Not sure what I expected, with storage getting more expensive and everything getting shutdown.
>>

this shit is so sad
I really don't think enough is being said about the storage crisis right now
The prices are outrageous and if they are that crazy for a home buyer they can only be more insane for people running these websites and servers
I really don't think many DDL sites will survive this year
>>
>>108248787
As always pirate stupidity:
> Thought they could run this on commie dreams and hopes
> Did not enforce a hourly/daily data cap on non donators (donators could get better caps according to the amount they donated each month)
> I asked a question on their discord on why they used .zip and not some better format like .7z, which would allow them to save 20-40% bandwidth. They told me it was to give better compatibility because apparently pirates are too retarded to install 7zip on their computer.
This is what they get when they give things for free to third worlders. They leech off the system until it collapses.

oh believe me I am
I don't need EVERYTHING but there's a lot of games that are a bit harder to find on the spot and also it's good to keep all the bios stuff etc archived somewhere, doesn't take much space but makes life a lot easier if we're entering the dark times of file hosting

>seedboxes will get more expensive too
That's obvious. That said, it would still be much cheaper to not host all the content, let alone not loose the entire website if one seedbox owner can't pay their bills. Their priority should be converting the site into a P2P site, and moving the content onto a bunch of seedboxes and users willing to seed them regularly. It should be much easier project than nyaa, there isn't a constant stream of new content, all encoded with a half a dozen formats and translations. There isn't a batch of new PS2 or Wii games I'm aware of.

Enforce that shit anyway and force people to update their torrent clients. Most modern clients should already support it if they use libtorrent

I didn't know about this and I don't know how secure that is, but I could imagine there is something like an "owner key" where only people with that key can edit torrents. So they could just mix very popular games with unpopular games via statistics, so everything is seeded.

If you had just said you were transitioning to a torrenting-first policy on the most popular and biggest torrents, everyone would understand.
I really don't get this shit because now there is a mad scramble to scrape the site, which is going to balloon costs WAY HIGHER this month in particular than every month before combined.

Literally everywhere, those gens are lightweight and lots of trackers have full romsets. Problems start with gen6 where game size starts to bloat. And nobody wants to hoard gen7 because of how huge those games are, and how everyone perceives them as recent and therefore not worthy of being preserved

They were getting scraped daily by fucking paywalled scam emulators like Hyperspin dude.
These people sell 12tb "packs" of games + emulators for upwards of $60 and then scrape the data from places like myrient instead of hosting it themselves to avoid legal trouble.
Thats what the post was mentioning, these retards just scrape over and over and over until the sites hosting the content can't take it anymore and fold.
Truthfully, torrent hosting systems maintained by intelligent people with rate limits are the only way to keep data safe and hosted online.

The data will be fine anon, the most obscure and important of it will likely be archived within a day because its not that much data.
Its really like MAYBE 50tb of important/unique shit and then hundreds of terabytes of PS3/PS4 games with PC ports that make almost all of them nearly irrelevant.

Is he retarded? Just seed the torrents then. That also gives him a very easy way to control bandwidth by reducing or entirely cutting off seeding on popular torrents.
This project seemed doomed to fail though. It has no barriers to entry, no bandwidth limits, and no indication of its monetary requirements besides a small message that reads like a tip jar rather than a request for critical funding.

Absolute retard argument given MAME has been running off one dude uploading magnet links to GitHub for the last decade or so. Just seed the latest torrent or only the unchanged files from old torrents and let the swarm deal with the rest. It's not rocket science.

I have a couple of chinkhelds loaded with roms.
i am just too lazy to download any more even though i have many TB to spare.
also i feel in general about retro games that 9/10 of even the acclaimed ones basically fall into the 'had to be there' category.
>>
Who cares? Everything worth archiving is already on usenet/pt and the rarest stuff is probably like 10tb top lol
Public torrenting would help if normalfag and retards didn't literally stop seeding or delete their files asap as they finished OUT OF SPITE or that the stupid fucks on r/datahoarders would seed stuff instead of bragging about having a 4K LOTR remux in 7 languages
>>
>>108261250
>Public torrenting would help
Public torrenting would have helped, period. Even if absolutely everyone deleted their torrent after finishing, which is arguably false, they would still be seeding while they're downloading. Even if literally everyone limited their upload speed to 1 b/s, the server wouldn't be working more than it has been working now. No matter how you look at it, there would be zero downsides, and almost certainly it would have helped a lot reducing load on the server.
Web seeds were created literally for this, there was absolutely no reason not to use them. I have nothing but respect for people keeping huge archives and allowing other people to download from them instead of having them only to brag on reddit, but it's painful to see how they ignore the easiest and most effective solution to their biggest problem.

a VPN and your good to go if your country is anal about it but yeah, wouldn't surprise me if its an ego thing or something
You don't need to download more than one game every few days anyway, unless its a small pack. Main problem imo in current time you have 3 type of people
>your average casual torrenter, who used to have hdd but now have like 2tb ssd, hate sharing because of the invidiualist/hustle/sigma/patrick bateman culture
so its worse than before
>your average data hoarder with 100tb and refusing to share anything because he think he is sitting on a mine gold, despite leeching everything from people and having mainstream shit
>the casual pt guy with 20tb+ and who is willing to archive and share to everyone
Main problem is that the new generation doesn't WANT to OWN ANYTHING or NOT PROFIT FROM IT (aka donation or selling your leeched stuff) and the "data hoarders" are just mentally ill leech

It's not just because of 7-Zip OS support, the zips are in a specific standardized format called TorrentZip to ensure that they're identical archive files for the same dump, so you can join torrents with those files among other things. There is a 7z version but it didn't catch on so much with ROM manager tools since it takes much longer to compress archives and update existing ones.
GGn uses it for disc-based consoles where the file savings over zip are more worth it, though
>>
>>
>>
>>108264228
No, it puts out .7z files and isn't disc image-specific like CHD but has standardization like TorrentZip

