Can we all agree that religion killed this nation? There is nothing different between a Croat, a Bosnian, a Montenegrin, and a Serb except for the religion associated with their region. Their history is very closely linked, and their "languages" are only different in name. They are much more culturally and linguistically similar than the Italian states were shortly after unification. It's a darn shame they ended up killing their blood brothers and, more horribly enough, tried to ethnically cleanse each other over something so incredibly petty.

If the communists were serious about achieving a stateless future with no class differences they shouldn’t have divvied up the land based on religion or ethnicities but by random squares like we did in the USA when making states.
So instead of Catholic Croatia vs orthodoxy in Serbia and Islam in Kosovo- the red alternative would be just random squares every few miles like in pic related. Wyoming and Colorado are good examples. Then you wouldn’t have as much infighting today.

Croats and Slovenes do not want to share an economy and living space with e.g. Serbia and Kosovo because it's psychologically humiliating. Yugoslavia was kinda like the North-South Italy divide, except it was politically feasible for the richer parts of the union to secede, and there was residue simmering resentment from WW2

Only by a slight margin. Plus, it's a very shallow reason to give up continental relevance just to become a powerless EU state to Germany.

Except their dialects don't exist anymore, or not like they used to. It's as if Yorkshire would leave the union because the Mancunian accent was too unbearable. The only real thing that truly separates a Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian is religion. Saying you are an orthodox Croatian to any Yugoslav man is silly because that makes entirely no sense to them. In their eyes, you'd just be a Serb.

Picrel is a typical post by a Croatian right-winger. These people aspire to be "civilized" like Germans and hate Serbs because Serbs have a Balkan/Turkish/primitive vibe. They do not want to share a state or a national identity with Serbs because they find it humiliating.
>>
>>18363001
The role that Germany (or the Germanic race in general) plays in the South Slavic psyche truly cannot be overstated.
In Croatia for instance, both rightists and leftists are obsessed with Germany and want to emulate it. The right wing because of Germanic "high culture" and the left wing because of German liberalism and this perception that Germany got rid of its trashy nationalists.
Curiously enough leftists will often mock the Right's aspirations towards cultural Germanity out of spite, insisting Croatia is a primitive Balkan nation. Yet at the same time the Left also want to be Germans. There are in fact many self-loathing idioms in the Croatian vernacular that express this inherent racial inferiority complex, the psychological state of not-being-German.

>Their history is very closely linked
As neighbours, sure, but all neighbours are closely linked historically. You need more than that if you are to unify two or more ethnicities, even if they are so closely related that they should perhaps be called subethnicities. All-Catholic Czechoslovakia atleast had Greater Moravia in the early middle ages as a precedent, but by the 20th century they had grown apart too much, under German and Hungarian influence, to become one people again.
Yugoslavia, however, had no precedent whatsoever, atleast not one that included both Serbs and Croats. With or without the same religion it wasn't going to work and only happened in the first place because of the Italian threat. When the borders had been settled after WW1 major cracks immediately started to show.
Montenegro did have a precedent though as a statelet that had existed since the 17th century which was obviously enough for them to form their own identity, enabling their independence in 2006 after the Serbian rump state had become a pariah, and of course they didn't even have their own religion.
Only the Bosniak identity really did not go much deeper than religion, which shouldn't be surprising given they were literally only known as Muslims before WW2.
People underestimate way too much how much different historical paths undermines ethnic commonalities.

>their "languages" are only different in name.
To my understanding, this is partly because all four use a standard language based on Shtokavian; if the Croatian standard was based on Chakavian or Kajkavian, which are also spoken in Croatia, the difference would be more noticeable. (That said, it's true that Shtokavian is widely spoken natively in all four.)

The Kingdom of Bosnia and Stefan Dusan's Empire are some examples of a "shared precedent".Croatians, Serbs, and Bosniaks have all been under Ottoman or Habsburg rule, with counties shifting continuously between both giants. Still, a lack of a single medieval mega-state didn’t prevent nation-building elsewhere. Italy and Germany are both good examples that unified after centuries of fragmentation and deep regional identities.

