I normally don't browse /diy/ but I can't find another board that this is relevant too.
I'm expecting a small wind fall of 40-50k. I am also on a fixed income, very low five figures per year.
I qualify for low income housing, but even with that, it still takes a large chunk of my income.
I'm thinking I can figure out a better housing arrangement that's cheaper.
So far, I'm looking at cheap mobile homes, but there's usually a HoA fee or land lease fee which kills the idea.
I'm thinking about buying a small land lot for a few grand and then parking a mobile home on it. Is this viable? I'd only need to pay utilities,insurance and an annual land tax.
I think that would be cheaper than any other option available to me. What do you think?

There's something to be said here for assets vs liabilities. If you don't have a significant income, do you want the liability of owning land and an RV?
Do the maths on what you current accommodation costs, and the amenities it provides. I know a lot of people who've ended up in serious trouble because at a time when they should have prioritised earning a higher income, they tried to semi retire. Ended up rural poor.
Could you move into a share house or illegaly sub-let? Would that be a better option?
Perhaps you want to move somewhere where there's better paid work, 50k is your ticket out, so do you move somewhere better or somewhere worse?
If you don't have business experience and or have a thin work history, starting your own businesses is a huge risk, probably not worth taking.
Do you own a reliable vehicle? Would buying a new car save you money over three next ten years? Is that a priority?
Could you just put the 50k into a retirement fund, given your low income, do you have any retirement savings at all? Because if you don't have enough to retire, even an extra ten dollars a week can significantly improve your quality of life.
These aren't decisions you have to make in a hurry, chose carefully.

I basically gave a plot of land to a homeless couple. i was about to blog post but basically I was steward of some land, gave it some people. they put a trailer on it and thats it. im sure they are better off. it was only $300 a year for the taxes

this is what I'm thinking but trying to figure shit out. It's very difficult to get a legit price for doing this.
If I wanted a mobile home I'd have to run utilities to it, the internet gives me very different figures for this.

Can't give you figures, but I know of quite a few people that bought maybe an acre of hilly land, super cheap because it's basically useless. Have a construction company come in and bulldoze/excavate a path off the main road and carve out a section of the hillside. A well and sewage could be an issue - laws may have changed A LOT over the decades and I believe a well is about $10K. But again, the land could be extremely cheap. Pull a double-wide in there, put it on blocks and you're done.
