FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
Usage: paste this into Powershell, run.
irm https://get.activated.win | iex
>and Office?
Same link, select Ohook option
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

Most of the name brand USB sticks are decent enough these days.
>Lexar
>Patriot
>Kingston
>Sandisk
Don't buy generics. Buy one that's at least 32gb if you're spending around $10. If it's less than 32gb and $10 or more, then you are getting ripped off.

I found this website rating flash dives.
https://ssd-tester.com/usb_flash_drive_test.php
The scores seem to be consistent with website reviews. Am I better off buying a cheap USB from a local store just for this reset, or am I better off buying a long-term investment (ex.: Kingston DataTraveler Max (USB-A) 256GB for $70)?
The examples you provided were doing poorly in reviews for the most part. Typically they would say
>"This product worked amazingly for a while, then the speed gradually slowed until it became unusable after a year!"
>>

>Am I better off buying a cheap USB from a local store just for this reset, or am I better off buying a long-term investment
Only you can answer that. Is this your first PC? Have you never needed a USB stick before?
I personally have almost 50x USB sticks from 128mb to 512gb. But I also own around 40 PCs.

One of the things that makes me hate Microsoft the most is their tendency to FUCKING RESET SHIT RANDOMLY.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>108270753
registry changes can be overridden randomly by windows updates. if you have a case where you need a tweak like that to persist, you want to use group policy. often there are already policies you can use that do what you want, other times you'll need to create the policy manually.

Been doing this for 12+ years, I don’t know why everyone is paranoid to be up to date every single moment and get fucked by Microsoft resetting uour shit

it's important if you're on a connection that's shared by a lot of people but otherwise you can often get away with it
i still do updates but i have feature upgrades turned off and security updates are on like a 14 day hold so i have time to block them if i hear about problems (or so they don't get deployed if microsoft pulls them)

What happened?
Every Distro I tried while Distrohopping could easily find my 1TB SSD but for some reason W10/W11 can't?
>>
>>108275511
what is the SSD?
might be some unknown brand that Windows doesn't have drivers by default - you simply need to find the driver and upload it during windows partition phase. I think there is a button in partition menu where you can load a driver
>>
>>108275511
If you were distrohopping a lot, there's a chance that your drive is formatted as ext4, which is recommended in Linux but is not supported in Windows. You need to make sure that it is formatted to FAT32 or something else that can work on Windows.

codecs not drivers
ltsc doesn't come with most codecs because it's not meant for it, that's why most people on ltsc are running youtube vp9 on software decoding despite having hardware to do so

Hello. I bought a notebook that got delayed and may arrive today (if they don’t mark as “delivery failed” again even though I’m waiting here all day)
It’s a linux, I read, re-read and watched some videos of Windows installation and activation. But I just feel unsure here. How do I quite trigger this phase? The BIOS UEFI thing?

Is there a reason I should clean install IoT over switching from home to IoT with massgrave? Would something be fucked up as opposed to if I had just clean installed? I have a lot accumulated on this computer, so I'd really prefer to keep all files and settings, so I'd like to just switch, but I don't know if I'm missing something
Also, just to make sure, does it preserve absolutely everything?
>>
>>
>>108278939
if you're on 10 home already then there's not much reason to go for LTSC tbqh since 10 just gets security updates now, the best course of action would be to just activate ESU and upgrade to enterprise.
If you still want LTSC then MAS can't change it, the IoT option is for regular IoT, not LTSC IoT. To jump from home to LTSC you need a registry tweak also found on massgrave's website, which lets you "upgrade" to LTSC. It preserves files and apps, but settings may be reset

I have SMB running on my Arch laptop. On Windows computers, I can successfully provide username and password to access the shared Videos folder. But I haven't been able to access this folder using VLC on the Xbox One. How the heck can I access the goods on the XBONE? Not really a Windows question, let me know if there's a better place to ask.

