What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bick4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them
How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush
>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

Only hiking boots I have are the Meindl Perfekt, which are amazing for tough hikes and harsh weather conditions, built like fucking tanks and their weight reflects that. I'm considering buying a pair of Fracaps for easier hikes. Here's another pic of the Meindls after a long hike.

Why “potato shape” to describe the MP boots? I generally find their excessively rounded and bulging counter heels absolutely hideous and laughable. Too feminine, also. Not to mention the horrendous look of their abnormal welts. Pic related is what a pair of White’s usually looks like.

Not in my experience. Uncomfortable how? To stand on for long periods? Rubbing heels or toes or something? Pinching?
My biggest gripe is Iron Rangers are really wide and the Moc Toes are really wide everywhere but the toes, which are super narrow
If you have the right feet for the last, they're fine
>>
>>18676112
> Uncomfortable how?
They say it’s hard to break them in, your feet will get bloody blisters and even after they soften up they can give you arch or heel pain if you wear them for long. Which makes perfect sense since they don’t have a fucking midsole.
>>
>>
>>
>>18676072
None of my RWs have that exaggerated toe spring. I use shoe trees and I beleive they help reducing or even preventing toe spring. Anyway, here's my experience with Red Wing
>Moc toe 875
Sole was a bit stiff the first day, after 2-3 days they became very comfortable. Probably the most comfortable boots I own for standing on them for hours straight.
>Iron Ranger 8111 old cork nitrile sole
Took a week of daily wear to be fully comfortable. The lack of midsole is very unforgiving regarding shock absortion. Have to wear thick socks with them if I want to spend a lot of time on my feet. Otherwise, the upper is very comfortable.
>Beckman old model
A pain in the ass. Not even fully comfortable yet. I think it's because the old beckmans had a very stiff leather. Should have gone half a size up.
>>
>>
>>
>>18676127
> What does a midsole have to do with blisters on your feet?
Who said it has something to do with blisters on your feet? It makes a difference because it vastly improves the process of molding the whole sole (insole included) to the structure of your feet and the mechanics of your walk.
>>
>>18676188
Perhaps. I went a full size down from my sneaker size. Worked well for the IRs and the 875s. I think half a size down for the beckmans would have worked better than a full size.
I went half a size down for Trumans and they fit perfectly.

they don't look that badly worn, the edges are still rounded over from the factory, besides the front
the wear pattern is weird though, outside at the ball and inside at the side of the big toe, probably some extreme pronation going on and you'd feel that from the previous owner, so a resole would be necessary if you don't want to ruin your ankles

I've come to the conclusion that the 875 is just not a good fit for my feet
Just slightly too wide while also too narrow up front. If I were to size down a half and go up a width they would still be too narrow up front while also being possibly too short
I think I might try the 1907 which everything I've read suggests would be a better fit, but is a lot uglier
Any other good moc toes? Might go for the Whites Perry. I know my perfect size in Whites MPs, are they the same?
>>
>>
>>18676709
I have considered that but I think it would be too long and the ball of my feet would not be in the widest part. Also I have narrow ankles so I think the heel would be too wide
Again, some boots just aren't a match for certain feet and I think the Moc Toes aren't for me

Hi, greetings from Norway. Here's my pair of whites farmer ranchers. Bit the bullet and got them back in December, paid over 1k usd all in all. Received them in march. Pricey and maybe borderline retarded as a blind purchase, but I've seldom been rational in my decisions. Got them in size 10 EE, red dog leather. They're half a size too big. Could've been worse (a lot, tbhfamalam). And my left foot is smaller so the facings are closer together on that boot. I'll mitigate the fitment issues by getting some pieces of red brown leather, making thick full length kilties and wearing thick socks. On day 4 I wore them out on a 4hr 6km hike in forest, snow, ice and bog. Pic rel is the aftermath. Got no blisters or sore spots, so I guess the fit is good enough. Halfway I went through the snow and plunged my foot into water, soaking it in the process. My autistic brain didnt like the asymmetry so I went back and plunged the other one, soaking it too. Dried them afterwards for over a day, stuffing them with paper towels. I guess the imperfect fit makes the barrier a little lower for just using them for their intended purpose, since I don't care as much. Now I'll start saving up asap for another pair, and this time I'll pull out all the stops and make a custom pair together with whites for my malformed feet (wide forefoot, microscopically small heel and left/right size difference). While waiting for the whites I copped a pair of barely used rw blacksmiths in size 10D, but that's a story for another day. They fit like a glove, but give me issues with my peroneal tendon on my right foot for some reason. The whites don't.

