It really depends on where you live. The fall of the western roman empire was horrendous for britain and northern gaul (hence why gibbon emphasized the fall) because it was so subsistent on the Roman military for economic productivity. On the other hand, places like Italy and southern gaul wouldn’t have had it so bad, but they definitely would have witnessed the dissolution of the empire manifest in less trade with certain goods disappearing altogether, fewer travelers, increasing banditry, the militarization of society, the disappearance of investment in public works, and the diminishment in the quality of certain crafts.