>>108279081
My reason is that a windows update fucked up my laptop pretty hard and I am sick of their "feature update" bullshit
Though I suppose with the EoL that won't be a problem anymore, but they went out with a swan song, I will say
I'm pretty sure it was the update, so I want to switch, hoping it will fix it, but thank you for the advice, I would have otherwise
Wait, what, isn't it LTSC IoT?
>Upgrade Windows 10 Home, Pro, etc., to Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 (Keep Files & Apps)
I'm following that right now, I thought it was. Though as I understand it, there's not that much difference between the two? So I don't really mind which
But I will keep it in mind
Settings I don't mind, if it's just basic settings
Thank you
>>108279110
I'm 90% sure over time windows updates degraded my laptop in various ways, but the nail in the coffin was when I believe a forced update broke my I2C HID driver, my trackpad and keyboard were working perfectly fine before that
At the time I was using another laptop mostly, so I didn't get the chance to revert the update before it was too late
A friend had a similar thing happen, and later found whilst converting his into Linux that switching it solved it for him apparently
Sorry if this is all retarded, maybe I cannot into computers, I just want to try it and I've had good experiences with IoT with my other devices, though I just installed those when they were fresh, ran into none of the bullshit I was constantly faced with on this one using W10 Home

the least impactful solution for your current case would be to version change to education, which is still considered GAC/consumer sku. this is trivial to do with MAS and microsoft supports that upgrade path. you can use group policy (which education has and home doesn't) to target the version of windows you're currently on so you don't get feature "upgrades" until you actually want them.
the only real limitation is that education doesn't support versions for quite as long as enterprise and especially not as long as enterprise iot, but it still gives you an additional year or two over home and group policy lets you choose when you actually want to deploy the feature upgrade (read: when the previous one is eol).
if you really want to go to iot enterprise (the main reason would be the longer support cycle), i don't think it's THAT much harder but you'd need to follow the steps on MAS. typically if i'm setting up iot enterprise i do it on a fresh install or an upgrade install, not a simple version change. but i think it is doable.

I hadn't heard of this before at all, this is huge information. I doubt I would have ever known if you hadn't told me. Though, do you mean that you can rollback/change to previous versions of windows, then? Because the current version I'm on is too late, the damage has been done, so preservation isn't what I want here, sorry if that's a dumb question, I just want to understand
Less impactful sounds "safer" which I appreciate, so I don't mind trying it out first, and eventually resorting to IoT if it doesn't work out
Thank you for your insight, and for the explanations of each as well, it really helps

>>108279783
i believe you can roll back feature upgrades within 30 days of installing them, you'd need to google for the instructions because i've never done it. after that, microsoft deletes the necessary files off your drive to free up space.
if it's NOT a feature upgrade causing your current problems, you can also uninstall regular updates but you'd need to identify the one causing your issues. there have been a few buggy ones lately, just google whatever your symptoms are february 2026 windows update and look for a specific kb# so you can roll that one back.

well if you indeed didn't erase that partition then you just have to grab the drivers from there

It’s an Acer Nitro V15. Not sure if that matters or helps. During installation I followed a guide that made me select a partition to erase in order to install windows and now this.
I can cope with losing the contents, I can download the drivers from elsewhere. But I really need the space.
It had to be a notebook cause I got robbed a few weeks ago so I needed high potency and some mobility to take it with me while I recover my losses through the months.
So I’m in kind of a huge hurry cause I’ll be working tomorrow afternoon. Any directions to recover that space would be appreciated
>>
>>108280401
hopefully all you need is going to the Acer website to pick the drivers
And my guess is that you erased partitions (or you still have them) and didn't initialize them. Go to Disk Management to see all the partition, you should see all available partitions.
support yourself with some guides about how to erase partitions and extend the C: partition, just be wary not to nuke important partitions like the bootloader
>>
>>108280429
Well hopefully I won’t need to nuke a partition again. Regardless in order should be:
>Disk Management
To see if I can restore the partition and then
>Acer website
For the drivers
I’m puzzled though: these windows drivers mean the creator of the Acer knew people would install the windows over the linux. Was there a way to do without nuking it? Cause I followed the guide from the rentry OP but that part was a slump, no disk was valid to use.