there are about 3 different models of pecos from red wing with different materials each.
the 8060 is the heritage line and it has a leather insole and all that stuff we'd expect
the 1132 supersole are a work boot in the real sense of the word and are cheaper and have the foam and a glued on sole. they're actual work boots
the 1155 nailseat is considered another actual work boot and is the tougher version of the 1132 and has a poron insole
all that to say, the heritage line peco has the leather insole and that's the one i'm gonna get

One thing you never hear mentioned is how shoe trees aid and speed up the break in process due to how it pushes against the heel counter
In my experience shoe trees help the heel counter shape faster by giving it something to mold against even when it's not being worn
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>18677087
in my experience it's the opposite
if the shoe trees don't match your foot shape then it can make things worse
i have a pair of alden 990s that fit amazingly in the heels out of the box, it was the first dress(y) shoe that didn't give me blisters there, that's why i prefer boots generally
stored them in 3rd party shoe trees with a fully profiled heel, they are the right size and slide in without much effort, still after a year in storage it pushed out the heel counter and pinched it slightly at the top enough to rub my achilles tendon
sure you can sand down the wood to fit better, but you generally don't figure that out until it becomes an issue
i have given up on trees, i only put them in for cleaning+conditioning
if the maker doesn't offer lasted trees, then it's not meant to be stored with trees as far as i'm concerned

Here's a pic of the farmer/rancher boots after about two and a half weeks. Love the patina I got on the toe area after postholing through hard snow/ice. I've also had them on for a few hours doing forestry work and they did pretty well. Now I wanna know how a proper logger heel with a full lug sole does.
These ones have the 4811 last and the arch is kinda high. But my feet have such high arches that it's barely perceptible to me at this point. Love the support it gives me though. So for the next pair I'm thinking about the 690 last. Guessing it'll be somewhat of a bastard child between the packer and smokejumper.
Does anyone here have experience with getting custom boots made with White's? From what I've heard they're better to work with than nigs or jks (albeit Frank's is probably the best bet still, but I'm already in the whites ecosystem at this point).

i got my horsehide and latigo pairs (pic related) through bakers, very smooth experience tho i only did minor adjustments like going with the perforated toe caps, rolled top, pull loops and then an extra inch of shaft height on the latigos, no changes to the lasts. kyle was even kind enough to throw the rolled top in without charge because i accidentally fat fingered when picking

>Does anyone here have experience with getting custom boots made with White's?
Did a pair of MPs through Bakers a million years ago. Did their oiled smooth work leather instead of CXL, changed eyelet color and removed the stamped logo on the top
Just go through Bakers and it's super easy

Plenty of options really.
You can go with cheaper Chinese brands like Brake House and Crush on Retro. Brake House is cheap because they use local leather, while CoR is only a middle man. He buys from bootmakers in china.
Japan, Indonesia and India offers "mid-range" priced boots. They use American, European, and Japanese leathers. They're also made to order (MTO), so expect a minimum two month wait time.

When I move down, there are Blundstones with no GYW and that annoying visible logo, Solovairs with their ugly pull tabs and soles which I don't like, Doc Martens with the fake GYW and yellow stitching, etc etc.

