Young people always think like that. The teenager who replied that, 40 seems like an impossibly old age to them. They imagine that when they're 40, they'll be mature. Wear cardigans. But, 30 and then 40 comes quick. I felt the same way when I was young and picturing my future. But, I'm 35 now. And I still have fun getting fucked up and being a dickhead on the dancefloor. Transitioning from youth into maturity isn't a hard metamorphosis like caterpillar/cocoon/butterfly. And young people sometimes expect it to be. Because growing from 10 to 15 to 20. Is huge. You become a different person, fundamentally. Maturing. You're 10, you play with toys but 15 your old you would never, you're 20 you watch a classic art house films that 15 year old you would've hated. And teenagers assume they'll keep going like that. But, growth slows. You don't change much past that. if you do, slow. I feel the same person I did ten years ago.
When that person is 40. They will wear a hoodie. And, a teenager will make fun of them for it.

I struggle with this because i'm 37. use to wear plain t shirts and shorts/jeans and felt like a big toddler man child. but if you go too far the other way you look like some spic peaky blinders larper. I'm just wearing a button flannel shirt and jeans now with brown boots and a nice watch I like. I've truly given up.

There are a lot of different directions you can go for your wardrobe or style. But to make this as easy as possible. Men in their 30s or 40s or 50s, who want to look age appropriate should be shopping on Drakes or looking though their current and previous lookbooks to pick out inspo to work toward. You ofc will not like everything you see, the point is to pick out specific pieces that you do like and learn how to incorporate them into various outfits, liking entire outfits that you see is fine as well. Getting the fit of your clothes right is the most important thing to look mature and put together and not like a slob. This is 4chan, anons will inevitably come in to flame this because we're all obstinate assholes but this is the easiest way to learn how to dress yourself as an aging man, without looking like a complete amateur, or like you're confused about your sexuality.

I'm 39 and essentially just wear better versions of what I've always worn. I live in a fairly rural area and work in agricultural automation, so I lean heavily into western and workwear. Henleys or flannels, straight cut jeans or cargo pants, ropers or workboots. For outerwear, I have a brave star type III, an Aero Teamster leather car coat, a couple surplus military parkas, and an oilskin raincoat for really shitty weather.

They also don't realize that all their fashion and media trends are just fabricated by a bunch of middle aged white collar men so I don't really care about their opinions on stuff like this anymore either.

cmon guys it's not that hard. when you're young you dress for versatility/comfort.
either you're at work all the time or you're in a house party or you're lounging at home.
when you get older the variety of events you have to go to explodes - even if you don't have kids you might have to goto some kids event. even if you don't have a date you have to goto some gal's bday party.
you have to have a diversity of outfits just for this reason.
also you do have to start being more intentional about your choices.
you can't wear comfy pajamas to the gym anymore(unless it's winter), wear a quarter zip instead, wear athleisure.
you can't be going to an event party in a flannel, buy a polo or a suit etc etc buy a nice sports coat
whatever life you wanna live you have to dress for it or you simply will not get invited anymore. adults have no patience and are not forgiving.

you had me, but then you dropped this line. There are stuff you just don't wear anymore when you're pushing 40, hoodies might be no 1 in this list. You can wear them, but you'll look like a bum, a literal bum from the streets. Either that or a colossal faggot soiboy.
The rest of the post is spot on tho, that's exactly why old people wear (mostly) what was "in" when they were around 20.

common sense

if you're fit, you can pull most of the stuff you wore when younger, just a bit more formal and/or expensive.

The zipper and graphic are the main factors at play here. If the hoodie was blank and was a pullover it would be ok, low class/zero effort but not man child territory. Color matters a lot too, solid grey would be the best option. A general rule is to avoid anything flashy and or would be commonplace on tweens (graphic clothing, skate shoes, most basketball shoes, basketball shorts, snapback hats).
As boring as it is simply wearing a fitted button down shirt, slim-ish jeans and a pair of leather shoes/boots will make the majority of normies think you are fashionable and successful. If you work in some kind of eccentric field you can get away with more creative fits, anything goes if you are an entertainer.

I don't get how people on a fucking fashion board think there is nothing between ultra manchild mode (hoodies, cargo shorts, printed t-shirts etc.) and being dressed like Michael Douglas in Falling Down. Just go outside ffs

A woman's age is a sign of her beauty and fertility. Whereas a man's age tells his level of success in life. If you still dress like a retarded teenager or a manchild in your 30s, then it shows that you're a failure of a man and a bum who has nowhere important to be, no one to look presentable to/for, nor have enough shame and culture to treat yourself with respect and dignity. The way you dress isn't just about you, but also a reflection of your upbringing, values, and the people you associate with.
