how long is it too much? i've been unemployed since june and it feels brutal.
i was working as a """data engineer""" but the job was a meme. it was a WFH where there was nothing to do though the company could mantain my position and i was confortable doing nothing and making money.
now i have no prospects of getting a new job in this bloody AI market. no replies, no interviews, no responses, no nothing.
how can i get a grip?
>>
>>108274417
i'm scared. i'm scared.
>>108274404
how did you get fired? other than applying for jobs what have you been doing since june? make any projects? link up with someone?
>>
>>108274425
well, the company was merge aquired and the new leadership started cutting costs until eventually got to me.
to be honest, i'm stagnating: i plan to take certs and study core skills but i simply don't start. i'm too lazy or too scared of doing something. i know i'm not entitled to a job but i simply freeze when i have to do something. and finally my linkedin is not filled with info, just the positions/companies i worked in. i'm very low profile and so i don't like exposing myself too much.
in the end, i know, i deserve this. i have a problem but i just don't pull myself up to do something.

Im wrapping up my last contract. Job boards are empty. 5 whole ass it jobs in my state on indeed and 1 on dice. 1 fucking it job. I changed up my resume to apply for industrial maintenance and HVAC/electrical shit, but it's going to be pretty hard to pass off how I've had a job this long without any sort of cert. Do I admit (lie) that I've been an unlicensed contractor for the past 10 years?

This shit is so grim. My onsite support job is pure hell in dozens of ways, but the more I hear about the job market and the more I try to get something better, the more I feel like I should be lucky to even have this ass job.
I really need to get an in with the government before Ursula manages to outsource my onsite job to the incoming trade deal jeet flood.

It's kind of like how millennials fantasize about killing their own parents for material gain with the "day of the pillow" meme
The same exact thing will happen to you when the next generation starts coming up behind you.
All those zoomers entering CS know they will be the ones who make it and your resume gap means you'll be the one who eats shit. They aren't waiting for you to recover first.

I just don't want to move...but that might be the play. Especially when they're paying $180k+.

You should be working on a personal project related to your qualifications that you find you have some interest in, doesn't matter much what it is otherwise
And a year out of employment at this job market isn't a big deal

Last week I was doing labeling work for Anthropic through a contractor for $40/hour, and they can outright reject your "tasks" for completely subjective reasons. Of course, if they reject it, you don't get paid, so obviously they have incentive to reject your work.
This is an elaborate scam to get a rotation of developers working for peanuts. There are so many "developers" desperate for any work that they can pull this off.
If you're enough of a sucker to keep getting more than half of your work "rejected" and effectively getting paid $15/hour or less, good for them. If you're not, it doesn't matter, they have enough suckers to do at least 10 "tasks" for them before they figure out the scam.
I was suspicious from the start, but if figured maybe this wasn't a scam because for each "task" you have to make a fully working app from scratch in 5 hours and compare the model's generated code through every prompt, so obviously programming expertise is required. Clearly I was wrong. So if you ever get an "offer" for shit like this don't fall for it.

I'm fucking tired of doing Java jobs. You think I can get jobs as an LLM engineer easily if I have the experience but not the degree (I have a degre but not in data) and if the current company I'm working for is the kind of company that looks nice on a CV?
My boss is also cool so if they call him, he'll bullshit as much as I want him to.

Graduated ~6mo ago with PhD. Have elicited effectively zero interest in anyone. Got 1 interview early on but rejected a couple days later despite being a good candidate on paper (social skills my biggest weakness by far). Other than that only had an interview for temp position at early stage startup and the pos ghosted me after offering job and an interview with a furniture store I wasn’t good enough to work in. Trying and failing not to get caught up in all the places my experience might appear weak. Naturally been rough on the self-esteem and general outlook. Caved and applied to a couple postdocs (maybe 5). Get offer from lab at big name school after thorough vetting process. Get offer at ivy league school under huge name researcher I’ve been aware for years now. They even fly me out to meet the lab and seem interested in my work. Want me to be the ML expert for the lab. I’m sorry for you guys (and myself, god I’m so ready for a real job and not more of this pretending I’m a student to justify not paying me much bullshit), there’s something so fucked with the job market right now, especially tech and it’s all the worse for you 20ish year olds. Talked to someone with multiple years at google who’s struggling to get a job. As far as I’m concern this postdoc position is way more competitive in a reasonable timeline than any of the 100s of job apps I haven’t heard back from. Good luck. This shit is more than you being bad candidates

showed up 5 min lates to an interview, it all went smooth but after like 40 min at the end they just started to unironically berate me face to face for being late all of a sudden
anyone else gotten genuinely humiliated in an interview before?
>>
>>
>>108287974
No, but, if I was going to be late, I'd try to reschedule at least 30 mins before with an excuse. No reschedule, I'm probably not getting that job, so why show up. Just tell them I'm not going to make it at that point.