>>
>>18678367
>bridge
Are you referring to the vamp? The top part of the foot?
Anyway, conditioner could help as it relaxes the fibers but I think people are too quick to condition when it's not needed. You might just need to wear it more and let it stretch back out
>>
>>18678369
>vamp
Yeah that's it, the vamp of the boot, because I feel it across the bridge of my foot.
>I think people are too quick to condition when it's not needed.
Interesting, I thought I was slacking because I've never conditioned it, just boot polish.
>>
>>18678371
Most people over condition. Not saying they don't need conditioner every now and then, but it's less frequently than people realize. Once a year is usually good, and I typically do it after the winter
Reddit bugmen have this weird ritual they do where they condition it every week or so and end up rotting their leather and ruining their boots

Uhhh you have bought your indys, right anon?
>>

Alden will either go out of businesses or outsource
They are located in Massachusetts which is one of the most expensive states to live in. But they pay barely above minimum wage. They have no young workers. Everyone there is extremely old but bought their house when it was 100k so minimum wage is fine to them. But they cannot attract any new workers. No one will make shoes for $20/hr when the average home price in Massachusetts is $650k. But they will not increase wages because they will have to increase prices and they're already notoriously overpriced
A couple things will happen:
1. They keep dropping production and raising their prices to make up for it, pricing out anyone that would still buy their overpriced products
2. Shut down operations because they're no longer able to sustain their business with the workforce they have
3. Outsource manufacturing to China, Spain, Mexico, etc. destroying their brand's image and alienating their customer base
So what happens? What's the solution?

They're the R. Watsons I mentioned. I don't know the model name and I don't see them on their website anymore. They do have some others that look about the same from the ankle down though, they've got colored shafts but you don't see that when you'r ewearing them.

pre-made sock liners aren't really being sold, since cobblers usually make their own
there are some on google if you search leather sock liner, but they are not even worth buying
you can get some leather lining for about the same price, trace out your old ones, cut it out and glue it in
if the old ones are just curled up, just soak them in water and dry them under some heavy books
or just pay a cobbler to do it

I think I'll do that. Is this something I can just get at Tandy? Probably just gotta ask for some really thin stuff

What are some decent brands that make loafers in yurop? Velasca and Scarosso are a bit too expensive for a shoe I'll barely wear. Something around 200 rather than 300-400. Thinking about pulling up to a summer wedding in loafers.

Meermin is NEW YORK SHITTY.
>>18680398
Their cool looking ones are closer to 500 though plus 500 just to get stepped on when dancing with the huzz and puked on when drinking with the bruzz? Not sure that's worth it.

Iunno bro my friend just gets whatever random shitty 2nd hand loafers online and wears them daily for a few months before they get blown out and gets new ones. He has bitches on him 24/7.
>>18680426
Who the fuck can dance? That's gay. Can't expect people not to drink themselves into puking at a wedding. That's why I said 200 and not 400 though.

You write like you can dance.

Not necessarily ruined, but there's diminishing returns. I'm spending 1k on my engineers, but I don't wanna spend 400 on loafers.

I'm a little disappointed with my CNH pair, but I'm guessing it's mainly an issue with the nature of the sole. I got a pair of the Abbey unlined sneakers and they were great at first. The sole, and correspondingly the insole, compressed in the left shoe right underneath the ball of my foot. Can't wear them a full day now without pain there. Hoping a resole will fix it and isn't too expensive since I'm guessing they'll need to replace or reshape the insole too. Just disappointed since they didn't even last 2 years with very irregular wear.

Especially given the cost that's a shame to hear.
I haven't had a problem with mine through similar irregular wear for close to 3 years (Really only in the summer).
In my mind it shouldn't matter, but mine was a limited offering compared to an in-stock make. I tend to wear down around the inside of the insole, maybe similar to you, but mine have only become more comfortable.

they produce just straight slop at this point
>shafts different lenghts
>heel blocks different lengths
>crooked lasting
happens on almost every other pair, not even exaggerating

that was for patina thunderdome and the guy made a whole cope video about about it
guilty conscience trying to convince the judges that this isn't fake patina in a desperate last bid to win something (he didn't)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTpC-cDN8Rs
tldw; he came to the conclusion that walking like an autistic child and kicking one boot with the other is somehow his natural gait and "all his life he had to conciously try to walk with his feet pointing forward"
that is why the inside at the toe is completely rubbed raw
all the obvious sandpaper marks are from him "walking at night through bushes and hitting curbs"
i like his kilties and he seems like a nice guy, but dale is a bit of a schizo retard
