The corpo programmers thing is on point. 8 years ago when I showed my interviewer a cool project I'd been working on, he looked me dead in the eye, gave me a puzzled look, and asked me "Why did you make it if you didn't plan to monetize it?", two other people in the room nodded along. In that moment I realized the Faustian spirit thing is real, and that some people won't do something unless there's monetary incentive in it. They happened to be Indian but I guess that didn't have anything to do with anything.
>>
You should post more, tinfoil-hat. I really enjoy your website, but there is too little there.
>>
>>108264267
Sounds like those people are "normies". They're called that for a reason. They're obsessed with looking "normal". Doing technical things for fun wouldn't be considered "normal". I don't think it would matter if they're Indians are not.

Best thread i have seen in a while.

I just realized my site has a lot of personal info. I am going to clean that up soon and post here.
>>
>>108262754
I had my own website in the past after writing a static website builder using Makefiles and shell scripts. I have a variety of interests and I'm probably going to make a new one soon. I'm just not sure if I should have it tied directly to my real name or have it pseudonymous and have a separate website solely for career related things.
>>
>>108262754
i have a site but it's mostly a portfolio shit for jobs so i aint posting it here. i like seeing other people's shit though.

i hosted my own (single user) pleroma instance for 6 months as well but took it down because i barely used it and it was impossible to find people on the fediverse who weren't either politics obsessed (mastodon) or hentai obsessed (pleroma). i still have a few months on that domain so i ought to use it for something
>>
>>108263896
enjoyed the "gifted kid burnout" page, this phenomenon also always struck me as incredibly narcissistic. i probably fit the profile for one of them on paper, but i don't blame my problems on being told i was smart as a kid because i had enough humility to know i was nothing special and that the standards for "gifted" were just incredibly low
>>

4chan used to have just text only boards if anyone remembers that. It was fun to remake it. A lot of the CSS and HTML I got from one of the OG Perl scripts so it looks pretty much how I remember.

"Gifted" was never really about the kid, it was a way for economically-stricken parents who cared enough to browbeat the school into tracking their kid into "advanced" courses (whether or not they were ready or the teachers were qualified), away from the riff raff.

NTA
But a casual glance...
Precise same monitor setup/layout on multiple workstations.
Headset on each workstation.
Multiple workstations.

Doesn't entirely reek of residential to me. Looks like a place of employment. I'll put my money on callcenter.

How does /g/ host their own sites? From a VPS, or self hosted server?

I do short story writing in a semi-coherent fantasy setting. Feel free to hate on it. Most stories are first or second drafts at best, I just have too many fucking ideas so I keep writing without tidying it up too much.

thanks, I'd rather use mediawiki or something alike. but they have terrible markdown support. Since my Blog and Notesapp are already using markdown, BookStack was the best choice. I'm also a bit annoyed of their frequent updates.
>>
>>108273917
Also frankly Mediawiki has a bad tendency to just fucking break for no raisin.
BookStack is Apple in that it "just works". You played around with custom fonts at all?

>You played around with custom fonts at all?
you mean on BookStack? -no
>>
>>108273948
Yeah I slapped this in the header to get a custom monospace font, works pretty great:
<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=IBM+Plex+Mono&display=swap" rel="stylesheet">
<style>
body, button, input, select, label, textarea {
font-family: "IBM Plex Mono", "Courier New", monospace;
}
.CodeMirror, pre, #markdown-editor-input, .editor-toolbar, .code-base {
font-family: monospace;
}
</style>
>>
>>108273954
nice, but i'd rather stick with the default
>>
>>108273527
>From a VPS, or self hosted server?
Yes.
And a dedi or two.

Horses for courses. Some things can cope with a shonky residential conneciton and squonky power profiles. If it goes offilne for twenty min no biggie. Some things you *really* don't want to be putting on shared hardware. Not if it's your arse on the line for that data.... You do what suits the load...

I never trusted VPS. I always get bare metal/dedi so I can fully control the whole stack and use only what I need.
But it's hard to find bm/dedi that is cheap, very few offer something like that.

Cheapest tend to be kimsufi - if y'can get 'em. They don't tend to stick about long.

I got a dedibox from online/scalaway from France, for about 16 euros/mo.

>Intel® C2750 (Avoton)
>16 GB RAM
>250 GB SSD
>1Gbit/sec connectivity
>250 Mbit/sec bandwidth

They have even cheaper offers but this works fine for me.
>>
>>108274428
Nice AV mixer.
Can do that with software nowadays. That was a good waste of 30k+.

>>108274437
I do about £130/yr. Cheaper if you pay up front. I've less RAM. But I've 2TB o storage....
>>
>>108274479
I'd rather have less storage and higher performance.
Don't have a lot of assets so 50GB would be more than enough for me.
But they don't offer such a low storage option with better server specs
>>
>>108274529
Fo what it's doin, it's plenty performant. Ofc, should I have felt more was required, more it would have got.
Horses for courses...
>>
>>108273962

>I want a personal website but I'm scared I'll get doxxed or harassed through it
you can set up a neocities account with no personal information except an email address (which is not publicly exposed unless you choose to disclose it in your web pages)
or you can get a domain with domain privacy and get a VPS; it would take a court order to your registrar or VPS to expose your identity; if you're really paranoid, you use services that accept anonymous crypto payments and use a pseudonym
if you don't provide a lot of personal information, it's unlikely someone would be able to dox you
as for harassment, if you don't provide contact information, there's really no way they can harass you, unless you count DDoS attacks as harassment
>and I don't know what to even post on it.
that's the real problem; you have to have something to say
but don't you?
you don't create anything? like anything? have any opinions? draw frog pics?
>>
>>108275049

Not really. The wireguard tunnel and the VPS to home connection are fairly stable, and I'm content with the uptime. Also there is barely any lag from having to go through the tunnel, it's almost as quick as if it was hosted on the VPS.

The Science Adventure anime adaptations seem pretty bad except for Steins;Gate, and even then the Steins;Gate Visual Novel is far superior to the anime.
I used a picture of the Chaos;Head anime in my reply there, but I've never actually watched the whole thing, its known for not being very good. If you are interested in the Science Adventure series just play the VNs.

the suckless read is great
they are only one step ahead of nocoders, they are nothing more than adding wrappers to monolithic libraries that do all the work
they wouldnt dare doing an wayland window manager, even if you can be way more minimalist with wayland, because it implies actually coding stuff
nope, they use a monolithic giant called X11 and write two lines to put a window on the left, thats it
their browser is just webkit, there is nothing minimalist about it
it is incredible that those guys pray on beginners on software or complete morons that dont and wont learn to be their shill
the more you just learn about the software and protocols, the more you umderstand how retarded they are

The problem with reinventing the wheel is that often it's sub-par programmers who dive head-first into projects before doing one iota of research. So instead of using an established, well-documented, well-known, well-tested tool, you have to use your coworkers god-awful slop.