>Most modern clients should already support it if they use libtorrent
They should but both qBit and Deluge have it as a separate build, most people using qBittorrent won't even know the libtorrent 2.0 build exists as the update prompt links directly to the download page instead of the folder view.
Transmission supports fully supports it since 4.0, I don't think uTorrent supports it but anyone paying for that shit is beyond help anyway, other clients idk.
Some people avoid libtorrent 2.0 because it has worse write performance (should be fixed in 2.1), also on initially Linux it would use more ram due to caching, you could tune it but I think anyone seeding a large amount of files just reverted because with slower writes plus zero adoption of v2 there was not much point in using it, also most private trackers don't allow v2 torrents and a few banned LT2.0 because it aggressively retries connecting to every peer.
I guess the solution is just to have a big banner and a one-time popup for retards, then hope you get people to update their seedboxes to support it.
Hopefully one day we all move to v2 so that anime torrents will finally no longer need a separate download to fix mistakes :)

I mean it does ruin most of the internet at this point. Faggots will still praise this shit out of it and spam Luddite death because being a bootlicker is trendy I guess.
I don’t think the dude was saying anything outright about AI so it’s pretty much telling about you more than anything.

The guy not being able to make a fucking torrent it's a pretty big clue that he's not the sharpest pencil in the case, but stupid or not, he was able to keep the site running until your ai grifters made storage prices raise tenfold. So, yeah, sorry, but no, ai is to blame.
Or, rather, there are endless chatbots already, endless image models, even a video model that makes Hollywood nervous, and "ai" was never a problem until openai decided to buy all fucking on the market to stop other companies from making their own models, so I'd specifically blame sam altman, I hope that piece of shit will get cancer.

Aside from that, there's tons of stuff on there which isn't even video games. Go digging around and you'll find Laserdiscs, DVDs, HD DVDs, Blu-rays, CDs, SACDs, wallpapers, magazine scans and all sorts of other shit on there. Just keep in mind that you're downloading fucking Dawson's Creek box sets if you're trying to archive everything on there.

It's just a github page with magnet links that track the latest MAME sets.
That's all any of these sites need to be. People always want to add midwit complications to put their own spin on it or cater to idiots.
>>
>>108264136
...so use torrent7z?
Honestly, you can make reproducible archives with tar --sort=name and just set the date stamp on every folder and file to the UNIX epoch anyways. Then just compress it with xz -T1 -9e or something.

So much shit in there I don't know it's worth downloading at all or hoarding, that's the issue.
I have a 2TB HDD I don't use but this is too much shit I can't even decide what's worth saving and I know for a fact at least a good chunk of this stuff will be available elsewhere, not much more inconveniently.
In fact, come to think of it I must have used this website maybe once to download Fable 2 and that's about it.

Since he's shutting it down and most likely not adding anything anymore, why won't he just make some plain old torrents of all the files he has right now (even one torrent with all of them would work) and let everyone seed the files they want???
Some people could seed all that, some only parts of them, but the whole data could still be complete, even if each person holds only a small part of it.

All bad ideas.
For optical dumps you have CHD, which is already reproducible and more efficient due to format awareness.
Pre-gen 7 ROMs are so small it kind of doesn't matter. Just download the whole set to update. It's maybe 100GB at most. Later gens usually have their own compressed distribution format, which is close enough to state of the art you can just use it directly.

tar.gz, zstd are sequential, 7z is sequential and solid. zip allows for random access. I could, from the web, get the listing inside every zip file for a fraction of the cost of downloading even 1, and I could run arbitrary commands on a single file inside a zip.
However they are retarded for hosting single isos in deflated zipsLength Method Size Cmpr Date Time CRC-32 Name
-------- ------ ------- ---- ---------- ----- -------- ----
1273823232 Defl:X 582718415 54% 1996-12-24 23:32 ce12d364 Busin 0 - Wizardry Alternative NEO v1.03 (2003)(Atlus)(JP)[SLPM-65378].iso
-------- ------- --- -------
1273823232 582718415 54% 1 file
If they stored it without deflate or not in a zip then you could read the iso, the correct format is chd which would save 60% at least and is randomly readable (which could save 99% depending on the users needs. )

I got all the important stuff.
PS2 is not complete because the entire library is +16TB but I did get the good exclusive games it had.
Someone could easily upload this to the IA or make a torrent.

it won't have the gamesharks and other unlicensed discs that were only made dumpable by a may 2025 update to the "redumper" software. thus, not a complete redump ps2 torrent as the anon requested.
>>
>>108274283
They have some Redump categories that I haven't been able to find elsewhere (at least not nearly as complete or constantly updated), such as DVD-Video and Audio CD, which contain bonus discs bundled with games, and game related DVDs/CDs in general.

It would be cool if Annas-Archive backed it up. They already expanded into music by scraping Spotify, so why not games too. They have plenty of resources to host it too. And they do a better job of preventing abuse.

yes
>How does this shit work?
it emulates real hardware
>Can the emulators run on phones/tablets?
all retro consoles can be emulated on android, chinese manufacturers are selling handheld consoles with a bunch of emulators and roms preloaded, ranges from just snes handhelds up to handhelds that can emulate switch and even some ps3 titles and lighter pc games

Of course, like I am downloading crap I don't care about, I hoard for myself not others. I have a full collection of most consoles already also, I just got the full file list of the directory and I'll put to compare with mine for any item I might not have on this front.

I have fairly complete megacd, psu, and psa sets I could touch up into full copies pretty easily and magnetize. If there's time toward the end of the month I'll do a full mirror of the redump audio CD collection.
