Unless you mean that you're paying a team of programmers to do it, that's rarely the case.
Most proprietary softwares have bugs that are never fixed, because you're not even the actual client.

Voluntary communism can be based. I grew up in a very rural village where everyone just shared everything despite some people clearly being making more than others. The more people the more impossible it is to feel like family.

People like being able to solve their own problems. If my TV, computer or any other product breaks I can pop them open and attempt to fix them. When my software breaks I am just fucked if it is proprietary. Unless I want to use something like Ghildra to reverse engineer it for months just to get to the starting line. Also because of provided free quality software. Microsoft nickeled and dimed everyone with no option for startups who didn't have cash flow. So people who wanted to start a business, but didn't have investors were just SOL until it came along. Then when those companies became big they reinvested in the technology that made them successful making Linux the best operating system for servers. Once it was the best it just kept snowballing.
