there isn't a scarcity of leather, but there is a scarcity of GOOD leather
and you gotta remember, calf leather is prized for things like dress shoes, bags, etc. because it is soft with a tight grain, but not a lot of people are eating veal anymore, so less calves are being slaughtered for food, so good calf leather is getting more and more expensive