I went apeshit and starting phoning a company that's been advertising a job for months that I would be perfect for. I got an interview right away, but then it didn't happen (arguably my fault). The HR person for that job was a man, and he has been completely unable to reply to my follow-up emails or anything. He's hopeless.
>>108287974
What I just wrote above is literally this. I was expecting an email with a link to the online meeting, but I didn't realise the link was in the previous email, so I spent five minutes waiting and the interviewer had given up on me by then. He has emailed me a couple of times since, so he didn't ghost me, but he can't arrange a new interview to save his life. He's hopeless. Or maybe he's just toying with me to humiliate me.
>>
>>108288366
I wasn't clear and actually meant other non-tech corpo jobs like account executive or something like that.
I was just checking out some people on Linkedin and found a few with fancy titles and it looked like they had comfy jobs.

I actually asked a friend how she got her job recently, because she was helping me because I'm convinced I'm doing it wrong. She asked what sort of wage I wanted, and I said £40,000, because that's pretty much the very maximum I can get and it's very slightly more than I was getting at my old job. Based on what I've read here, £40,000 in Bongistan is probably about $150,000 in American job money. Now, this friend is a nice person and she's helpful and stuff, but she doesn't radiate incredible genius or anything, and she was shocked at £40,000. In her words, "I wouldn't get out of bed for less than £70,000".
By the way, "account executive" as a job title is just a bullshit sales job. Same as account manager, sales executive, and so on. They make up their own job titles and they pick fancy-sounding ones so they can impress the people they're trying to sell to. My old job had someone who was "account director", which we weren't happy about because legally, in the UK, if you are a "director" in a limited company then that means something very specific, and she is not a director. Her boss was the Head of Sales, which is the opposite of how it's meant to go with that job title. I think it might even be illegal for her job title to say "director" when she isn't one. But she was allowed to keep it because apparently it impresses people. It's all bullshit.
>>
>>108288500
I would take the job. You say you graduated in November 2024; I got my psychology degree in 2008 and was still getting minimum wage selling printer toner in 2014. And if it's minimum wage, fuck 'em, you can just quit if you don't like driving there every day. The only reason you're scared is because everyone always is. There's nothing actually scary about this job, so stop being a faggot bitch.
>>
>>
>>108288521
Keep interviewing for what? I have a compsci degree but i genuinely hate coding and i never took it seriously. I do have manual tester experience but so far applying for QA jobs has GIVEN ME NOTHING. just take home tests after take home test. Interviews once every 50 jobs. Im sick of applying and interviewing. Im sick of unable to tell myself "buddy you got a job now, you got money, nobody shit on you for being unemployed, do what you want on weekends". Im just scared if i got laid off from this job i would get unemployed for months again because all i care about is studying japanese and drawing.
>>108288553
It's 4 hours on train + motorbike. Two hour trips each. Clocking out at 22.00 means i get home at 00.00. Wake up at 5 for prayer. Exercise, showers, and eat, take my little sister to school ends at 8. At 8 to 11 i have like 3 hours of free time. I'll be fuming beyond belief if only spent this time for applying and interviewing agan.
>>108288588
The job pays $333
Cheapest Rent that isnt a total mudhut is 133.
Cheapest decent Meal costs like $1,3, so if i eat 3 times a day that would be $1,3 x 3 x 30 = 117-120.
I have $80 left.
My monthly internet bills costs $15.
Health insurance costs $15.
Gasoline each month costs $15.
Electric bills is like $15 a month
Utilities and shit will cost like at least $20
Poof. Gone. To atoms. No money left at all for entertainment, treat myself, hangouts. If i dont have any money left because of this job at least dont pressure me to do a side gig or upskill myself for my next job. I want to feel okay doing whatever i want. Instead of feeling "ohh you're so fucked, skill issue. Thats what you get for pigeonholing yourself
>>
>>
>>108288669
I was assuming the alternative to accepting the offer was to keep interviewing for whatever. I don't know what you're interviewing for.
If you don't want to interview more, nobody is holding a gun to your head anon. Just take the job and get on with your life.
Nobody here has a magic button to make money to live off of here, and, if they did, they sure as hell wouldn't share it.
It sucks, but everything, not just tech, seems to be going downhill right now unless you are already massively wealthy.

no I was a SWE. every other third party API requires you to generate and keep current security certificates that ensure you're the one using their endpoints. and for some reason they all expire after 1/2 years and stick you on the renewal.

One of the first rules of IT support is to always estimate the maximum amount of time, because customers will be happy if you finish before then but they'll be furious if you take longer than you estimate. Also, when I got called to do out-of-hours work at my old job, my boss would always tell me to clean these fuckers out and take as much money as I could from our incompetent shiftless owners. So that's at least two reasons why you should have said three hours. Certificates sometimes take a long time to arrive, remember. Especially if you bought them from Enom like we always did.