Nobody can know for sure. Nationalism already became mainstream in Croatia in the late 80s as an alternative identity to the dying communism but also if the Serbian government was less incendiary the break-up would've been avoided or at least more managed

Yugoslavia was formed in 1918 by Entente Rothschilds and Zionists capitalizing on the falling debris of the AustroHungarian Empire, with the bait of panslavism and stuff like that. Much like Czechoslovakia.
It has no depth, no roots, no history no nothing. Except a geopolitical, economical and cultural point perhaps.
It was an artificial constuct that couldn't just erase obliterate the factual narrative, the millenia that Croatia and Serbia historically existed in one way or the other, nor make croats or serbs forget their history and identity in favor of this new zionist creation disguised as Yugo-panslavism.
Slovenia, Bosnia, Kosovo, N.Mac and Montenegro are indeed unhistorical memes though.

Seems like the biggest problem with Yugoslavia is that it was an ideology based on 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' and once the enemy was gone they turned on each other. The Serb ruling class wanted some revived Serbian Empire. Everyone else wanted a multi-lingual union similar to Switzerland.

Religion is just used as identity the same way Ireland is divided between Caths and prots. It doesn’t matter if the average person in Zagreb doesn’t know who the Patriarch of Moscow is. Catholicism is part of the Croatian identity to align with Italy and Europe while Orthodoxy is part of Serb identity to align with Russia.

It's not about religion but about vibes and geopolitical power relations. Saying that Croats hate Serbs because of Orthodoxy and that Serbs hate Croats because of Catholicism is like saying Anglos hate Indians because of Hinduism and Indians hate Anglos because of Christianity
>>

English people hate Indians mostly because they are brown. Anglo-Indian conflict is mostly colonial, not religious. Anglos hate Paki's, for example, because they are muslim because hating muslims is part of European identity (also because they are brown). It's a very big stretch to compare with South Slavs.
>>
>>18364834
>English people hate Indians mostly because they are brown.
Do you think Croats hate Serbs because they're Orthodox? I can tell you're not from ex-Yugoslavia.
Why do you think Croats are fine with Ukrainian immigrants and mostly support Ukraine even though Ukrainians are Orthodox?
>Anglo-Indian conflict is mostly colonial, not religious.
Yes, and Croat-Serb conflict is also geopolitical in nature. Go read the writings of 19th century Croat and Serb nationalists like Starčević and Garašanin, even back then they framed it all in terms of geopolitics and culture.

>Yugos be like "It's not just religion"
Meanwhile the Slovaks who went there literally a mere 20 years before the start of Nationalism among would-be Slovaks formed two distinct nationalities in Vojvodina.
And guess based on what? The Greek Orthodox became "Russians" - Rusi, the Protestants became "Slavs" - Slovaci. Why yes, one of these even use fucking cyrillic... it's well beyond a fucking parody.
Utterly unhinged from the perspective of the people in Czechoslovakia or the modern states.
For fuck's sake, you could send English colonists there and find Anglican "English" fighting Catholic "Irish" and Evangelical "Americans" or someshit in a generation or two. Despite all being extracted from neighbouring blocks of Victorian London and speaking English to each other.

It's an example of a foreign ethnicity, exposed to the local environment and ideas, produced the exact same absurd divisions as the Negro-Bosno-Serbo-Cretins.
Identical language, geographic origin and history were all completely ignored.
They picked up the religion and built their ethnicity around their religion and solely their religion.
Just like their hosts had done and continue to do so.

Religion is sometimes used as unifying force to expand territory. Greeks consider any orthodox Albanian as Greek. That’s why their numbers in Albania are so inflated by Greek sources. This also goes for Çam in Greece that are all considered Greek because they are orthodox. The Muslim Çam were all exiled to Albania. In fact most Albanians don’t even know that there are Orthodox Çam.

I'm friends with many a post-yugoslav and my ultimate takeaway is that marxism functioned as the religion to unify them all, but was sadly ripped from their hands after their Godhead Tito died and no one strong enough to stand up to the Three-Headed ZioBeast. I think the true cause of Yugoslavia's destruction was their failure to secure nuclear arms, it also would have ideologically strengthened them, as seen in France. If Milosevic had nukes the world would be a much better place

But they didn't. Croats built their ethnicity around sucking up to Germans while Serbs built their ethnicity about being a permaraped rape victim who has been raped by "the West"

While I think the break up of Yugoslavia is dumb it’s kind of funny seeing Anglo countries of all people getting up in arms about it.
As if America/Canada, Australia/New Zealand, north/south Ireland, etc aren't almost entirely culturally/linguistically identical (arguably more so than Yugoslavia). In the end of the day national identities aren't based off of what “makes sense” but on history.

