Notch Nook is a third party app that can be turned off.
The notch itself is where the camera is placed. It increases available space on the top display's bezel.

Reminds me of that old Windows ricing software.
Can't remember the name of it anymore. People used to put all sorts of shit like CPU stats, music overlays and shit on their desktops.