The crappiest company outsourcing for Japan I applied for as a last-resort ticket in my shithole country just rejected me once I disclosed to them I had no degree. I thought they were supposed to give me another chance given that they scheduled on another call, thinking in retrospect is to realize it's just bureaucracy. Now I have to keep searching for jobs but this can only get harder. I'm 25 now and I live in a judgy rural bumpkin countryside that already spread whispers about how I still stay home for a year. Perhaps I should just go to the city and find any job at all to get away from this place. That's not the worst part, I have applied for so many companies already, many of them rejected or ghosted me and those that did were just hard to pass the tests or interviews. How do I cope with this?
>>
So I found a job listing that seems perfect for me. I'm going to save up with my part time job to get my next cert, spend a few weeks studying the subjects on the listing, blog some more about relevant homelab projects, and tailor my resume. I figure there's a good chance I won't get it, but I'll be better prepared for a similar role.

I remember when i was still working on a company, i would receive 1-4 job offers messaged to me on linkedin. 2 of them always turns out to be fake or remote hell. There are also remote hell, you know? Thats when i was updating my LinkedIn during internship. When i stopped working there, the job offers never came again.

There used to be some data annotation gigs that paid $15-20/h for my locale which was high, especially compared to the local CoL. Now the most generous paying remote model assessing job I can find is $9/h. Foreign companies must have learned how to set the apt prices for poor countries.

It's a very generic job title so it will depend a lot on the company. I would expect you to be putting servers and switches and firewalls into server racks, plugging in all the cables between each of them, and configuring the ports on the switches so everything works. Like all jobs, there will be lengthy instructions saying, "Type INT gi0/1/1 then type NO SHUTDOWN" that anybody on the planet could follow, but you would probably still need a load of qualifications that you only need so you can prove you're not a gigaretard.
If it's not that, you'll probably be digging up roads and splicing fibre-optic cable for broadband providers.

My last "network engineering" job was repetitive data collection on hundreds of sites using CDP neighbor. On day 2 i started trying to automate it and by day 14 it was doing my job and i basically did nothing for 2 years straight

fuck you. I'm a liar. I don't have any experience. I told you I had 10 years but actually I don't have any. No I've never done any of this before. I've never seen any of this technology that you're asking me about. no I can't do it. thank you for your time jackass. I'll do this until I'm dead and then I'll kill myself. I'm the stupidest piece of shit you've ever had to waste your time on

>don't you have a job
this is the unemployed general
>>

The pro's of getting fired:
>Wasn't happy at old job. Offered little/no upward mobility, was in-office 5 days a week with a shitty commute, didn't like my coworkers, etc. Now I have all the time I could ever want to seek out better opportunities.

I joined the Air Force. My AFSC gave me top secret and my first unit upgraded that to TS/SCI, and then I just barely got screwed out of getting a CI poly, which I am still upset about.
I recommend the Guard/Reserve to pretty much anyone who isn't making high six-figures, and active duty to anyone who is going nowhere in life (which is basically everyone in this job market).

just like everything else in technology, you need to already have it in order to get it. you need to have a job get one for you. you need to find a job which will hire you and will give you one which requires it and requires you to have one so that you can get it.
>>
you cannot get a job as a data engineer if you are not a data engineer. you need to have 8 years of experience doing data engineering as a data engineer in order to get a data engineer job. if you are not a data engineer, you can kill yourself with a shotgun in the mouth.

if you're trying to find a job and you don't have a job, you are so absolutely fucked it's unreal. try talking to a company and tell them that you're unemployed. they will end the interview immediately. why would they want to talk to someone without a job? after all, there's probably a reason that they don't have a job. why take a risk?
I'm sorry but you are going to die.

if you have senior level experience, you might be completely washed out of the tech industry forever. why would a senior level person be unemployed? there must be something wrong with them, and so there must be something wrong with you, and so there's no way in fuck you're going to get another job. did you become the CTO at your previous role? why didn't you become the CTO? you're too old now. you can't work. you're overqualified for mid-level positions, and you never became the CTO. so what the fuck are you?

Bro, you won't make a job out of this. Can't you take a good look at your life and pick something productive instead of falling for escapism? You seem to be a good guy that cares about his family, don't waste your life with pointless shit.

No nigga i fucking hate my family.
>escapism
My escapism for the longest time is always porn and scrolling. Picking up japanese just for 5 days somehow shuts my brain. I feel at ease. Regardless I'm still applying to 20 QA jobs per week to no avail. Still studying that QA course. Now i have 2 hours before having to leave for my data annotator training.
Dont say anything about pointless shit when you save cat memes on your device. I dont care about tech at all. Spent 5 years on compsci understanding fucking nothing. Not even gamedev. I just want to make minimum wage enough for rent then spend weekends doing whatever i want not le upskill or le saas project