No religion didnt kill the region. Serbia is a nation thats only purpose is to kill the sultan - see Milos Obilic. Croatia is a nation that has no purpose and tries to define itself by showing how they're not like Serbs. Neither group is working towards their puprose and are therefore dysfunctional and once they achieve their goal they will be obsolete.
Everyone in this thread is either too white or too brown to understand.

true but the different identites were fundementally founded on religious differences since hundreds of years ago.
Religion was the greater divide, and then other divides such as dilect and nationality added to the list, but religion was the inception.

>The Kingdom of Bosnia and Stefan Dusan's Empire
Largely irrelevant for non-Bosnians and non-Serbs respectively, neither was anywhere near to being a proto-Yugoslavia.
>Ottomans
The fight against the Ottoman yoke is basically the only major shared experience they have between the ancient migration and the formation of Yugoslavia, but it ended already in the 18th century for the Croats while it carried on for the Serbs all the way until the Balkan Wars. The latter might honestly have been better off going for a union with the Bulgarians instead, though obviously that would have required a language standard based on an eastern dialect..
>Habsburgs
If Austria had managed to conquer Serbia Croats and Serbs could have formed a cohesive block within the empire, but they didn't. Instead Serbia got its own state that the Serbs in the empire wanted to join while the Croats only wanted greater autonomy under the Habsburgs.
>Italy and Germany
The Germans always had the HRE, which was never as meaningless as Voltaire would have you believe. Note that German nationalism failed to take root among the Dutch and the Swiss, i.e. the Germans who had left the HRE several centuries before its dissolution.
Italy is a bit weird to me though, or atleast Sicily(and Naples) is as I feel like such a large, distinct, and completely separate kingdom should have formed its own national identity. Whatever happened happened early though as it was during the Rennaisance that all of Italy got a common literary standard, the Tuscan dialect. Serbo-Croatian didn't get one until the 19th century, and even then they used different scripts, preventing the free flow of literature between them.
>>
>>

Kind of but not really, what are now Serbs and Croats is a product of 19th century nation state building that incorporated multiple ethnicities in them. Western Serbia for serbs and Slavonia for Croats were always inhanitet by people that considered themselves serbs or croats, but it's highly questionable what people considered themselves in the restof the country trough hidtory
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>18362783
In my understanding, the later conflicts were just continuations of the conflict when they first unified. The problem when they unified into Yugoslavia is that Croatia had an Austro-Hungarian background (with more wealth and Western education and ideas), whereas Serbia had a more Eastern background and had already been independent for a century. Because they had diverged for such a long time, there were important cultural differences (religion and language, especially) and it was impossible to pretend all parts of Yugoslavia were the same. The fact that the Serbian king decided on a unitary, centralized state based on the Serbian monarchy inflamed the Croatians (who felt entitled to better representation), and tensions were ignited even until the present day.

>religion
Literally no one cares about religion and it didn't matter in the wars.
>history
Some parts were 500 years under a Muslim empire and others were 0, the difference is obvious even today. Even before the Ottomans Serbia was mingling with Bulgaria, Greeks and the Byzantine-Orthodox world more. Besides Ottoman era Serbian, Vlach and Herzegovinan immigrants in some parts of Croatia the two nations had no history prior to the 20. century.
>language
"Serbo-Croatian" is an artifical creation made for the sole purpose of creating Yugoslavia. The traditional languages and dialects had been diverging for centuries. Even today Croats won't understand each other within Croatia if they speak their regional dialects instead of the standard, and that's only within Croatia.

