Imagine if Android was the first OS that used Linux and people just called it Linux, praising just Linus Torvalds and never acknowledging the project that made the rest of the OS, even though the whole OS was created before Linux was even a thought in Torvald's head.

Yes this is what happened to the GNU operating system. And not only that, they simultaneously stripped away any mention of user freedom and replaced everything with "open-source" and pushover licenses.
