a cast iron pan. It makes a pretty good coating, kind of like a bake-on paint.