How is this relevant to anything?
Croatian literature is older and more advanced than Finnish or Dutch literature. Is this supposed to mean that the Netherlands is culturally closer to Serbia than Germany?
Why is it relevant what a handful of educated elites were doing centuries ago when Croats and Serbs have the same language, listen to the same music, have the same general cultural points of reference, etc?
Literally the only difference is (geo)political, in that Croats want to be fully integrated with whatever Western Europe is doing at a given moment while Serbs are into petty imperialism against their neighbors. That's the only difference that matters and is at the core of everything.

Croatian far right, neonazis and such base their political belief on Ante Pavelić, a Bosnian man that loved islam and it's culture and hated Serbs for some reason (even though Serbs are culturally borderline islamic gypsies). The fact that Croatia is now flooded with nationalistic Bosnian Catholics from the shitholes of the Ottoman empire that behave like Serbs, dance with Serbs, talk like Serbs, have the same names like Serbs, consume Serbian culutral outputs but really really really want to make you believe they hate Serbs is actually so hilarious and sad. Mind you this only happened in the last century, before that they were contained within the military frontier and Bosnia but now they squat in all major Croatian towns. It's like negro culture in the US and negros claiming they were oppressed while they are literally everywhere and you can't escape their obnoxious negro music and rituals.

Both Croatia and Slovenia are culturally void (the exception is Dubrovnik, which was, incidentally, a massive Pan-Slavic hub and a center of Slavic learning after the traditional centers of Slavic civilization, Serbia and Bulgaria, were Ottoman'd), and were never culturally superior to the Serbs. The fact of the matter is that the Unipolar West (meaning, us Americans and our doggies) destroyed Yugoslavia because Yugoslavia repeatedly refused to join NATO and the West, and we didn't want to leave the only OTHER* global power standing in the aftermath of the Cold War. The problem is, Germany prevented Yugoslavia's accession to the EEC in late 1990 and triggered the Yugoslav Wars, and repeatedly prevented the implementation of all peaceful resolutions of these wars. I mean, we did install Milosevic to internally destabilize Yugoslavia and make it evident to Ante Markovic that he has to steer the government towards the West, even if it means accepting the confederalization of Yugoslavia (read: we get to lobby within the federated republics with even greater effect to cripple Yugoslavia's foreign policy and gain access to their resources and industry, steering them even more to NATO). With Yugoslavia destroyed and the Soviet Union and China surrendering to us like little hussies, the entire planet, even the NAM countries, became USA property. The problem is, we overextended in the 1990s, and we kept doing so, and now, we're risking it all with Iran and Israel.
This shit wouldn't have happened if Yugoslavia were still around, and paradoxically, a people so aggressive and choleric within their own borders have had a globally stabilizing effect, especially in the Third World. TLDR: Germany killed Europe and the West.

That's just Croats and Slovenes after Matica Hrvatska was created (before that, Croats were giga Pan-Slavists and opposed to Germans).

That's not true at all. The Slovaks were so Germanized, they would have basically never left the Austrian Empire, if not for outside intervention. Half of them already assimilated into Austrians long ago.
Then there are the Croats. They were culturally Germanized and thus became more Western. They are the most Western of the Balkan people, besides the Slovaks. They became influenced by German Pan-Nationalism and wanted to try it in their own country. They actually believed in the lofty idea of having a unified nation-state, they thought the Kingdom of Serbia might be their Prussia. They were living in a romantic fantasy world. They came up with the intellectual origin of Yugoslavia. They were the first advocats for a Yugoslavia. Blue-eyed, naive, high trust, almost like the Westerners.
What they got was a nightmare. The Serbians are an Eastern people. Like all Asiatics they are naturally inclined towards Despotic rule. They looked at the bright-eyed Croats offering them their country and just annexed and oppressed them. The idea of Yugoslavia might have been theoretically many things, but for the Serbs it just meant every Croat should turn into a Serb. It was purely one-directional. The Croats were betrayed. No wonder they sperged out at the Serbs later and genocided them for a bit. They basically voluntarily joined a tiny version of the Ottoman Empire after always avoiding that fate throughout the last half a thousand years.
Vojvodina is also a tale for another time, but the Serbs were basically accepted as refugees, who fled from the Turks and then decided to steal that territory from Austria/Hungary like the ungrateful thieves they are. And they did similar things in every single region in the balkan, where they are the majority, trying to steal as much from Croatia as possible.
