Why do so many people here hate GNOME? I got into an argument with a KDE user and they complained that GNOME didn't have thumbnails in the file picker... But I have thumbnails in my file picker on Ubuntu lol. Do they complain and point out old issues that no longer exist?

GNOME is very opinionated, does thing differently from everyone else for no good reason, and its developers have an arrogant "my way or the highway" attitude that rubs people the wrong way.
There are plenty of basic features (system tray, desktop icons) that need Tweaks or extensions, and extensions have a tendency to break every version, making them impractical on non-LTS distributions.
https://woltman.com/gnome-bad/ has a bunch of examples of bad design in GNOME.

Oh and they have a history of trying to force everyone else to adopt their design decisions. Client-side decorations, and the idea that shell elements should be drawn by the compositor instead of a client for instance

Ubuntu is not stock GNOME. They're almost two completely different things. Ubuntu's GNOME dare I say is closer in functionality to KDE than stock GNOME. Anyway, Ubuntu and GNOME had this bug where the thumbnails wouldn't load in the browser file picker unless you'd loaded them in your file manager first. Maybe they finally fixed it.

I don't hate GNOME, I just cannot have it working the way I want so I have no reason to use it. I choose what best adapts to what I do instead of having to adapt myself to it. If I left Windows, it was precisely because I had to adapt to its bullshit, not the other way around. When it comes to software I want the path of least resistance and GNOME has a lot of that going on. Specially when you deal with the human element behind the project.

GNOME devs are extermely opinionated and use their power to force their strong opinions on the wider linux ecosystem whenever they can.
Other than that, I don't mind it. I don't like it, but it's fine that they do their own thing.

I like the work flow, I like the interface for the most part. My issue with Gnome is its strength. I want desktop Icons for example. Not possible. I get why its like that, but I like to make retro arch shortcuts for games that I am currently playing so I can jump right in. I like having files that I work on allot on the desktop. I like how simple it all is, but would it be much to just have a way to turn on desktop icons? I avoid using extensions and only have 2 installed.

this is the last good GNOME version before the GNOME team went full retarded. Remember when they said you don't need a minimize button and it confused users in their "usability testing"? Yeah they think if you use GNOME 3+ you are stupid

Gnome is a macos ripoff without the polish
KDE is a winblows ripoff without ads
In light of that you should buy a macbook if you want an opinionated, gnome esque experience, or use kde if you want a windows esque experience

My Plasma setup is a lot more like MacOS than GNOME ever will be.
Plasma looks like Windows by default because most Linux users are already familiar with Windows, but its key feature is customizability, which Windows or MacOS can only dream of.

It’s when you want to have as a wallpaper, instead of one large image that is either cropped or stretched, multiple repetitions of a small image to make a pattern, like bathroom tiles.
It’s a basic feature every desktop has except GNOME who removed it with 3.0.
You can’t have a solid color as a background without installing GNOME-Tweaks either.

GNOME are fuck bois that want to force standards on everyone so their silly bullshit is then "Default" They've also been pretty open about employing pedos but the entire western world is run by pedos so I don't see that as a big issue

Gnome and Ubuntu's own DE are different things you can switch between on any Ubuntu version, as far as I know. I stick to Ubuntu's DE, I'm already pretty comfortable with it, don't care for the more crApple-like thing.
