Various Ofuda charms and talismans are a major source of income for the Kanamara shrines. Tanabata is celebrated in a special festival in the valley where Kanamara-sama is worshipped and associated shrines. The copulation of Hikoboshi and Orihime is celebrated by opening the festival with a special kagura in which the Kanamara Miko dance lewdly before the men of the town. One man is chosen by lot to play Hikoboshi and one shrine slut (the Awabihime Miko at the main shrine) plays the role of Orihime. He will begin to have his way with "Orihime" at the climax of her dance. "Hikoboshi" will be allowed to ravage "Orihime" on the stage as he wishes for the duration of the festival.
The other Miko will pass out colorful condoms and mingle with the other men. These "handmaidens of Orihime" are given branches to which they must tie used condoms to create sacred gohei wands. The slut who completes the most wands earns a cash reward which is given to her family. After the counting, the condoms full of seed are tied to sacred bamboo branches on the shrine grounds. Legends day the man whose seed is placed highest on a bamboo stalk will have all his desires fulfilled by the gods.

At the closing of the festival, the "lovers" are torn apart as per mythology. The Milky Way dividing them is played by the present males and Kanamara Miko in the kagura's final act. Before the rite, several Miko are given a secret medicine to induce lactation (a modern addition to the rite not reported before the 19th century), so that they are appropriately "Milky." The Miko drag "Hikoboshi" toward the back of the stage where he will disappear into writhing, soft flesh as all the Miko make love to him to distract him from "Orihime." As for the whore playing "Orihime," her body is dragged off the kagura stage by the men in the audience. "Orihime," is then gangbanged by the crowd within sight of her "lover." This NTR element seems to be local flavor and is not present in the original myth.

In the Middle Ages, the Kanamara shrine sought to expand its influence to nearby towns and villages. This was done through missionary Miko called Aruki Miko. These women were extra daughters of Kanamara worshipping families sold to the shrine. They were branded or tattooed with the shrines crest to mark them as Miko, dressed in the typical short hakama and sent out to preach the Kanamara faith to the masses. They were given copies of the relatively pornographic Chinpoki scriptures, a walking stick, kasa hat, a cup, and a phallic talisman to represent the kami. Yet, they were given no money for this pilgrimage and were expected to earn their food and lodging by selling their bodies. These Aruki Miko, more akin to wandering prostitutes, would arrive in a village and preach the benefits of their faith, dance lewd kagura, and service the local men. If the village decided to accept Kanamara-sama he would be enshrined with the present Aruki Miko as his first priestess(es).
Many rejected these pilgrim Shrine Sluts. Other Aruki Miko were unsuccessful for other reasons. A Miko might be taken by bandits on the road, raped, and turned into a sex slave or persecuted by authorities and imprisoned. Even so, some such Miko are reported to have converted their captors with their sexual charms. The bandits or guards who raped them often coming to venerate Kanamara-sama as a fullfiller of desires, remover of obstacles, and protector of pillage.

Many of the Aruki Miko are still revered as Saintesses of the Kanamara Faith. The Shrine has funded and filmed AV starring the present Shrine Sluts based on several of their lives. They are presently funding an H Anime to increase interest in their religion.

Of these Aruki Miko, one was especially successful and converted a nearby town whose shrine and temple were dedicated to the astral Onmyo deities. The town was beset by calamity: floods, earthquakes, poor harvests, etc. The Miko first won influence with the priests, elders, and local Lord with her body. Then convinced the chief priest she could ward away the disasters. She told him that Yin energy had become too powerful in the area, but that she could purify it if the source was stopped with a secret ritual.
She asked the Lord and priests that all women who were fertile in the town's area be brought to the shrine grounds on the next Day of Gold (Friday). ALL the men were also to gather, including the Lord and his soldiers. It was agreed her orders were to be followed to attempt to save the town.
By the appointed day, the main shrine grounds were walled off as a ritual space and Kanamara Daimyojin was enshrined as the main deity. It was then that the Miko revealed to all what she had told the priests and Lord. The Yin had to be exorcised by purifying the women (wellsprings of Yin) with Yang (i.e. semen). The ritual was a great orgy with intermittent feasting and rest to please the gods: A Kanamara Festival of Rape.
