I hate data hoarders so much it's unreal

Data hoarding will continue until the situation improves (lol).

Data hoarding is a like a bank rush, people only do it because they're afraid the place hosting the files won't be there much longer. Its partially self fulfilling, but is usually also the only winning move for any person who may want those files in the future.
>>
>>
The hoarders are right. I haven't contributed to myrient's current hammering but I can assure you that's only because I obtained the sets I wanted years ago already from GGn, Ugg (RIP), Blackcats (RIP) and other sources that distribute large files the way they are supposed to be - via torrents.
Sites come and go. The data is the only thing that matters. RIP mininova.

myrient never cared about preservation
anna's archive distributes everything by torrents and splits the torrents up so people can download as many as they want as possible and also before that made sure there are hoarders with full copies out there and also backed up other libraries they same way
Besides the issue isn't hoarders. It's the massive influx of new users people who never even knew it ever existed now flooding it to try to download shit
90% of its issues could be sold by sectioning off a top 50 games from each console or some shit to let them go rape that server

You mean these chumps host pirated games on fucking ftp servers? Like it's the fucking 90s before torrents were a thing? Lmaoooo. Tech illiterate retard zoomers deserve every ounce of suffering they bring upon themselves.

tangentially related i've noticed that a lot of people seem to dismiss bandwidth costs as negligible for some reason. like the prevailing thought seems to be that it used to be a problem but isn't anymore, just based on vibes i suppose.

Remind me of "the Japanese Game Preservation Society"
They took donations in money and games, and used the money to store all the donated games in a building in a bunch of boxes. Journalists and academics could contact them to request access to the building to look at the games. The rest of the public could look at the game list online, and an occasional newsletter about recent donations. Then they ran out of money, and are begging for funds so they can pay the rent.

All he had to do was offer torrents. In fact only offer torrents using magnet links on the main site. I doubt those old roms are being updated that often. Then he can just have the entire collection on his seedbox and rate limit clients to protect his costs and encourage seeding.

leeching torrents is a prisoner's dilemma
if everyone leeches then nobody gets to download since nobody bothers to download at close to dial-up speeds
so the parties that aren't invested enough to play their pointless full library of games will just leave

Myrient were very driven by a personal desire for giving everyone the optimal, premium experience of being able to download freely and easily but this was always going to be abused.
What SHOULD have happened was the most popular and mass downloaded files got distributed as torrents and then the less popular and niche stuff (magazine scans, promo videos, beta editions, random leaks etc) would be served as direct downloads.
The popular stuff would probably get seeded at least enough to offset the worst of the server costs, while the niche stuff wouldn't cost much to host at all. Doing that system or something like it would have saved the site very easily in the long run, to say nothing of giving small incentives to host/seed to other likeminded individuals.
I do find it strange that their costs were so high though, even at the current inflated prices for hardware actually outright buying that much storage and paying for bandwidth should be as expensive as that right? I'm no expert so I could be wrong.

all information will one day be placed within the confines of openai and scam altman will collect a token everytime you need to get something done. everyone thinks this is about building a machine god or automating jobs, but the only goal is to leech from everything. its credit card fees but for thinking.

this, piracy was resolved years ago with torrenting, there is no reason for a retard to hoard all the files. This time was because of poor logistic, but could have been a tantrum, forced to fight in ukraine, dead by ligma, corporate takedown, etc, that would have caused the site to go down.

The only people that put effort into organization and availability of their torrents are private trackers and they make it their mission in life to prevent anyone outside of their cult to get the files.
Sharing is dead.

you don't want 1000 poos leeching, just look at what happend to myrient, total unregulated abuse. Gated communities, limited rates, n downloads per session, and many others rules are not for being assholes, but to be reasonable.
>>
>>108303671
Ok?
This has nothing to do with private trackers being so hostile to newcomers though.
Force people to seed or you ban them, but make it possible to join, these are not mutually exclusive.
The truth is that private trackers tards are a bunch of power tripping losers.

You either have an offline LAN and a brain or you don't. You don't. Consider this, this is all basically stolen from the people who made it who got less money because of that and you are trying to moralise about how you steal it? Don't get me wrong dispite having worked on popular software that was widely pirated IDGAF anymore but the hypocrisy is a bit glaring.

Soon you won't be allowed to use any compute and I will be sitting in my bunker playing games, listening to music, watching movies OFFLINE, while you'll be begging for a morsel of new bits and bytes.
Take and seed whatever you can, as long as you can.

No, but they can just wait until you die and the house clearance firm throws all your hard drives in the trash. Zoomers don't know what torrents are and wouldn't care about game "preservation" even if they did. It's pretty much inevitable that when today's 40 year olds begin dying off, things will start being lost forever. Hell, that's already happening. Once you get past the 6th gen of consoles and into the era of digital games, title updates and DLC, the amount of stuff that's been preserved drastically goes down. Tons of stuff from Xbox Live and Playstation Network is already unavailable and unarchived, leaving only the slim hope it'll be found by chance on some old hard drive one day.

it can be a tricky concept to grasp by poverty-stricken thirdies. they were taught to fight tooth and nail for scraps, and to keep their fellow man down, just to be sure he doesn't pose threat.

All he had to do is:
>pause the website
>make torrents of all his contents
>start super-seeding (to minimize his upload bandwidth and let the downloaders do the uploading)
>put the torrents on the website
>let people download and seed
That's it, and his whole archive would be hoarded by everyone very easily.

Ah, a typical brownoid displaying the typical brownoid mentality that everything can burn for all they care if it's not directly benefitting them. No desire to leave a better world for their children and their childrens' children. Just a selfish, gibsmedat attitude and desire for short-term gain at the expense of all else. Calling you an NPC would be compliment. At least those can be programmed with some sort of worthwhile function.

You can be the richest man on Earth and still not have enough hard drive space. Nobody can hoard absolutely everything, you have to pick and choose what you want. Why waste a terabyte on every regional Barbie Horse Adventure version when that space is better put to use storing anything else?