should I take the plunge and update my windows? currently it works pretty much okay, but I'm wondering if I'm missing some optimisations or if it would fix some of the smaller issues I've been having. I havent updated since last summer or so.
>>
>>108280725
if you're on something earlier than 10 or a very old version of 10, upgrade to either 10 edu 22h2 or 10 ltsc iot enterprise 2021 and activate esus via mas, then reevaluate when esu eol gets close
if you're on something earlier than 23h2 11 but not enterprise, upgrade to 23h2 education and set group policy to target version windows 11 23h2 until like october when 23h2 goes eol, then reevaluate how bad the update situation is then, hopefully by then you can go to 24h2.
if you're on something earlier than 24h2 enterprise, update to 24h2 enterpriose iot ltsc
if you're on 24h2, don't upgrade to anything later than it right now. later versions are enablement packages for 24h2 and the things they're enabling seem to be buggy and/or unwanted.

I updated Windows to install most crucial drivers and then manually went afterwards I installed the rest.
But I'm afraid I might have in letting Windows update itself, allowed it to install the stuff that would slow me down, the stuff I went after IoT LTSC specifically to avoid.
Is there any way to chekc this? To guarantee I'll keep my speed, or to know I did everything right?
>>
>>
>>
>>108284385
during the first day or two Windows always feels quite slow because it's still catching up with security updates and indexing and doing all sorts of shit, even on LTSC so don't worry, after that it will only get monthly updates
>>
>>
>>108283456
>>108285980
yeah the new scheduler is only for windows 11. windows 10 stopped getting feature updates a while ago, scheduler and dwm is part of feature update. all windows 10 gets now is security updates.

You guys likely know more than me in thisvut is it true that Microsoft releases stuff that purposefully slows down the PCs as the version progresses? Asking cause I got this notebook that doesn’t have muc stuff but used to be ultra faster. I’m wondering if I should go the 11 Iot LTSC people talk about and if that would help or if I should go back to Windows 10
>>
>>
>>
>>108286131
>is it true that Microsoft releases stuff that purposefully slows down the PCs as the version progresses?
>purposefully
i doubt it's on purpose. it's more that microsoft as a whole has little cohesion, their management is out of touch, their workers are unskilled, and their overall focus is on trying to position copilot as relevant rather than making windows performant and bug-free.
if you aren't sure what you're doing, you're probably better off using group policy to make it so feature upgrades aren't forced on you until you want them (which should be near end of life of the one you're currently on).

keeping it at "high performance" always keeps the cpu clocked up to max which will generate a lot of extra and generally unnecessary heat. that decreases the lifespan of your components and wastes electricity. and in my experience it doesn't really do anything useful because your cpu will just clock up under load anyway.

let's say I want to play Forza Horizon 6 when it comes out on gamepass but I am in LTSC 21H2. What can I do aside from moving to 11 or Linux, since the guide to update to 22h2 (minimum requirement) says not to do it anymore
>UPDATE:
22H2 no longer receives updates so this is no longer recommended or useful.
If you've done this previously, you should undo this to revert back to 21H2 which still gets support.
>>
>>
>>108297753
You get 2021 if you want to stay on 10 until 2032 but stay frozen on the 21H2 feature pack. GAC 10 22H2 with the ESU licenses activated gives you updates until 2028. 2024 is 11 based and lasts until 2035.
>>
>>108297487
It was found out back in October that the LTSC 2021 enablement package that takes it to 22H2 wasn't actually getting updates at all because it was a franken-edition. If you want 22H2 then you need to use normal 10 Enteprise with the ESU activated.

i mean everyone's going to give you a different answer because some people hate win11 and some are fine with it. i think you should keep the oem win11 install to save yourself time and hassle on driver setup but version change it to education using MAS. i'd also recommend configuring windows updates with group policy so they aren't forced on you. but this is all my own personal preference, if you hate 11 you should install 10.

education and enterprise are practically identical, the main difference is education's still a consumer sku which for most practical purposes doesn't matter that much, it mainly affects activation. that and if you want to do ltsc you have to do enterprise.
for 11 versus 10, 11 has some things that 10 doesn't like "gaming mode" and the newer scheduler for intel cpus but it also has more bullshit you need to prune than 10. imo it's a wash, just pick whatever works best for your personal situation. if you don't want to have to worry about eol shit, i think 11 education is the best option.
